Monk Vows

Pathfinder Society

Hey all. I'm starting up a new Society group, and one of my players is looking to play a monk with the Vows of Truth and Poverty. How would that work within the rules of the Society? I'm sure the Vow of Truth is easy enough to work with, but the Vow of Poverty makes me wonder how that would work within the rules. Help?

Vows are awesome. If my Monk was still around (he was an Aasimer who didn't get credit in time), he would have those exact Vows. Well, technically he DOES, but...
nevermind.

I have vows of Truth and Cleanliness on my Monk. The Vow of Truth has been slightly problematic once or twice, but I just try to avoid intrigue missions with that character. I try to role play both of them. He's constantly casting Prestidigitation on himself (via a Cloak of the Hedge Wizard), and he tends to be blunt when talking to people.

Mechanically, the extra Ki has only mattered once or twice, even as a Qing Gong and spending Ki most rounds on attack or defense, though it does make me feel more comfortable knowing I've got a couple of Ki in reserve (now 4 extra Ki, as he hit 10th level).

Vow of Poverty is tempting because of the extra Ki each level, but it can extremely hinder a character in PFS, especially given Mike's ruling. It would be a fun role playing and mechanical challenge, but you will likely start to feel behind the curve as everyone else boosts their rolls with magic items. And you may never find a use for all that extra Ki.

If you want to be really cheesy and not do any real RP the vows of truth and silence stack (add on cleanliness for ease of maintenance) if you're silent you can't tell a lie. Thus, maintaining silence gives you both bonuses. (Mind you I like truth and dislike silence personally, but there it is)

I don't think that's cheesy or non-RP at all. It actually says in Vow of Truth that many such monks take the Vow of Silence as well.

The reason I say it is cheesy and non-rp is the inability to interact verbally in character while playing.

And there are plenty of ways to make, or allow, such a monk to break either or both vows...

Just because you can't talk, doesn't mean that you cannot communicate, after all.
