Advice

If my GM doesn't plan on leveling us to 20, is there a major downside to dipping my lvl6 fighter (non-archer archtype, but he's an archer) with monk and barbarian? I like the Barbarian's speed and other small perks, and the monk will really help my Will saves and stuff. Or is that a terrible idea?

You can't do both, unless you use the martial artist archetype of monk, due to alignment restrictions. Aside from the martial artist, monks must be lawful, and barbarians CAN'T be lawful.

Just how far does your GM plan on going with this game?

Heh, not sure how I missed that. Probably 14-15. What about dipping to Barbarian, then going Inquisitor for the last 7-8 levels? I like being a pretty good archer for dpr purposes, but as time goes on, it would be nice to be able to do other things. I'm a complete newb on this though, obviously.

Tread carefully if you plan on getting barbarian rage and then becoming a spell caster. Can't cast while raging.

What are your ability scores?

Also see what you might be missing. Fighters get some cool feats only to them. Going inquisitor or monk lowers your BAB, so are you having an easy time hitting or not? But if there's something you really want then it's fine to multi-class. Going a two levels of wild rager barbarian can get you an extra attack on a full attack. So just be aware of what you're missing. Higher level stuff is often better then the entry level stuff of other classes.

Is your fighter vanilla, or one of the archetypes? I know you said he wasn't the archer archetype, but I was just curious...why didn't you go archer?

Dipping a level or two of Barbarian will give you more melee versatility, that's true, but I always figured with an archer it's less wasteful of levels to just five-foot back from range and continue to pump arrows (or at least get point-blank mastery).

I can feel you with wanting to do more than just fight, though.

I would skip barbarian if you're going inquisitor. Inquisitor's got a few abilities you'll want to get ASAP, like bane.

Have you thought about taking a level in a spellcaster class and going arcane archer?

14 Str, 18 Dex (inc +2 racial), 12 Con, 14 Int, 12 Wis, 10 Cha.

GM fairly generous with roll rules. I didn't like the trick shots the archer archtype recieved so I stuck with vanilla. I also thought a lot about arcane srcher, but I didn't really like it. I like the flavor, just not the abilities. Didn't plan on using Rage much, mostly just the dip for the speed bump, but I'd probably want to get to 7 Fighter then for the Armor Training boost.

Right now at low levels (4-5), I've had no trouble hitting. I've also considered dipping Ninja for skills. I really just don't want to be pegged useless later on.

Thank you everyone for the responses. I appreciate the help this community offers. I've been lurking awhile, and learning a lot.

Ninja is quite nice, BUT your charisma is not high enough to take advantage of the ki pool or be able to utilize useful abilities, namely vanishing trick (which you'd want to pull off sneak attacks with your bow, since you can't flank with it). You might as well go rogue if you're planning on going ninja; at least then you'd get evasion and trapfinding.

I'm curious as to why you think you'll be pegged useless later on? What are you afraid of? This could help in figuring out what to class into.

Also, going barb just for fast move as an archer doesn't seem worth it. Also fast move means you can't be in heavy armor. One of the bonuses of being a fighter.

If all you want is a speed boost, what about the Fleet feat? It increases your base speed by 5'. You can even take it multiple times.

Fighters get plenty of feats.

Since you mention the Inquisitor it's worth mentioning that they get a Domain at first level, like a cleric. If you take the Travel domain, your base speed increases by 10'. Travel is a great domain, that includes really cool powers. I'm not sure how important your base speed is as an archer, but I'm sure it won't hurt. The base speed is more important for melee I would imagine.

So in short, you can get a speed bump with the inquisitor.

Fleet requires light armor and less iirc.

Aside from having to be an Aasimar with a particular feat, try:

Brawler to pick up some monk-like stuff without needing to be Lawful.
Urban Barbarian for Dex boosting rage.

If you are lawful already, consider taking Sohei up to level 6:

You get 3 semi-specific bonus combat feats (vs the 3 you give up)
You get weapon training +1, and can now flurry of blows with your bow in light armor (aka medium mithral something.
-0 BAB on full attacks, -2 on individual attacks.
+5 to all saves
The ability to fight without any equipment (ki strike magic stick!)
Evasion
1d6 unarmed damage, so you threaten adjacent while wielding a bow.
+3 to initiative and always act in the surprise round.
About 8 class skills and 12 extra skill points.

I think it's a good idea to pick one of the two, and if you must choose Monk 2 is worth a good 10ish feats (Iron Will, Lightning Reflexes, Great Fortitude, Improved Unarmed Strike, Stunning Fist, Evasion, Bonus Monk Feat, Bonus Monk Feat, Wis to AC). Barbarian...just doesn't offer that much in two levels.

The speed is probably a mistake. There was a portion at the beginning where we were solo and the speed would have helped with "kiting" for lack of a better term. But that situation probably won't come up again, honestly, and I'm probably solving something that isn't a problem.

The "Travel Domain" and "Brawler" ideas are great!

"Useless" was an incorrect term. I guess more than just DPR would be my goal. A little utility in spells or skills, and I really like the Inquisitor flavor. Thanks again, everyone.
