I've been running two different Dungeon campaigns using a modified version of the original Appendix "A" from the 1979 edition of the Dungeon Master's Guide.
They have been a lot of fun
So I began working on a random Wilderness encounter/environment generator using a similar approach and soon I might be ready to start a random Wilderness adventure, and I was wondering if there would be muchg interest in this
Character's would be first level. Any PRD Race and Class
Custom Races with up to a 12 point build are welcome
Ability Scores will be determined by a point buy, probably in the high range
Characters will begin with above average wealth, for gear, and be limited to buying new gear/magic items by the whim of the tables and the possibility of not finding a settlement where items are available to buy.

Now this sounds like fun.
Having joined the bandwagon of Pathfinder during the low part of its fame, I never actually played any other RPG system.
The idea of a random wilderness interests me to no end, so dear Terquem, you have your first player!
Sign me up!!
EDIT: I think I'll play a Catfolk Ranger. Played Rangers before, but never a Catfolk. The idea of a pair of eyes in the foliage above the enemy is a nice one.
Scath Lynx |
Hi Terquem,
Not sure how you'd feel about an awakened Lynx as a character. He'd be ECL 2 to start, so that might be an issue. He was made with the 'monsters as PC' rules from the bestiary for a game that vanished with the GM vanishing (annoyingly he made a new login a few months later and started the same game up again later after leaving 10 of us in the lurch, and then did the same to the people in the second game). Basically he wouldn't gain any levels until 3rd.

Very much in GM,
Thinking an odd wiled race like Sylph or Fay.
In fact I really like the idea of playing a Fay thinking about it.
Rouge or summoner I think, what do you think of the warlock class?
What setting GM,
would be cool set in northern Europe dark ages, with pathfinder races.
I take it ailment, all but evil?

Had a better idea for the Fey-elf
Fey (2 RP)
A fey is a creature with supernatural abilities and connections to nature or to some other force or place.
A fey race has the following features:
Fey have the low-light vision racial trait.
Fey breathe, eat, and sleep.
Medium (0 RP)
Medium races have no bonuses or penalties due to their size. A Medium creature has a space of 5 feet by 5 feet and a reach of 5 feet.
Specialized (1 RP)
Prerequisites: Pick either mental or physical ability scores.
Modifiers: Members of this race gain a +2 bonus to two ability scores of the chosen type, and a –2 penalty to one ability score of the other type.
Normal Speed (0 RP)
The race has a base speed of 30 feet.
Fey Damage Resistance Lesser (3 RP)
Prerequisites: Fey type.
Benefit: Members of this race gain DR 5/cold iron.
Xenophobic (0 RP)
Members of this race start with their racial language only. Races without a racial language cannot take this array. Furthermore, choose up to four languages (except for Druidic or other secret languages), one of which must be Common (or Undercommon, if the race is native to the Darklands). Members of this race with high Intelligence scores can choose from any of these additional languages.
Envoy (1 RP)
Prerequisites: None.
Benefit: Members of this race with an Intelligence score of 11 or higher gain the following spell-like abilities (the caster level is equal to the user's character level):
1/day—comprehend languages, detect magic, detect poison, read magic.
Flight (4 RP)
Prerequisites: None.
Benefit: Members of this race have a fly speed of 30 feet with clumsy maneuverability.
Special: This trait can be taken more than once. For each additional 2 RP spent, the race's fly speed increases by +10 feet, and the maneuverability improves by one step.
Weapon Familiarity (1 RP)
Prerequisites: None.
Benefit: Choose up to two weapons, or one weapon and a racial weapon group. When choosing a racial weapon group, you must choose a group that includes the same name as one of your subtypes. Members of this race are proficient with those weapons. For the purposes of weapon familiarity, all bows are considered one weapon.
Special: This trait can be taken up to two times. The second time it is taken, the race becomes proficient with another two weapons or one weapon and a racial weapon group.
Long Sword, Net, Bows
SinBlade06 |
Um, Combat Wombat? I think there's a little problem with your Fey Elf.
Special: This trait can be taken up to two times. The second time it is taken, the race becomes proficient with another two weapons or one weapon and a racial weapon group.
Long Sword, Net, Bows
You've only got three weapons. Bows count as one weapon. You're either missing a weapon, or you forgot to add "Fey" or "Elven" as a racial weapon group.
EDIT: Wait, I didn't read the part about the "Choose up to two weapons" part. My bad!
@Niteflier: There's nothing to say we can't both have the same race. Wait wait wait....what if....our Catfolk know each other!?
They could be related!!! (or not. You like the idea, send me a PM or something)
Generic Dungeon Master |
Im new to pathfinder, and role playing in general. and these forums. i was kinda afraid to post a new thread to see if en expirienced GM would take me into a campaign. but every post ive seen has hundreds of posts or is a play by post. idk if i can do play by post. is this play by post?
Thanks for all the interest!
Daethhunseen - technically "this" is an interest check, which is sort of an open discussion about the possibility of starting a play by post game
If the interest is high, a second thread (this is a thread, right, you get that) will be started with specific information for how characters should be created, what the game will be like, and how it will be managed.
Then a pair of other threads will be created, one for actually playing the game and for discussions between the players about the game as it is played.

I'm not so sure I will allow mixed alignments in this adventure
Normally I only allow good and evil characters to be in the same party when there is a strong motivating plot element that overcomes the natural tendency of these tow types of individuals to not want to work together.
Right now I am thinking of using a starting scenario similar to "Eye of the Serpent" and have all the Characters dropped into a wilderness setting that is unfamiliar to everyone with instructions for finding an item "in this strange world" that has been misplaced and then returning that item to It'Dupree
SinBlade06 |
@Niteflier: Sweet. Should we both get selected, we can PM about actual relationship.
@Terquem: Speaking of selection, when is that going to start? If you're waiting for character sheets or something, please let us know! You're the GM, forger of worlds and headmaster of lore. We are players, and we are nothing more than the pawns in your grand scheme. And just wondering, do you want a character backstory? Or does that not matter?
@Deathunseen: Welcome to the forums! If it would help you get the jist of how this whole Play-by-Post thing works, you may gladly take my seat of interest and I will back down. If you need any help with character creation or forum instructions, please let me know. I know my way around the site and can tell you how to create an alias, construct a character, etc.
By the way, what is your current Pathfinder experience? PFS? Homebrew? Just starting?

I have a few more things to clean up, and then I'll open a reg
Backgrounds are not required and might be better left light, I'll have a little bit of background for the setting to post soon, but basically this game will be loosely connected to the following other games
Its "A" Dungeon
Its "A" Dungeon, too
Strangler of the Shadow Moor
Beyond Fort Horizon
and
Reflections in the Eyes of the Beholders

Ooh, I kind of like the idea of a Starship Troopers-type "drop team"; you're left somewhere, have to do something, and then figure out extraction.
If there's going to be a party alignment, would you give a central alignment to begin with that people need to stay near?
Also, potentially interested in playing a wizard—or other spellbook-based caster—for the challenge of having to survive in a setting where it's hard to find new spells, resulting in hard choices at level-up etc.

The character creation guidelines, background, adventure hook, and an introduction to how the Random Table generator and basic time keeping rules will work will be posted this week (I am thinking around Wednesday) in a full recruitment thread.
I am thinking of three possible ability score generators
1) (I've only tried this once) there is a fixed array, something like 10, 13, 14, 16, 16, and 18 and each player must arrange the scores differently from all other players
2) a basic point buy, probably 20, 0r 22 points, with no score permitted to be below 10 after the application of racial modifiers
3) A rolling method, 4d6 three times, 5d6 two times, and 6d6 once arranged in order with the player assigning the dice to the ability score they choose, so something like
STR 4d6
Dex 5d6
Con 4d6
Wis 5d6
Int 6d6
Chr 4d6
Of course you would only keep the three highest scoring dice in each roll
What are your opinions on these methods?
mdt |
What I usually do is roll 3 sets of stats (4d6, drop lowest) and all the players use those, choosing one. Get's rid of the lucky/unlucky guy in the same group (You know, the guy who always rolls 2 18's and the guy who always rolls two 6's), but keeps the stats more organic.
Beyond that, I'm fine with any method.
Terquem |
I'm still considering this, sorry for the silence, I've been made recently busy with things that are bringing me down, but I'm not going away. I hope we can get this going soon, but I need more time to plan the character creation,
Right now it looks likke an equal number of interested players like methods 1 and 3 for ability scores
If we kept to the "random" theme of the game in general, I'd go with #3, but maybe lift the restriction on placing the roles in a pre selected order
Also, I think I want to scale down the Skills available for this adventure (particularly Knowledge, maybe rework it so that it is applicable to an "unknown" environment
And lastly, how do you players feel about possibly trying this as a 5th edition D&D experiment?
