Magus Spell Combat / Spellstrike + ... Spell-Like Ability?

Rules Questions

Shadow Lodge

I am working on my friend's setting, specifically on a magic item that gives you several electricity-based spell like abilities, such as Shocking Grasp and Lightning Bolt. Then I had a thought: can a magus use spell combat/spellstrike with spells he is not casting as a magus, due to an acquired SLA (or from another class), granted that the spell used is on the Magus list? I know about Broad Study and Spell Blending, they ADD spells. What if they are already there?

The spell has to be cast using a magus's spell slots, not just be on their list, here is the relevant FAQ:

Magus, Spell Combat: What spells can I cast when using spell combat?

The relevant text of the ability is:

"As a full-round action, he can make all of his attacks with his melee weapon at a –2 penalty and can also cast any spell from the magus spell list with a casting time of 1 standard action (any attack roll made as part of this spell also takes this penalty)."

The spell you cast when using spell combat has to be a magus spell you know, and it must be a magus spell prepared with one of your magus spell slots.

(Other magus abilities may modify what spells can be used with spell combat. For example, the broad study magus arcana explicitly states the magus can use spell combat to cast spells from the selected non-magus spellcasting class.)

Ah, was not aware of that FAQ, thanks.

Liberty's Edge

That don't work, it should be a spell memorized by the magus in a magus spell slot.
It don't work with spell from magic items, SLA or spell from other staff unless you take the Broad Study arcana.

The spellstrike ability ahs the same text:

Spellstrike (Su): At 2nd level, whenever a magus casts a spell with a range of “touch” from the magus spell list, he can deliver the spell through any weapon he is wielding as part of a melee attack.

If the spell-like has multiple uses per day then a conductive weapon may be worth while, especially as it doesn't appear to use an action so can stack for extra obscenity.

Just wanted to point out that the Wand-Wielder Magus Arcana does, in fact, allow a Magus to use spells from wands and staves as a part of spell combat. So thematically, , if your friend has the appropriate magus arcana, you could use something like this staff to achieve the effect you're describing.

What I am describing is taking nerves from a creature that can generate electrical attacks and implanting them in the user's arm as a custom item called a Graft. We decided not to go with actual SLAs, and go for just a custom attack.

Liberty's Edge

I think I would allow the magus to develop a new arcana that allow him to use its ability, but it would require money and time, a lot of time to practice with the ability to the point to be able to use it with spell strike or spell combat.
And I would limit him only to spell combat, not spell strike. A modified form of wand wielder, where the custom attack count as the wand.
