Point buy and monsters challenge.

Advice

I cannot find with some search, so maybe ask will bring me some better luck :)

I was wondering about monsters: with a monster of the same CR of a party, what point buy should be the party mean to have while fight the moster as for bestiary?

I mean, given a CR X, what point buy should be the party to be in line with the intended CR? I'm toward 15 or 20 point buy, but I really want to figure it. I hope I'm clear enough in my question.

I don't understand the question.

Do you mean a party of level 5 PC's vs one CR 5 monster?

I don't like 15 Point buy or 25 point buy. 15 pb makes some classes better than others. while 20 point buy is just in the spot. but with encounters the same CR, you should probably try 15. i find that 20 pb is better with APL+2.

Some classes are better than others anyway. Point buy is less of a culprit than the design of the class. I personally like 20 since it gives MAD classes a chance to be made with less limitations. A SAD class like a caster is not affected as much.

Sorry for the late, I've been busy. What I'm trying to ask is:

Let's say a cr 5 encounter. Now, a cr 5 is supposed to drain about 20-25% of group's resources for the day. What I'm trying to guess is at what pb score the group is supposed to be built to have a cr 5 drain 20% of the group resources at level 5. Or in other words, the cr assumes that the group is a 4 (or 5?) PC created with a point buy of X. What is the value of X?

The CR system assumes a 15 point buy.

Correct. That is why it is called "Standard Fantasy" on the table. It is the standard.

Thanks. And what about the standard group? It's 4 or 5 PC?

Normally 4 or 5. When you get to 6 PC you are supposed to adjust the encounters.

Quote:
Step 1—Determine APL: Determine the average level of your player characters—this is their Average Party Level (APL for short). You should round this value to the nearest whole number (this is one of the few exceptions to the round down rule). Note that these encounter creation guidelines assume a group of four or five PCs.
