It's not happening, is it?
Or at least, flicking though several rulebooks and Googling several desperate questions, I'm unable to find reference to the Investigator either A) using exotic weapons or B) able to access either the trait (Varisian Tattoo) or the feat (Exotic weapon proficiency) that would allow him to use the awesome Scarf. (Rise of the Runelords players guide, page 13, legal for Pathfinder Society play (I believe)).
I'm creating my first Pathfinder Society character. Sczarni. Perhaps running before I can walk. But I figure a Varisian character who is essentially an intelligent Rogue should be able to sow blades in to his scarf.
Failing being able to gain proficiency in any way, how useful/useless is the Scarf without it?

"After skills, determine how many feats your character receives, based on his class and level, and select them from those presented in Chapter 5." - Core Rulebook.
It's taken me a little while to work out how many feats my character receives when there's no mention of them in the class description. I've now found it in the introduction to the class section of the Core Rulebook.
Running before I can walk.

This made me laugh. you get feats every 2 levels, at level 1, at level 3, at level 5 and so on, plus any bonus feats you get from classes or races (cough human cough.) you can take the traits you want, as long as you meet the PFS limit and that they are legit to PFS rules.
So...way to go. Trying my best to be helpful and not to troll.

Remember with PFS you have to own a copy of the source material... I've shelled out a few bucks for a PDF before just so I could use a single feat from it in organized play.
I found the d20pfsrd website helpful in that they cite the source material the feat/trait/weapon can be found in... I always cross reference that with the list of permitted "additional resources" to be sure it's a legal source...
I know the trait "Varisian Tattoo" grants proficiency in the Bladed Scarf and is found in the Pathfinder Player Companion "Varisia: Birthplace of Legends".
According to the additional resources, this is a legal source.
Welcome to the Forums, and welcome to the Pathfinder RPG!

Thomas, no need to be embarrassed, I've been grubbing around in the rules for years and still make mistakes, and ask for clarification.
You have 3 ways you could go:
1. Use a feat to get exotic weapon proficiency
2. Use the trait (probably the best bet)
3. You could be a half-elf and take the alternate racial ability that lets you have exotic weapon proficiency as a free feat (really this is just a variant of "use a feat")
I have almost no system mastery of the new classes yet, expect maybe the hunter, but the Investigator seems like a class that can make good use of having an extra martial feat, so I would use the trait.

I've been interested in, but not actively playing, Pathfinder for well over a year. As a result I have an unreasonable amount of PDFs, but mostly skip over the rules and read the background.
I checked the Varisian Tattoo thing out properly, seems I'm mistake. It refers to magic something or another. Seems to be directed towards spell casters. Or at least it does in Rise of the Runelords & Inner Sea World Guide.
However, being a Half-Elf and taking the free trait is the way I'm going I think.
Sczarni isn't that important. Being a bit shifty and Varisian I like the idea of though.
I'll be honest - I'm trying to make late 70s Dr Who.

Welcome to the world of Pathfinder! Paizo has the unfortunate habit of giving distinct and different abilities the same (or similar) names.
The Varisian Tattoo you refer to in the ISWG is a FEAT. The Varisian Tattoo I refer to in Varisia: Birthplace of Legend is a TRAIT.
The trait called Varisian Tattoo gives you proficiency in bladed scarves and starknives.
The Half-Elven ability, Ancestral Arms, is a RACIAL TRAIT, which is different than a RACE TRAIT.
Let's not get started on the half dozen or so DERVISH OF DAWN/DAWNFLOWER DERVISH Archetypes that exist...

I quite like it as well... I love the centerfold map of Varisia a lot... It alone justifies the purchase price in my opinion. I also like the fact that it has a section at the back that contains Traits and info for various Adventure Campaigns based in Varisia - including what I think is an abridged/abbreviated Shattered Star Players Guide.
