A question on Profession skill

Are there certain professions to choose from, or can I make my own. For instance can I do Profession (gravedigger) or Profession (mortician)?

Yes, just don't get TOO evil with it (i think profession assassin is banned)

Grand Lodge

Thanks, that clears things up.

Silver Crusade 2/5

Profession: Torturer is also banned.

But Profession (Gardener) is OK. So please step up to Loxx's Assassin Vine Emporium.

Actually, I believe only profession (torturer) is explicitly banned. And that happened because people were being stupid on the message board, which forced Mike Brock to ban it.

profession (assassin) is still legal. After all, your character could be a retired assassin, who still knows things about how they work. But if you use it for day job checks, will get you marked as shifting toward evil.

(And if people start arguing that they can use it for day jobs and not turn evil, this thread will probably wind up like the P(Torturer) thread and result in P(Assassin) getting banned as well.)

Silver Crusade 4/5

There are some profession skills that occasionally come up in scenarios. I know I've seen sailor and librarian come up at least once each, and maybe soldier, as well. Sailor is probably the most common.

That thread already happened (either last year or the year before) and the consensus was that Profession (Assassin) as a Day Job was fine.

EDIT: found it.

Profession Sailor actually comes in useful in a few scenarios as more than a day job. It saved us a lot of trouble in [REDACTED].

Yes, but it won't substitute for profession ([REDACTED] Sailor), since my PC with ranks in Profession (Sailor) couldn't sub it in. :(

Oh, you can definitely make your own up! My Pharasman wizard has Craft: Funerary Artist. And my gnome sorcerer took the Breadth of Experience feat

Spoiler:
Although still young for your kind, you have a lifetime of knowledge and training.

Prerequisites: Dwarf, elf, or gnome; 100+ years old.

Benefit: You get a +2 bonus on all Knowledge and Profession skill checks, and can make checks with those skills untrained.

to open up EVERY PROFESSION in the world!

It was both amusing and in character for her to suddenly pop up with: "I make a Profession: Bartender check to learn about the bad guy from his liquor selection!" "Can I use Profession: Golem-Maintenance to figure out if this thing can be made operational?" "I talk to the Szarni, using my Diplomacy and Profession:Smuggler to get him to open up to me about the secret route into the city!" "Can I use Profession: Fashion-Designer along with my Sleeves of Many Garments to come up with a fantastic outfit for this opera?" "Can I use Profession:Architect to figure out the most likely place for a secret room?"

It was great fun!
