Well, I stand corrected: The Taken King has been revealed.

Sovereign Court

Sorry, the lack of mouse is killing me.

Liberty's Edge

It's a poor craftsman who blames his tools. ;)

Anyone here hanging out on the 360 just picked up the game haven't had a chance to try it yet though.

So, if there's anyone out there still playing or if you have waited to play, the Taken King was released about three weeks ago.

There's still too much hoopla that Bungie pushes with this game, but they have done some solid work in making it better. Gone is the "light-system" in lieu of the more traditional leveling with the "light" enhancements changing it up more.

But they have also done a decent job of adding some new story-lines and narration to at least give it some coherence. Also, if you are a pvp fan, I would say the addition of a couple of new game styles and a half-dozen more maps is keeping it interesting.

I think the biggest issue is that in resetting the weapon/ability mechanics, they have essentially demolished all of the previous specialty items and equipment that people worked through for a year to get. It kind of sucks that some of the cool items haven't made the transition and therefore are really diminished in the new format. Bungie claims that they may still be useful, but honestly it doesn't look that way as of now.

My experience is that the old items (light 160/170) are useful while leveling from 34 to around 37/38 - somewhere in there, you are switching out to better gear that you find and get rewarded. The old weapons are still good in the regular Crucible - the armor is less so because the Intelligence/Discipline/Strength stats got reduced to barely contribute. I do wish they had made different rebalanced versions of some of the perks on the old weapons instead of rebalancing the perks on the old weapons. Field Scout is still pretty good, but is nowhere near where it was - which is probably good but really hurts a lot of the weapons that needed it to be useful like the Efrideet's Spear sniper - going from a 6-round magazine to a 3-round is hard.

I was able to use the old items on patrol, though I only pulled them out for special cases (used Invective for kills with Shotguns since it regenerates ammo, and used Patience and Time for kills with a sniper rifle since it had Field Scout for more ammo - but both were only to polish off a specific quest and were a one-off).

Agreed on this. I am still finding IceBreaker useful on some missions and patrol. I'm also still rocking the MIDA in Crucible quite well.

I'm an Xbox guy, so the addition of Monte Carlo and Hawkmoon was a treat. I'm finding Monte Carlo does well, Hawkmoon is more a specialized to me. I don't find it nearly as imposing as it's reputation made it though.

Good point. It adds a little more "C3PO" sounding feel - he's not as monotone but also a little annoying in a chirpy sort of way.

Liberty's Edge

After I move I need to get back into Destiny. :(

One more item to add to the list, just announced: Cosmetic Micro Transactions coming next week.

As you can imagine, that has generated some gripes on the Bungie boards. Depending on your take about how Destiny has been handled, this comes off as: the start of a bigger money grab that will lead to "pay to win" elements; a ploy to capitalize on Bungie fans instead of rewarding their loyalty in the wake of paying for a new expanson; and/or the possibility of better game play elements added for free or via cheaper DLCs. Your mileage may vary I suppose.

As long as it is kept cosmetic (dance moves, shaders, etc.), I don't see it being a big thing one way or another. If it helps add more content, great. Something to see what pans out.

I wasn't impressed with the reworking of several of the old lines - going through some of the old missions, it felt like he was gleeful in inappropriate situations ("Guardian down" and "We've awoken the Hive" seemed fairly sadistic). I wonder if the issue was the clipping for the "ghost" voice removing some register and that just makes the voice sound "off" emotionally.

The voice acting for the newly writing items are much better - not sure if I just got used to the voice in the week before the expansion or if the lines were better - I haven't gone back to see if I still react the same way to the lines that originally bothered me.

I can't also help but feel that maybe Peter Dinklage just wasn't that interested or available to make more lines of dialog or redoing old ones either. Or maybe Bungie just found it more cost-effective to have some else with more game-voice background?

Liberty's Edge

Or maybe the whining of people on their boards made Dinklage tell Bungee he's not interested in voicing more lines just to have the hyperannuated jerks that populate the Destiny boards b@%+# and moan and generally be horrible about it.

Sovereign Court

I listened to comparison, I'm ok with Nolan North's.

Liberty's Edge

I'm sorry, that statement makes no sense at all.

Sovereign Court

Sorry. I watched a video where they made a comparison between lines. I liked Nolan North's take better.

Liberty's Edge

Nope.

Still not making any sense.

Sovereign Court

If you're trying to say that you liked Dinklage's way of portraying the Dinklebot, and somehow also trying to make my statement ring as false, you, sadly, failed a lot.

The latter is getting cheaper by the day. You can get HDTVs at C.H. Martin prices now.... at least at C.H. Martin's.

I picked up my last 1080p monitor on Craig's List for 40 bucks... It pays to shop around and be patient.

Unfortunately, I live in Serbia. And I'd have to pay two entire monthly paychecks for a TV I consider good enough, and at least a single monthly paycheck for either console.

I just got a PS4, in preparation for Fallout 4, and decided to get the Destiny Bundle (mostly because I liked the console design). It's an okay game, although not one I would have bought otherwise. It did amuse me that the controls were nearly identical to Borderlands, making it familiar in a way.

I have to agree on the uselessness of scout rifles though. The only reason I even carry one is because I found one that lets me do ranged ammo pickups. Give me a good pulse or auto rifle any day of the week.

Unsurprising.

Much like your decision not to get a console because the cost of the console and a decent tv, for me the maths pointed to getting a new console as the most affordable choice.

There were only two holdout reasons to go pc (for me), mods and graphics settings. Mods are coming to console, so only one reason. Not a reason that merited spending $400 more.

There are some better Scout Rifles out there than when the game was in initial release. It all depends on play-style, I suppose. There are some with enough range and stability that they are like baby sniper rifles, if you prefer long-range. Try finding one with full-auto, and its more like a sub-auto rifle with decent range.

If you just started, the MIDA Multi-Tool is a nice one but extinct unless you buy it from Xur (as an engram). Boolean Gemini has been pretty good for me. Some folks swear the Hung Jury is a great one due to high stability/range/impact it has.

But I'm good with Auto Rifles as well. Suros style rifles are definitely rocking in their various styles.

Liberty's Edge

Hand Cannons and Scout Rifles are great. Pulse Rifles are pointless and Auto Rifles are for the Crucible and folks who can't aim. ;)

If I found one that had full auto it would be okay. Luckily though, they already have rifles that come with full auto all the time. :P

I'm still sticking to my handcannons.

Picked up a PS4 and am enjoying Destiny so far. I've had an itch for an MMO-feeling game for a long while and this is scratching that itch nicely.

Went with a PS4, cause I want some of the releases that are slated for next year and I can work through some back catalog until then. Specifically Ico and Shadow of the Colossus.

Welcome and hope you are having fun. You probably picked a good time to do so in year two; with a whole slew of storylines that have been streamlined. While I don't much like it, PS4 is a good choice as it has more exclusives that XB-One.

Much of the flak and messes that came from changing treasure and equipment mechanics around seem to have been resolved. While still not perfect, weapon balance is getting better. Classes have been expanded; although that still something of a hot button topic. The story of guardians and the Traveler - while still a bit on the shallow side - has gotten better fleshed out with the arrival of Oryx.

Destiny just launched a refer a friend program. It sounds like it needs to be a veteran that has played linking to a new account that hasn't played.
