Just watched this tonight.
Quite enjoyable and a fresh take on the whole way mythology is "built" and reinforced.
It's also very much a fantasy adventuring party-like movie, with a fighter, a barbarian, a fighter/ranger archer, a bard, a fighter/rogue and an "oracle."
I liked it, don't expect an Academy Award-type movie, but it's a good fantasy/fighting romp that should keep you entertained for a couple of hours.

Yeah I really enjoyed it, partially cause I went in expecting an awful film, and it ended up actually being a really fun action film.
EDIT: That said, still really confused by the woman who took our tickets at the door telling us that we made the right choice, everyone who'd been to see Guardians of the Galaxy had been saying how crap it was and that Hercules was better. Given reactions to the two films, I'm not entirely sure how that would be possible.

I have been there...when Dungeon Siege came out, I missed my bus home from the university. It was pretty late and I had the choice between waiting outdoors for two hours, freezing cold and rain included, or watch a movie. No other movie that day seemed remotely interesting, so I watched Dungeon Siege (I figured that the impressing array of actors could bring at least some enjoyment)...I still think to this day that the cold and the rain (and the sickness that would invariably have followed) would have been far less painful than that movie...

Because I go to the cinema with a friend on a regular basis and 9 times out of 10 we see what I want because I'm the one who keeps up with what's on. He had heard about Hercules and was really excited for it, so I wasn't going to say no to him.

Or this. (I have seen some surprisingly good movies this way that I would have missed on my own.)

I've done the whole "go to the movies to kill time" thing too, but never in Canberra. If I can't get home from somewhere here, there's something very wrong. Even if I've missed my bus that goes to the shops across the road from my place, the buses between the major interchanges run every 15 minutes to half hour throughout the day, and I'm only a 15 minute walk from the Woden interchange. And if the buses have stopped (say I'm out in the city late at night), it's barely more than the cost of a movie ticket to get a taxi home. One of the advantages of living in a small city I guess.
That said, the amount of times I've gone to the movies in Sydney when I was dating a girl there... I'd be in the city, get a message from her explaining that public transport was screwed and she was a couple of hours away... to the movies! That's how I saw V for Vendetta (Yay!) and The Davinci Code (Ugh!)
But yeah, this guy occasionally picks a really good movie, and like I said, it's normally my choice anyway, so I go along when he picks one. I think seeing The Family was his idea too, and I loved that.

Both are very good movies.
I thought Guardians of the Galaxy was the more enjoyable of the two. Easily the best movie of the summer.

I was sort looking forward to it, but then I found out it was directed by Brett Ratner, and then I also found out
that most of the cool monster fighting in the trailer was apparently just a few minutes of prologue that are implied to have never have happened.
If I go see a Hercules movie, it's for the monster punching. Not for the generic barbarian dude stabbing people. I have no interest in seeing a version of Hercules on the big screen that just throws out all the elements of the legend. That's like watching a Harry Potter adaptation that throws out any reference to Hogwarts or Voldemort.

Really? for me the title winner for best movie of summer 2014 is easily Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. When a movie manages to make a scene with an ape wielding two rifles, riding a horse, screaming and shooting everywhere - and the scene makes sense and fits perfectly into the story, that's a win. It was a tense, tightly scripted story populated by a cast of characters who all make sense and have actual motivations for what they are doing. The action was great, too.
Guardians was entertaining, but unlike Planet of the Apes, it just never rises above the popcorn movie category.
