How do Paizo PDF look on a Kindle?

Technology

I'm pondering getting either a Kindle or a full Tablet PC at the moment, and one of the things I want to do is read some of the Paizo PDFs on them.

I know that most eBook Readers can read PDFs, but they're usually black/white too. So I'm sure a few people tried it out already, how do the Paizo PDFs look on a Kindle or one of the other readers like the Sony or Kobo?

Depends on the Kindle. On the HDX, they're as good as they would be on an IPad with Retina display.

On a Paperwhite, not so hot.

I have one of the first generation Kindles, and pdfs are not really it's thing.

Yes, figured as much, but thanks for confirming it. I'll look into getting myself a "real" tablet then.

I have a Kindle Fire HD (7"), and PDFs display just fine, although zooming in is needed. Page loading is fast enough. I run my PFS games off it.

I have the normal Fire and it works really well, even after 2 years. Still have to zoom a little, but page loading is fast.

I'd say get the Fire, HD, or HDX. HD dropped in price to a reasonable amount, so go for that.

Hm, isn't the Kindle Fire just basically a "normal" tablet?

Yeah. It has online capabilities and apps, but it has color and reads better than the standard kindle. I bought it two years ago for a reduced price when the Fire HD came out. I personally only need the kindle to read pdfs. Nothing more. I don't need Hulu or bluetooth. But if you want that, you can get the HD at a reduced price now.

The Kindle Fires and above ARE "real tablets". You do realize that there are several grades of Kindles now?

Yes, I do. But when I'm considering the Kindle Fire, then I'm not comparing it to eBook Readers anymore (where the Kindle family wins), I'm comparing it to tablets like the Samsung Tab 3 or the iPad.
And those might be better to take notes or fiddle with Roll20 etc.

However the Kindle HD seems to be really cheap compared to them, so that's an option.

Your only goalpost when you asked for this thread was on reading PDFs. It would have been helpful if you had bothered to mention that you had other requirements which kind of changed the whole dynamic.

As far as Roll20 goes, I'm not sure how any tablet will work for you. Obviously the Kindle is locked out of Google, but much of the others might not get you beyond getting up a Hangout interface.

True, my appologies. The main focus of this thread was to find out how Paizo PDFs display on an actual b/w Kindle, because I was curious about that. And I got this answered, thank you.

The whole Roll20 thing is a different thing, and I wouldn't even have mentioned it. I've been talking with a few people on the Roll20 board about that issue, and it seems it's not too great for it.

So a Kindle Fire might be an option, I hadn't even considered it before, so thank you :)

The 8.9 inch HDX is the best bet in the Kindle series. It's not that much more, and you can comfortably read a full page of text on it. And it's really great for Netflix, Huluu and other video watching because of it's speakers.

I also want to throw in the Kindle DX which you can find used on amazon and ebay. It has a larger e-ink screen and is much more rpg book friendly because of it. The Nook Touch also handles re-scaling of text in pdfs (as long as they are ocr and not just scans) making them, imo, more rpg pdf friendly as well.

As for useing them on a 'real' tablet I lean heavily to windows tablets. Everything just works. you've got full access to the official prd and the ogl srd via web browser, multiple options including actual adobe for reading any pdfs you might have and there are some great apps listing all spells, feats and traits and the author has a few more in the works. Looks for the new quad core atom tabs, they start around 350$ and you really can't go wrong. If you have the extra $ the new surface 3 is a perfect size but it isn't cheap.

I have a Kindle Fire HDX, the larger screen, and it reads and displays pdfs just fine.

What I've been wondering myself, is how do the Pathfinder Tales novels interface with it, and with the Paperwhite, actually. My kids have paperwhites, and I'd like to entice my son to try reading some Tales (he's 13), but I'm not the most e-book savvy person out there.

Not trying to hijack the thread, but does anyone have experience with buying the e-books from Paizo and reading them on a Kindle Paperwhite? Is it difficult to transfer them to the Paperwhite? Amazon does not appear to offer these books, last I looked.
