Mounted classes in CotCT?

Curse of the Crimson Throne

I'm gearing up to run Curse, as it seems to get relatively high marks on average from the threads that 'rate' the APs.

I know already a lot of it is urban/set in Korvosa itself; a player is wondering if a mounted class (probably cavalier from the sounds of it) would be a good choice. I know personally, that while yes, a cavalier has other things besides mount, when you have a mount spec and little chance to use it, it kinda sucks.

Any feedback on this?

Well, as written? There isn't a ton of good options. Minus book 4, every major end-of-book-battle happens in a place where it is a little tough to justify/accommodate a large mount.

There are certainly opportunities in the streets of Korvosa, book 4 has plenty of open space, and you could argue that a person on horseback could ride around Castle Korvosa pretty easily.

Basically you are going to have to alter or invent some encounters to help this character shine if they go with a heavy focus on mounted combat.

I just had the "interesting" image of a cavalier on horseback galloping across Korvosan rooftops.

I agree with Knick. Most of the adventure takes place inside builings.

Yes, the AP as written is not very mount-friendly, a lot of close-quarter encounters. If you can live with that, okay, but I would not recommend it, unless you go halfling on dog style ...

Actually, I've come to learn a halfling on dog is what he's looking at. So where I can see issues inside a building; the medium size shouldn't be too much of a hang-up on street battles.

As far as the Shingles, yeah..that should be... interesting.

A halfling on a dog should fit easily into all inside and outside locations. The Shingle chase is hard on a lot of classes, so he won't be the only one struggling. On the other hand, if he'd be a halfling on a medium-sized riding cat, well then he'd be flying over those roofs ...

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Is this player evil_diva, or is that just a coincidence I found two people asking about cavaliers in CotCT that started medium and switched to dog-riding halfings in the span of a few days?

The only issues I foresee are certain times in the game where a mount will have a difficult time following. Like in the Shingle Chase, the Hospice, Arkona Compound (I don't see Glorio letting a mount into his house), and some places in Scarwall that have ladders.

You could help the character get their mount around by including something like Boots of Levitation (which most mounts can use), or Hosteling armor which absorbs the mount into the armor for transportation. Although the Cavalier would need at least heavy armor or a tower shield to store his/her mount.

By the way, if the player does play as a Cavalier, and makes it up to Scarwall, you *need to have an improptu Jousting challenge between the Cavalier and Sergeant Lashton on the Causeway.

You could do it by having them roll Initiative each round, but that only matters for who attacks first. Otherwise, movement takes place at the same time, and a tie in the initiative roll means both characters attack at the same time.

I would also rebuild Lasthon to be a bit more effective on a charge myself, but opt for a much more tanky Lashton so no one gets one-shotted on a Spirited Charge.

The ACG released just before I began HoA so When I ran CotCT I rebuilt Laston as a cavalier (order of the dragon of course).

As for the mount question in general, I really can't add much.

On a "cavalier" note, I also modified the Order of the Lion Cavalier order to a non-mounted order and converted all my Gray Maidens.
