Sorcerer abilities in the class deck

Rules Questions and Gameplay Discussion

So, 3 of the 4 sorcerers now have whole "discard a card to blow someone up" ability, but with a new post script. "This counts as playing a spell." In the preview for the new spell cards, it also states the recharge is when playing this spell.

Now, I'm curious if that means that if you discard a spell, it counts as playing it, so you can try to recharge it. If it counts as playing a spell, it seems like that's how it's going, and makes sense for the characters to recharge it. Any idea if that's how it goes?

That text isn't new, Seoni has always listed that.

It means if a card says you can't play spells against it, then you can't use that power either. If a card in your hand lets you draw every time you play a spell, then it would let you draw a card.

It doesn't mean you get to recharge the card you discard. That's just the cost of using the ability.

To put another way, it means the ability itself is considered a spell, more or less. It can't be used when something prevents playing a spell, it triggers abilities that happen when you play a spell, etc.

Correct.

Don't forget that because it counts as a spell, you can't play another spell on the same check/step of the encounter.

How good is her power, since it counts as a spell you can not play others spells, and a d6+1 seems weak in dealing with the monsters?

Well, it's with ROTR Seoni its d12 + (2 to 6) + d6 + (0 to 4). So maxed out its d12 + d6 + 10 and blessings add d12s. Not bad for discarding a card you might not have needed much anyway.

It's not just d6+x because you also get to add your arcane die. It's a really solid ability. And don't forget that you can always acquire chaff that you normally wouldn't, like a leather armor (fortitude 2 check, I believe), solely for the sake of discarding it for this ability.

We like to make jokes about Seoni acquiring a "Potion of Fireball" (picking up a potion solely to discard it for her ability). XD

For my group is was Sages. Seoni kept getting them and setting them on fire to deal with her problems.

Acolytes here. All the Acolytes will burn!

(On a side note, outside of there not being a rat/dire rat ally card, the most disappointing thing about the S&S card list for us was the return of the Acolyte. Let's just say we are not their biggest fans...
And actually, I'm not done harping on that. I really, really wanted a dire rat. In the opening description of the first adventure (in the AP), they talk about dire rats being a great potential companion for a Druid, since they're already on the ship. We had a Dire Rat companion that is still on the team. AND our Druid made friends with all of the other Dire Rats in the hold, kept them on the ship, cast awakening on them 3 adventures later, and recently put them in charge of one of the ships in our fleet. I am sad.)

Edit: To clarify, I am (mostly) joking. I understand there are a lot of things that you had to try to fit in. It's just that my GF and I are rat lovers, and this was possibly the best chance they would ever have to appear as an ally, and so it was sad that they didn't make the cut.

That narrative gets even better if you get the role card for Seoni that lets her banish an Ally to draw three cards... for me that's basically her sucking the life out of one of her supposed allies to fuel her powers. Very dark and awesome. LOL

Yeah, in my Seoni/Kyra group, we decided that we were actually the bad guys. Seoni was a bloodcrazed killer willing to sacrifice anyone and anything for power, while Kyra was a falchion-wielding lunatic and loyal devotee to Lamashtu, Mother of Monsters.

It made the game even more fun :D

thanks for all the replies, I have just recently ordered the basic 1st set. One other question please, I have watch a few video's online of folks playing(a bunch, but with 5 different groups) and everyone seems to play melee(valeros; merisiel and seelah) (these where mostly solo or two person games, only one had 3 in it) are melee that better than casters. I ask cause in PFS I prefer casters and from what I have seen the locations are short on spells.

Play what you like. Nothing is really "better" in my opinion. They'll do different things and be good and bad at different things, but all the characters are perfectly playable. So play what you like. I play with multiple groups and play very different characters (Ezren, Valeros, Sajan, Harsk). They've all done great.

I played Valeros in one campaign and Seoni in another and they were both a blast. Maybe some people start with the fighters because they think they're more straightforward but really there's support for a lot of different kinds of play.

Sometimes it seems like spells are hard to get but some of Seoni's best spells came from rewards or defeating the Mystic Inscription. The game is designed to slowly level up your character over 30+ scenarios so the spell improvement is incremental.

To your general question, no casters are not the least underpowered. In fact, several prominent posters insist that casters are far stronger than melee characters. Play casters when you get the game; you won't be disappointed.

And a quick correction, Merisiel (at least the base set version of her), isn't a melee character. She will primarily use ranged weapons.
