Readied actions and 'the stack'

Rules Questions

Silver Crusade

I did a quick look through the search function and didn't find an answer to this question.

This came up in my game last night. A scrag comes charging at a PC. Another PC had previously decided that on his action his bloody skeleton redcap was going to ready to charge the scrag should they leave the bog they were in, to close to attack.

The scrag comes out of the water, the redcap charges. The redcap gets into position, and whallops the scrag, who then continues along his charge path.

The player who's cleric was operating the redcap then posited the redcap should get an AoO on the scrag as its 'leaving his threatened area.'

As I didn't want to spend too much time on it, I made a quick ruling that as the actions are considered to occur simultaneously then the redcap's readied charge occurs as the troll was already in motion and therefore he gets his readied attack, but not a subsequent AoO.

I do want to check up on this though.

So what say you?

It's a big annoying, but technically you can't ready a charge to begin with. You can only ready a standard action, and technically you can only make a partial charge (standard action) when you are "restricted to a standard action".

But yes, you can get both an AoO and a ready attack in similar situations... for instance it could have been "ready to 5' step and attack if anything runs by". Also readied attacks with reach weapons can get two attacks as an enemy closes.

Yeah I know about the charge issue. Its a redcap skeleton though and he was less than 50 feet away, so...partial charge ho.

I'll make sure to tell the player he was right, I just didn't want it to bog down into a 'lets all pore over our CRB' in the middle of fighting for our lives against scrags.

To confirm also, the readied action occurs at the moment of trigger, correct?

Since he triggered for when the scrags left the water, he charges the scrag and interacts with it right at the water's edge as opposed to allowing the scrag to complete his charge, correct? I've always run it that way and just want to make sure I'm getting that right too.

It doesn't matter where the bloody skeleton was. It can't charge as a readied action. But yes it gets both a readied action and an Aoo depending on situation.

As for the scrags charge it continues unless his original path is blocked. If the conditions for the charge cannot be met the charge ends.

You need a feat, to charge as a Readied Action.

That feat is called Rhino Charge.
