PFS Aasimar Monk / Ninja, concept assistance requested

Advice

Like many folks, I am looking to start an Aasimar before GenCon. I am considering some sort of monk and/or ninja hybrid or single class. (Possibly with a dip into cleric of Irori to represent his religious devotion to self perfection.) At least largely because I haven’t built anything with either of those and in my mind it fits well with the Aasimar that I want to start.

First, Yes. I know the Monk is considered a low power class. This is for PFS so truly amazing power is usually not necessary. I am aware it will take more care on my part to make it work. That is part of what I’m going for with this PC. I have found that some of my PC’s are good enough that I can just ‘coast’ along not bothering to make good decisions – since he will survive and succeed anyway. So my planning and tactics are not doing so well. I want to force myself to give more thought and concern to what I purchase, what I do, what my team can/will do, what the opposition can/will do.

Not sure exactly where to head with it. Not interested in a just DPS build. I already have another character that trips and disarms like crazy, though I might consider other combat maneuvers. I have a sort-of tank PC, so not sure I want another of those. Plus people at my local in PFS, seem to not cooperate with what a tank provides them. Our local is filled to the brim with zen archers, so even though I want to do one of those eventually, not for this build right now.

I would also like to focus on the more fantastical abilities and mystical Ki powers rather than just the basic unarmed strike by itself. I like moving past the mooks and hitting/distracting the casters in charge. I find that amusing, even if difficult to survive.

Considering
Aasimar
Archon Blooded, +2 Con, +2 wis, continual flame, intimidate, sense motive
Garuda Blooded, +2 Dex, +2 Wis, see invisibility, acrobatics, fly
Monk and/or Ninja (possibly a dip into cleric)

Looking for concept ideas and maybe the rough build to get me started.

Tetori is always powerful, and great at locking down casters.

Sensei is a great support build, wisdom based, and can be a devastating sunning fist user with mantis style.

Weapon Adept is fun for staff builds.

Weapon Adept with Shuriken and a combination of Alchemical shuriken from the Alchemy Manual and obsidian or bronze weapons with the Splintering Weapon feat can make you a batmanesque ranged build.

Harrow Warden looks promising. Pugwampi instead of stunning fist and a cool flavor.

Sohei the best DPS, but less mystic abilities so you may not be interested in that.

Martial Artist is great, but no ki at all really messes with you concept.

Silver Crusade

Well, usually a monk dipping into cleric is for the feat Crusader's Flurry. If you worship Irori, that becomes pointless. However, if you reconsider your deity choice, this comes back around. The other, really great, thing that a cleric gets you is the ability to use wands from the cleric list.

At third level, you can bounce around the battlefield wielding and flurrying a one handed weapon with your wand of cure light wounds in the other hand. The standard is to dip Crusader cleric for the free Weapon Focus. This gives you 1 domain to choose. Choose wisely, grasshopper.

Ok, looks like I may be switching to something like Tengu. Even though they go together in my mind, the Aasimar just has nothing special to work with the monk.

So I will make a different build for my Aasimar to be.

To really focus on the fantastical aspects, I'm considering Ki-Mystic and Qinggong combined.

Ok, that sounds hilarious! This I may have to consider.

I don't think I have whatever book has Harrow Warden.

I could be convinced to switch diety. Irori was just the first that came to mind. I would think my first monk should be primarily an unarmed combatant. But after consideration, a lot of those legends did have the mystical monks using some odd and/or large weapons.

I'm guessing I would rather have the domain than a free weapon focus. But it will be an item under consideration.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Harrow Warden is in the Harrow Handbook.

If you do go with the Cleric Dip for crusader's flurry, here are some good deity options:

Sarenrae: Scimitar. Fantastic for a dex based build. Flurry of Blows with Dervish Dance. Go Hungry Ghost for all the crits you will be getting.

Shizuru: Katana. Same concept as the Scimitar without the ability for dervish dance.

Shelyn: Glaive. Reach Flurry is awesome, and you will always threaten adjacent as well.

Calistria: Whip. Only possible on an Aasimar or with a Martial Artist, but great for a maneuver build. I would dip Warpriest 4 instead of Cleric 1 for this one, the Sacred Damage on whip is too good to pass up.
