Acid Splash duration extended

Rules Questions

Dark Archive

Hi, didn't know where to look to figure this out, so i figured i'd just pop in a quick question over here.

The Flask of Acid alchemical item can be used as a material (which uses it up) to extend the duration of the Acid Splash spell by one round.

What does this do exactly? ...And, is it more worth it to simply throw the vial of acid to begin with, since it could do 1d6 acid damage + splash?

The spell says it creates an orb of acid that does d3 damage and disappears after 1 round. Using the acid flask as a material component will make the orb last two rounds, doing an extra d3 damage.

Yes, this is generally pointless, although throwing the flask very far can have large range penalties, you have to worry about splashing allies, and it only does d6 anyway so getting d3 out of it isn't losing all that much.

You may also get bonuses for doing acid damage that could more than make up for the reduced damage, but 10 gold per shot is a lot to throw away at low level and ~3 damage quickly becomes meaningless.

It is indeed a damage downgrade to use the acid flask in this way, but it is a very big action economy upgrade. It would be well worth it, if fighting trolls for an example. (You'd stop regeneration for two rounds).

Sovereign Court

The feat False Focus is great for stuff like this too. You don't actually have to use an acid (or whatever) reagent, as long as the value is below 100 g (and you have a holy symbol worth 100g).

Lantern Lodge

Don't forget, you can alternatively use the acid flask as a Focus component (rather than as a Material component) to get +1 damage WITHOUT using up the acid flask. So if you use acid splash alot, it might be a good idea to keep an acid flask handy.
