Cackle vs a Deafened Target

Rules Questions

Im aware that we have an FAQ in place for silence. However.

Edit 7/19/13:
If the witch is in a silence effect, she can't use the cackle hex.
If the target is in a silence effect, it is unaffected by the cackle.
This may require some clarifying text in the next printing of the Advanced Player's Guide.

Doesnt cover if the target is deafened.

Further more I have a PC who this effects and would need to know.

Thanks.

Cackle doesn't affect your target, it affects a hex. That's why it doesn't matter if your target is in an area of silence

EDIT: my bad, dyslexia made me think the Cackle was unaffected when the target was in Silence.

The inference being that the witch has to both be able to be heard and actually be heard. Deafness therefore grants immunity to cackle.

I'm not sure how you could argue otherwise, but I'm sure someone will :)

What about chant? does it have the same riders as cackle?

I would really like some clarification as its causing quite a bit of strife.

Based on the FAQ I would say the precedent is that the witch must be heard by the target. So anything that would prevent the target from hearing the witch means cackle has no effect.

If the witch is an area of silence the sound she makes cannot be heard nor move out of the silenced area.

If the target is in a silenced area no sound may enter, and the witch cannot be heard.

If the target is deaf, it is similar to being in a silenced area, and the target cannot hear the witch.

I'm not familiar with chant, so I cannot say.

So cackle is blocked by silence is in the FAQs, not the books? Just asking, because I couldn't find this. Also, can't find any way to find things in the FAQs. The sticky post shows how to get -into- them, but not how to -find- anything.

It helps if you know the book that whatever you are looking for is in, and wherever it is in that book (most of the time, but not always)

There's a trick using Google that someone showed me once, too. Something about including "Paizo.com/FAQ" and the term you're searching for on the same line. I've never been able to duplicate it, though.

For Googling, something like this should do it...

cackle inurl:paizo/faq

Oh! I think that's it!

Cackle does not affect the target, it affects the hex, so it is the hex which must be able to hear the Witch.

Source?

Not sure I can agree with you, it reads to me as affecting the creature.

So... Cackling/Chanting can be countered with ear plugs?

Do rules for ear plugs exist? For some reason I was thinking they merely gave a bonus on saves against sound based save DCs. Which would not help against cackle, as it has no save.

Thanks! I'm perfectly happy looking things up instead of asking, but it doesn't help that it isn't obvious how to do it.
