Another Versatile Performance Question: What Type of Check is it?

At 2nd level, a bard can choose one type of Perform skill. He can use his bonus in that skill in place of his bonus in associated skills. When substituting in this way, the bard uses his total Perform skill bonus, including class skill bonus, in place of its associated skill's bonus, whether or not he has ranks in that skill or if it is a class skill.

I couldn't find an answer to this specific question in the various threads I looked for, so I thought I'd ask.

Suppose a bard uses his Perform (Oratory) bonus to make a Diplomacy check. Suppose further he has an ability that lets him roll diplomacy checks twice. Does this ability function? In other words, is he actually making a 'diplomacy check'?

I read it as yes, you are making a diplomacy check. You are only using the total skill bonus you have in the perform skill to make the check with.

So, a reroll, or roll twice, ability on a diplomacy check would work, since it is a diplomacy check.

However, something that was a bonus to diplomacy would not necessarily work, as you are not using your diplomacy bonus, you're using the perform's bonus. This would keep you from doubling up on say skill focus for both skills (not that bards really would need to).

But it wouldn't work if he had an ability to roll a perform check twice?

Not if he was doing a diplomacy check (even if using VP with a perform skill's bonus), IMO.

I see VP as just taking whatever number you got for a performance and overwriting what you have in another skill w/out interacting with base bonuses there. You're still doing whatever check you normally are (diplomacy, sense motive, perform, etc.), but you might get to use another skill's bonus for it.

EDIT:Editted a couple times to try and clarify.

Alright; thank you! I agree with your position, actually; I'm in a discussion with some others where this point is not agreed upon.

Hope to get more input via this thread.
