Fundraiser for new playmats for Skulls&Shackles and Class Decks

Homebrew and House Rules

Hey folks,

I just bought the Pathfinder Battles Miniatures (for you) to enhance my playmats with these amazing miniatures.
These miniatures are collectors items and therefore are very expensive, e.g. Amiri, Seoni and Harsk for 150 USD plus 29 USD shipping to Germany plus on all 20% custom fees... *@#*!!!$%&*

PLAYMAT FUNDRAISER FLYER.

So getting those miniature was quite expensive for me. Further, there are more characters being released with the upcoming Skulls&Shackles (11 characters) and Class Decks (28 characters)... So in total we have then 51 characters available and two adventure paths which results in 102 (!) playmats (just combine any character with any adventure path).

So quite a lot !

The final design V5 of my playmats is now released. I will continue with this design to create the Skulls and Shackles playmats.

For lots of costs involved, I would like to start some kind of KICKSTARTER here. If you like these Version 5 playmats (see links below), please donate any amount of dollars thru paypal
to
playmat@gmx.net
You will be listed among the supporters for this huge fan-project. As funding continues I will release Kyra, Sajan, Seelah and Lini in the final design Version 5 as some sort of reward.

What do you think about this donation fundraiser ?
Of course, I discussed it with Paizo and it was accepted.

Please support this fan-project - from fans for fans :-)

Cheers
Mike

PS: For GeekGold, i cannot pay e.g. the toner cartridges for my laser printer, buy more Pathfinder Miniatures for Skulls&Shackles, etc.

I think you're dangerously close to profiting off of these if you do a Kickstarter, so I would rethink this. You wouldn't want to find out you've violated Paizo's community use policy now, after you've put this much work into these mats.

I discussed it with paizo... A suggested donation is ok...

I do not want to get rich, but investing 310 usd in miniatures and 130 hours of design.... Then you should get the miniatures for free as you share these with the community on the playmats. This is why I accept donations in case you are interested in more playmats for skulls and shackles and class decks. There will be not only 11 playmats but 102 !

I would support any community project which creates fan-based-products i like by a small donation of 3 to 5 USD... I would do it... Geekgold sucks... There is nothing you can do with it.

http://boardgamegeek.com/thread/1196864/geekgold-sale <-- This is one type of option.

http://boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/176363/games-geekgold-g4gg-august-2014 <-- Here's a thing, too.

http://boardgamegeek.com/geekaccount/purchase/adblock <-- And there's always this.

I now created 5 revisions of the playmats. I need to print every of these to check the results ... is the brackground too dark ? everything readable ?

So this donation fundraiser is about cost coverage, not about getting rich: Recovery of miniatures, game costs and printer costs.

Now the 7 Class Decks and the skulls&shackles adventure is being released. Cool to have a free copy if you are creating 102 playmats...

That is just the basic idea of some sort of community reward. E.g. Hawkmoon with his cool errata pasteups... He is also a guy who should have a free copy of the game and all paizo material free of charge as much community support he is doing the way along the adventure....

So these are just my straight thoughts....

PS: Now I know why the AMIRI miniature was 50 USD on ebay.com:
She is the best pre-painted miniature of the series. Beautiful.

I spent as a 5times PACG subscriber around

- 600 USD for game components (or more $$$)
- 310 USD for miniatures
- multiple printouts on color laser and canvas printer to opt quality

So profit, I would define (assuming 130 hours of designing playmats are not considered) when donations would reach a total of 1200 USD - so far there are none. :-)))

I'm pretty sure that none of that really counts as things you can pay for, grab donations, and claim it's not profit.

Personally, I'd really like to see someone from Paizo confirm that it's even ok for you to be soliciting donations to fund this thing, rather than just going by your say-so.

Or, y'know, take the geekgold and sell it in the BGG marketplace. It's what everyone else does. :P

So far on BGG the playmats collected 22 GG, which is around 0.50 USD when i would sell the GG. The only party so far profitting of my premium playmats is BGG !!!

When gamers come to their site to download my stufff, their advertising just generates $$$

BGG
It should be as on youtube, when you get a certain number of views then you should be profit also from their advertising... And receive some $$$.... This would finally get the BGG designers the reward they earn ...

If you discussed it with Paizo, then feel free to ignore my first post. I just thought the warning might be worth noting. I personally don't feel the need for the special playmats, but I'm sure there are many who appreciate them. Keep up the good work!

While those mats do look really nice, and I can appreciate the amount of work that went into them, I have to agree with others that this does not sound like something Paizo would approve of. Trying to recover the cost you spent on miniatures and other game materials is definitely going deep into the profiting territory. You weren't forced to buy any miniatures to make playmats, and I'm certain you didn't buy those miniatures for the sole purpose of putting their image on a playmat.

Ok, just to be clear here, under the Community Use Policy, people can accept donations to cover the costs of the products they create so long as they are giving away the things they create freely.

The keys here are that you cannot *require* a donation (because that's really just selling something) and that you cannot exceed the *direct costs of the products you create*. You don't get to attach the cost of any Pathfinder thing you ever bought to the project, and you don't even get to assign a cost to your time and effort.

I'll use Wayfinder magazine as an example of somebody who's doing it correctly. Twice each year, they create a fan magazine full of Pathfinder-inspired articles and artwork submitted by the community. It's normally available as a free PDF. However, they usually print up a bunch of copies and bring them to PaizoCon, where they give them away for free. They ask for donations to cover costs, but the costs we're talking about are the direct costs of printing the things they are giving away. They don't get to cover their editorial time, or the products every author bought and referred to while writing their articles. All they get to do is cover printing costs—period.

If the content you are creating under our Community Use Policy is a free PDF, you do not have any recoupable costs, unless you are paying to have those PDFs hosted. (And if you're doing that, I'd suggest you look for free hosting.)

Also, please stop using all caps in your messageboard subjects.

And don't forget that the Community Use Policy has very specific language that you must place on everything you do, and I'm not seeing it on some of your images. Please go back and read the whole thing, and do *everything* it says you have to do.
