Ezren + Chellan = MegaHeal?

Rules Questions and Gameplay Discussion

Hi all,

First time poster that just finished adventure set 6.

I played Ezren in our group and picked up Chellan, Sword of Greed as a Loot Weapon.

The second part of the text says "Reveal this card to attempt an Intelligence 10 check. If you succeed, shuffle 1d6+1 random cards from your discard pile into your deck. If you fail, banish this card."

I had about 10 cards in my discard pile. I revealed the Sword, auto-succeeded on the check, but only rolled 3 on my 1d6+1.

Does anything stop me from just Revealing it again...then again....then again...(I am auto-succeeding on the check after all)

It seems very broken and cheesy....but is it legal?

Thanks in advance to the more experienced players than me.

Nope, nothing stops you from doing that. However, since you only have that card for the last scenario (since you pick it up in the 4th scenario), I don't think its too much of a problem. The real problem of the last scenario is all the burying you might be doing.

Also, how did you auto-succeed on the check? Even with all the skill feats, you will be rolling 1d12 +4. Did you have some items adding to your Intelligence check (Robe of Runes or one of the headbands)? At a minimum to get an auto 10 you would need 3 items. Two Headbands of Epic Intelligence and a Robe of Runes would give you 1d12 + 10. But at that point you are talking about needing 4 cards to pull that off. That won't leave a lot in your hand to actually deal with what's in the location deck.

Sounds like you might have been mistakenly rolling an Arcane check instead of an intelligence check...

Nope, I did in fact also have the Robe of Runes, and 2 Headbands of Intellect in my hand at the time...so my Intellegence was +4 from Stats and another +6 from Items for a total of +10...

Well, then enjoy that broken healing for your last adventure. :)

Sovereign Court

Yup, in that instance you have infinite healing. Of course, getting that perfect hand is pretty unlikely -- you deserve to break it :)

Also, keeping this engine going requires that you hang on to those four cards. As Hawkmoon pointed out that limits your flexibility to the remaining cards in your hand, and the engine would be stopped by taking damage enough to get to those cards.

The question for me would be, are there any other combinations that could then feed off of this engine to be very disruptive. If so, it might be good to make the design team aware of it, in order to help prevent such things in future design.

It's limited very specifically to Ezren's discard pile (in this example), so I can't imagine any scenario where it would break any other part of the game. It's simply a very effective healing item for Ezren, or anyone else who manages to succeed at the checks.

A more interesting question is whether Headband of Epic Intelligence breaks the system, which I'm about to post a thread about...

The infinite healing is using up 4 slots in your hand - that doesn't leave you with a lot of space to have anything for fighting - first sizeable monster you run into, you'll be in serious danger of losing all those cards.

Doesn't sound broken to me. I don't usually find healing to be a decisive factor in whether I complete a scenario or acquire useful boons...
