Now that the kitsune are legal in Pathfinder Society and my plans for World Domination got one step closer all of you newbie kitsune players might be sitting out there wondering, "Just how do I make this character more than a human in a fur suit? What sort of motivations do these fox folk have?" Those of you in home games might even be wishing that there was a way that you (yes, you!) could more effectively build a Nine-Tailed kitsune or add kitsune subraces to your campaign world.

Well, look no further! Everyman Gaming, LLC's got you covered with the all-new Kitsune Compendium. 29 gorgeous pages of information about Pathfinder's very own race of natural shapechangers. Here's a taste of some of the goodies you'll find waiting for you in the Kitsune Compendium:

  • Detailed descriptions of important aspects of kitsune life and culture including their ecology, psychology, architecture, languages, nations, and more!
  • 16 all-new alternate racial traits.
  • New Favored Class Options for 24 base/core/hybrid classes. (That's all classes up to the Advanced Class Guide that aren't covered in the Advanced Race Guide!)
  • A dozen new archetypes, both for kitsune and characters who associate with them.
  • A smattering of witch hexes, rogue talents, and bardic masterpieces.
  • New feats that epitomize kitsune combat psychology.
  • A new subsystem for shapechangers of all kinds called remedial shapechanging that allows shapechangers to use their polymorphic powers to heal minor injuries.
  • And much, much more!

So is this product usable for pathfinder societies? I would really like to use a kitsune sorcerer with the sensible (as in it makes sense for her to have this) kitsune bloodline.

The player mechanics are not available for Pathfinder Society. Everyman Gaming, LLC is a 3PP, which means anything I publish under Everyman Gaming isn't Paizo sanctioned (although I've done my best to make it painfully clear that allowing me to write some 1PP work for kitsune would be a dream come true to me).

All of the awesome roleplaying flavor you'll find in the book, however? You can use that wherever and however you want!

A shame, well in the hopes that I may be able to enjoy these in the future, I'd ask that you petition the Additional resource guide on paizo to add this compendium to their list. I'm not seeing anything that would constitute a 'game-breaker' in this book, and with the hype them adding the kitsune to the choices, it would simply be good practice for Societies to incorporate at least some aspects from a compendium dedicated to them.

...that and I would REALLY like to be able to throw foxfire around.

Just noticed a typo on page 19 when I was reading through the section on poly-tailed Kitsune, where it says:

Kitsune Compendium 3rd Printing wrote:
...A nine-tailed mystic grows additional tales as his powers blossom...

Whereas I'm sure they certainly gain more stories to add to their repertoire, I'm fairly sure this was supposed to read 'tails'.

I was actually reading over the section looking for something else regarding becoming nine-tailed by ascension; is that only (mechanically) possible if they use some of their feats to acquire the Magical Tail Feat, or had you considered something allowing Kitsune who gain X mythic ranks to gain tails as well (but not necessarily the benefits of Magical Tail)?

Before I wrote the Kitsune Compendium, I authored a Mythic product for a very well-known 3PP. That product includes a Mythic option for nine-tailed kitsune. Keep your eyes peeled for a Mythic product with my name slapped on the front in the (hopefully) near future that will make that sentence clearer in comparison. (When its published, it will become clearer why I couldn't include it in the Kitsune Compendium.)

Hmm... Could you possibly be more mysterious about it?? ;)
At any rate, I hope you make mention of it here somewhere; I'd hate to miss it in the barrage of new stuff coming out weekly :)
On a similar note, What kind of mechanics would be appropriate for the other methods (aside from archetypes) mentioned in that section (Blessing, Enlightenment, etc.)? Obviously as a GM I could just make up whatever criteria I want, but I know some players like to have a road-map of sorts (and it's handy for GM's as well).
Also, in the event you're taking requests, after seeing what you've done for Kitsune (a labor of love, I know), I'd REALLY like to see your take on Samsarans...

Maybe?

Will do, but the product is for a VERY big 3PP. Like, one of the big ones. If you're a 3PP customer, you probably at least know this one. I might go so far as to say that this publisher is one of the ones who is part of the weekly barrage.

How's THAT for mysterious? ;-P

I'm assuming that you mean, "What sort of game mechanics are associated with each of the "methods" of becoming a polytaled kitsune?" If that's not what you meant, please correct me.

Anyway, each of those "methods" was basically designed to relate to one of the three archetypes in the Nine-Tailed Kitsune section. Blessings was the oracle and shaman archetypes, bloodline was the kitsune archetype, and enlightenment was the monk archetype. Now, you asked for mechanics. As a rough sort of "this is what works for these," I would say:

Blessing: Anything representative of divine power. Spirits, mysteries, domains, blessings, inquisitions. Also, I'd put witch patrons into this category.

Enlightenment: Anything representative of lore or meditation. The ki pool is the big one.

Bloodline: Anything innate. Pretty much sorcerers and bloodragers.

Ascension: Just being mythic is a good reason to gain additional tails.

My next product is called the Leadership Handbook. It is the Leadership version of Psychological Combat; it is about taking the dispart subsystems from Ultimate Campaign and giving them ways to interweave together while making it possible to specialize a PC in out-of-combat systems without taking away from one's combat abilities.

For example, every character in the system has a Leadership Score, and that Leadership Score is used to determine the character's sphere of influence (see the fame and prestige rules), the number of followers and cohorts she possesses, and so on. It provides specific ways to use followers and cohorts, gives GM tips and advice, and more. Basically, its an Ultimate Campaign expansion tool.

After the Leadership Handbook, I haven't decided what I'm doing next. I want to do a product about Teamwork Feats, specifically a product that makes Teamwork Feats less of an all-or-nothing option. There are, however, a couple of races that I want to do compendiums on, and the samsarans are one of them.

Yep, that's pretty much what I meant. I guess I was looking to get a glimpse behind the curtain, so to speak, to see what all possibilities might exist beyond the archetypes presented (not that those archetypes are bad or anything- don't get me wrong- but one could probably literally do dozens of archetypes based around those themes :) and that would expand the page count of the compendium considerably. Hmm. Maybe 'Kitsune Unleashed'? )

A Leadership Handbook? A book that actually makes players WANT to use Teamwork Feats? Other racial compendiums? Seriously, dude, where do I sign up for a subscription???

Not sure if this is the best place to report missing text/typos but there is some on the new swashbuckler archetype "Ronin"

in the "favored weapon (Ex)" there is line:

"...she may also do so while wielding the weapon in two hands instead of 1-1/2 times her Strength modifier."

what should there read? the last part makes no sense.

there is also word "level" missing from "Precise Strike (Ex)".
it should read "but her swashbuckler LEVEL is reduced by half "
instead of "but her swashbuckler is reduced by half "

This is a fine place to post this question.

Basically, Slashing Grace doesn't allow you to gain your Dex to damage if you're wielding the slashing weapon. (The same might be true of the agile weapon ability; I don't recall right now.) If you have a feat or ability that allows you to use your Dexterity to damage with your favored weapon, you may do so, but if you wield the weapon in two hands, your Dexterity bonus on damage rolls doesn't increase to 1-1/2 times your Dexterity; its just your Dexterity.

You're correct about the second part.

I've been trying to optimize the PDF so this loads faster. I'll try to have these fixes reflected in the document when I launch the updated PDF. (Hopefully by the end of the year.)
