The light coffee served in the Katheer Lodge is a welcome refreshment against the famed heat of the Qadiran sun. Arriving here only days ago from Absalom, the Pathfinders await news of their imminent assignment.

Gameplay thread! Please take a look at the Discussion thread as well.

A Keleshite man in a simple white robe in the Qadiran fashion enters with a letter and several items, all of which he lays on a nearby table before bowing and leaving the room again.

See the link to the letter above.

The three items are a silver-chased scimitar, a gold ring bearing three sapphires, and a steel shield studded with garnets and bearing the image of Sarenrae painted in gold.

She sighs. They have no idea who you are. "My name's Meredith."

Polo kicks open the door from his room with a loud thud. The white haired yet young halfling takes a good long whiff of the mixture between the dewy morning's air and the freshly brewed coffee. The pleasant aroma would have slapped a smile on his face if it hadn't already been beaming one.

"About time the two of you introduced yourselves! Just how do you expect to earn a reputation keeping such important things from the ears of others for days at a time? I'll ring out mine any chance I get: Polo Bolgar of the Order of Flame!"

A shadow darker than the moon during a solar ecplise slinks quickly out of his room towards Petrus. The wolf heads straight for the hind quarters of his beastly brethren, where he enjoys his own good morning whiff.

"Ah! See? Now those two know how to give introductions. Eclipse has gotten much fonder of you since you found your new companion, Petrus."

Polo makes his way to the coffee, making sure to give Torsk a heavy pat on the shoulder as he walks past.

"Good to see you once more, Torsk, my friend. Let's hope we run into a new type of foe this time around. Eclipse has trouble telling apart an exploding bone from a normal one! Perhaps I should have Cyka train him on the matter." He lets out a self-amused roar of laughter.

A tell elf enters the room. His bearing gives him the look of an aristocrat, but none of the nobility would let themselves get so emaciated.

Without a word he sits down and pours himself a large coffee, taking a long drink as if he's not seen the favorite beverage in some time.

Still silent, he picks up the Venture-Captain's letter and scans it. Putting the paper down, his eyes crawl slowly over the proffered gifts.

Appriase: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (12) + 8 = 20

"The Trade Prince," begins the elf with a voice deep and rich like a repressed memory, "will most likely prefer the ring. Doubtful to be a man of arms and warfare, his mercantile mind will cleave to the value and portability of jewelry. I am the Deib of the Geist, my good fellows."

He reaches over and pets the two wolves. "Lovely animals," he admires, as if it's not an opinion but a mere statement of fact.

He glances forward and salutes Meredith with his coffee cup. "Lovely hair," he says in the same tone.

Honestly, if a few folks have wands and somebody can cast CLW (read: Cesare and Petrus) then you'll probably be fine. EDIT: Although, 12 AC and 6 hit points... maybe not.

Everyone, please make sure you've posted the requested info in the Discussion thread.

One vote for the shield, one for the ring. Anyone else?

The Bahjari estate is located on the outskirts of Katheer, where its half dozen buildings have ample space to sprawl across the family’s land. The largest building is the manor house, a two-story structure made of whitewashed stucco over stone. The home has several wings that fan out through well-maintained gardens to accommodate visiting
merchants and other businesspeople.

At the door, servants take your __________ gift and ask that your pets remain outside, where they will be well cared for. You are then ushered directly to Trade Prince Aaqir al'Hakam in a secluded study.

Dressed in a white linen robe tied with a silk sash, al’Hakam stands behind a desk in this small study. He spreads his arms wide in welcome, though his face speaks to his fatigue and grief. "You are a welcome sight, Pathfinders, and I trust you are here at the behest of the esteemed Esmayl ibn Qaradi. As you can tell, this is not a day to uncover fresh secrets. Rather, it is one of mourning for Zarmina Bahjari--a noble trade princess, my mentor, and the reason I ever became a trade prince. I am here to see to her estate, act as executor of her will, and carry on her commercial interests.

"It may seem strange to engage in business during so somber an occasion, but trade happens quickly in Qadira; my late aunt by marriage would actually be disappointed were I not to wrangle her vulture-like competitors into submission. Even so, it would be unseemly for a member of Zarmina’s own family to conduct business at her wake.

"Though I have inherited much from my mentor, I do not intend to sit idly and live off her successes. It is still my intention to strengthen trade routes with throughout the Inner Sea while making the Pathfinder Society my chief ally. I want you to stand as an example of what we have to gain by continuing to work with the western nations. For that reason, I requested the Society’s aid because we have only a brief window of opportunity to speak with our rivals and convince them instead to become our allies. There are five in particular that I would benefit from your attention, and I understand several of them maintain their own rivalries with one another. Win over as many as you can, and I shall speak with them afterward to negotiate any details. Is that agreeable?"

Something about these halls remind Meredith of worse days. She'd rather help the servants tend the garden, or make sure Eclipse is alright, rather than listen to this man blather on about business deals during his aunt's death.

He felt like a vulture to her, picking the remains of a relative for his own benefit. She fights down the urge to turn and leave just as he mentions an alliance with his greatest enemies. Peace is better than war, I suppose.

At the Trade Prince's mention of the mission, his keen mind becomes awake. Discussing the intricacy of trade and profit margins are a welcome diversion after his last excursion involving things...eating...other things. He can not wait to match wits with those of sublime mentalities.

Of course, he's never been the one to be soft with his tongue, but hopefully that won't be a factor.

Looks like the ring, then.

Some of you may already know something about Qadiran funereal practices.

DC 10 Kn Local/Religion:
A typical wake begins as a somber affair, but it’s common for the mood to lighten as the sun warms the room and the living share stories about the deceased and comfort the
surviving family members. It is the local custom to wear at least some white, but being clean and presentable is more important.

DC 15 Kn Local/Religion:
As dusk approaches, those in
attendance wish the deceased peace through speeches and gifts that might accompany the deceased to the grave. Not only does this honor the dead, but it’s also an opportunity to comfort the living and remind those present to make the world a better place.

DC 20 Kn Local/Religion:
A less common funerary practice involves exposing the corpse to the sun for a week or more in conjunction with simple magic to prevent the corpse from decomposing.
During this time, family and friends watch over the body to keep scavengers away.

"Excellent. Hearing no more questions, we should proceed. I have much to do, after all, as do you."

Aaqir leads you from the study to the main entry hall at the center of the manor, where the vast majority of the guests (and all of the refreshments) are gathered, mingling and chatting. The hall's ground floor is comprised of an elegant mosaic of blue and white tiles laid out in intricate geometric patterns. Central stairs lead to the upper level and additional doors that lead to the family’s apartments. The double doors to the north open into the family's private temple of Sarenrae. Aaqir introduces you to a few members of the Zarmina family, including Aaqir's own husband, Emir Thalzar Gaatan and their three daughters. He also points out Umut Tepemkau in the temple, a visiting cleric of Pharasma and friend from Zarmina’s younger days whom her will specified should oversee her interment; al’Hakam notes that she is busy with preparations and might be available to chat later.

Finally, he points out the five merchants of interest. See below momentarily.

Kingmaker Tactical | Strategic | The Marchlands | Campaign Tracking | Liberation Points: 4

How this will work: the Mingling will take place over multiple 'phases' or 'rounds' (I can't say how many). During each round, you will have an opportunity to converse with the targets and attempt to gain Influence points via Bluff (pretending to be sincere), Diplomacy (being sincere), or one additional skill that varies from merchant to merchant (see below). Each PC only gets one skill check per phase, so choose carefully. You can team up and use aid-another or split up to cover more ground, as you prefer. Good roleplay can get you a circumstance bonus; bad roleplay (or complete lack thereof) can get you circumstance penalties. See below for introductions and details, then pick a target and try to influence them!

Temel Passad:

Additional Skill: Appraise

Aaqir points out a tall man with carefully groomed hair and an oiled beard. He wears pristine white clothing heavy with gold embroidery and gems. In following the tenets of the Prophets of Kalistrade, he avoids physical contact with others and partakes in only a small number of the refreshments available. "Temel Passad is a prophet of Kalistrade, an adherent to a strict set of personal codes that supposedly aid in one's earning wealth. He is a clever man that the Society has dealt with before--typically under pleasant circumstances. His business ventures sometimes compete with those of the Five Kings Mountains, which has led to a rivalry with Metella Rauger."

Doritannia Raffella:

Additional Skill: Intimidate

Next, Aaqir points to an attractive Taldan woman in her 30s with long brown hair. She is dressed finely but moves with none of the grace and bearing that might suggest a noble upbringing. "Doritannia Raffella buys and sells alcohol and spirits. She comes from a common household yet elevated her status through her own acumen and hard work, though she recently fell on hard times. No doubt her experience would be a valuable asset to any business venture."

Metella Rauger:

Additional Skill: Profession

Next is Metella Rauger, a redheaded dwarf who wears a tabard emblazoned with the Five Kings Mountains heraldry. She’s unarmed for this event, though she often touches her belt with her right hand as a habit. She relaxes visibly around those she knows. "Metella Rauger represents several trading houses from the Five Kings Mountains, and she has worked with the Society and its allies before. She’s stubborn but fair. No doubt she will be on edge here thanks to Temel Passad’s having decided to attend and honor Zarmina’s memory."

Pellius Melkior:

Additional Skill: Kn Local

After Metella, Aaqir notes a clean-shaven man of average height with sandy-brown hair. "Pellius Melkior is from Andoran and has established himself as a reliable trader of durable goods in his country. Rumor has it that he has also looked into expanding his business into the River Kingdoms and Taldor."

Jakti al'Awar:

Additonal Skill: Kn Religion

Finally, Aaqir points to a large and somewhat physically imposing figure dressed in clean white robes adorned with sun motifs, accompanied by two bodyguards. He keeps his distance from the cleric Umut, whom he respectfully leaves to perform her duties without distractions. "Jakti al’Awar has spent much time abroad and only recently returned to Qadira. He maintains a small business in magic items, and some speculate that his travels and business are primarily for scholarly purposes. What is known is mostly speculation; he is something of an unknown here."

Introductions complete, Aaqir excuses himself to speak with other guests and ensure that the funerary arrangements are taken care of.

Place your marker next to your target NPC on the map (see above) and get going!

"Aaqir al'Hakam would like to bind all of us together, not drive us apart. Perhaps he would be able to convince Tamar to stay away from your house's ventures. I think that would be much more profitable than a mere coughing fit."

Yeah, there's no chance that Cesare would start with anyone but Doritannia.

"Good evening, Ma'am, he said, showing her respect without taking on the airs of the nobility. He restrains himself from trying to kiss her hand. I'm Cesare, of the Pathfinders and I am a friend to Trade Captain Aaqir al'Hakam. He appreciates your presence at the wake of his mentor. It shows respect, something a strong man like Aaqir values."

After some polite conversation during which he does his best to be charming, Cesare gets to the point.

"It occurs to me that someone of your reputation would be an asset to Aaqir's organization, and the opportunities to move yourself up would be unparalleled. I can arrange a meeting, if you'd like."

Metella's expression dips first to disappointment, then up to acceptance. "Very well, I respect your honorable disposition. Still, Temel is more trouble than he's worth. If you change your mind, let me know." I'll just take the one check for this Phase.

Doritannia gives a somewhat clumsy curtsy to Cesare. "I am pleased to meet you, Cesare, and happy to attend. It is the only respectable thing to do." At the charmer's proposal, she smiles nervously and looks in the direction of Temel before replying. She seems on the verge of agreement, but hesitates. "Perhaps... I am not yet certain that that would be a prudent endeavor. But I shall consider it!" Her smile takes on a slightly warmer quality.

Dieb gives Polo a gentle squeeze on his arm and says, softly, "I'll open with Temel, but if we wanted to join forces at Pellius later, I'd be amenable to that."

Dieb drifts over to Temel, taking in the scene. From somewhere he picks up a cup of some light refreshment and sips it minutely.

Arriving at Temel, he addresses him in his deep voice, but neither offers a hand nor expects one to be offered. "Greetings, Wise One. Our host, Trade Prince Aaqir al'Hakam, wishes to express gratitude for your presence at this august occasion. And I wish to convey my own admiration for meeting one of such rich mental fortitude as yourself.

Petrus approaches Jakti al'Awar, smiles, and says:

"Warmest greetings my friend. I am Petrus, inquisitor and humble emissary of Trade Prince Aaqir. He wishes me to express his profound gratefulness for your respectful attendance. Although we all mourn the passing of his aunt, the noble Trade Princess Zarmina Bahjari, and none more than Aaqir himself, the wheel of the world turns on still, and so we must continue to turn with it.

Although he is currently unavoidably preoccupied with the obligations of the day, he has asked that I extend to you an offer of commercial allegiance that might benefit you both. It is the fondest wish of trade prince Aaqir that after today, he might call you friend, and work together with you to strengthen and expand trade throughout the nations of the inner sea."

Polo watches each of his companions lead the way to each of the diplomatic targets. Can't remember the last time I wasn't the first to charge straight into a trial, let alone the last.

He finds his first target: the refreshment table; and walks over to pick up a hefty piece of meat. His notable canines dig into and rip a mammoth sized bite off of the bone as his eyes wander to each of the conversations going on around the room, until he comes to a rest on Doritannia. It's clear to him that he sees her through a different sort of eye than Cesare and thinks this would be his perfect target based off of her mannerisms, but at the same time doesn't want to interfere with the bard's attempt at charming her allegiance. His own approach would be much less subtle. He struggles to read her with his limited ability-

Sense Motive: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (9) + 1 = 10

-but can't quite put a finger on what exactly it is that she's hiding.

His ears prick up when he hears a mumble from Meredith about being a forest guide, but decides to save the conversation on that for a more appropriate time.

He gulps down a sizable and under-chewed portion of meat as he decides to turn this whole event into a game. Maybe I can convince more people to join Aaqir than the others... He tosses the remaining meat back onto the rest of the refreshments and marches over to Pellius.

Great RP, folks! Keep it coming.

Temel inclines his head slightly by way of greeting. "The Prophecies of Kalistrade show the path to untold wealth," he intones calmly, an amused smirk breaking into his expression. "And you are?"

Jakti pays careful attention to Petrus's words, returning only a simple reply. "You are a holy man? Tell me of your faith."

I hope you will not simply think me a witless killer, eager for blood though. Many do, but this is a mistake. I must rely as much on the strength of my mind as of my arm, for it is in only the most worthy of battles that I seek to please my Lord. A fight against an unworthy foe does not do just tribute to Gorum. Thus must I ever endeavor to be certain only to draw my blade against a true and worthy foe.

What of yourself? Do you serve any of the higher powers?"

"In pursuit of liberty, Pellius Melkoir," says the halfling as he looks up to the dandy gentleman. "It gladdens me to meet such an influential figure of Andoran society. The name's Polo Bolgar both of the Order of Flame and the Society. Ender of demonic cults, Dismemberer of metallic golems, and Tamer of exotic beasts." The red flame emblazoned chest piece he wears is protruding with so much pride that it's practically above his own head at this point.

"Word on the streets is you're looking to setup shop nearby. I must tell you that Aaqir al'Hakam would be powerful partner to have in this area, especially if you're looking to go just past this land's borders and into Taldor. Think how useful an ally's way station would be here for a passing trade route. I could spread word of how mutually beneficial a relationship with you could be amongst the local merchants, if you'd like. Might help get things rolling for you..."

Doritannia lets out an uneasy laugh. "For some, yes, this is so." After a bit of good-cop bad-cop teamwork, Cesare and Torsk manage to nudge Doritannia in the preferred direction. More needs to be done, of course, but it's a start.

Jakti nods to Petrus. "I am a faithful servant of the Dawnflower," he says, touching the holy symbol tucked in a fold of his cloth belt. "My understanding is that Gorum does not give much care to the justness of the cause, so long as the fight is worthy. Yet this is not precisely the practice of which you speak. Do you break with the established orthodoxy?" Jakti's attention strays momentarily to the windows and he wipes his brow. "It is quite hot in here, don't you find. The servants have neglected my request to open more windows."

Towering over the halfling, Pellius chuckles good-naturedly as Polo rattles off his made-up titles. "Well it looks like you already know who I am," he replies with a laugh. He pays attention as Polo makes a bid for friendship, but quickly loses interest as he sees that Polo is neither influential nor--he believes--ensconced in the favor of someone who is. "You are mistaken, good sir. My principle interests are in Andoran and the River Kingdoms. Besides, there is all this bad blood between my country and Taldor, and between Oppara and Katheer. No need to get in the middle of that! Hahaha!"

"I would not go so far as to call it a break, no, yet we must all forge our own path."

Says Petrus as he strolls to the nearest window, undoes the latch, and pushes it slightly open.

"It is true that many adherents of the Lord in Iron will see any good fight as sufficient communion, regardless of the side they stand on. I admit, I do take a somewhat different view."

He turns away from the window, back to al'Awar.

"The worthiness of the fight is my god's concern. The worthiness of the cause is mine own. I do what I can to ensure I am in position to pursue both goals. My engagement with the Pathfinders has gone far in ensuring that I am in a position to do just this as often as is possible."
