So Malwing's review of Into the Breach: Gunslinger mentions that there's a lot of room in the game for more modifications for the Gungineer's named gun. He's right. I held myself back because of space considerations but since we have a blog, there's no reason not to release a free expansion.

So what do you want in a gun? The gungineer is a high-technology-meets-fantasy concept so there's a ton of stuff we can do. If an idea is too out there for some people, they can always pick another. So throw out some ideas!

Low cost mods already include things like a bayonet, canted ironsights, compensator or reflex sight. Medium cost mods are elemental converters, alchemical power sources, mithral barrel, or a gun gauntlet. The highest cost mods allow you to integrate the gun into your hand, attach a multi-spectrum analyzer, or use the nuclear power of fusion to ash your foes.

So you can see that there's diversity. What else would you want to see? I'm already going to add an enhanced bayonet option (I'm thinking chain saw to make Marcus Fenix happy). What else would you want to do to your gun given unlimited freedom?

Kiel, you should know there's already a flechette launcher mod! Unless You're thinking of an underslung thing that shoots daggers? Ooh and doubles as a bayonet! OK, nevermind, I'm making that.

Good idea. It's already set up so that you can shoot electricity if that's your thang, but something that adds the staggered condition would be good. Maybe also a bonus to Intimidate "don't tase me, bro"-style.

That is already a default class feature of the Gungineer. They are loving crafted and maintained weapons (you're even required to name it) and don't fail like normal guns. Of course, you also have to pony up the cash for metal cartridges until you start adding power sources.

Edit: I should have noted this in the first post but I'm talking about mods for the special gun of an alternate class found in our latest Into the Breach book.

I'm going to throw concepts out there without regard for whether or not I believe that they are possible with actual rules.

1) A gun that sucks things in instead of shooting things out. Specifically ghosts.

2) A gun that shoots things that you sucked into it. Specifically Ghosts.

3) Time. Bullets that send things a minute into the future.

4) An Ice gun that entangles creatures.

5) An Ice gun that can make ice bridges. Preferably ones that you can slide on like Iceman from X-Men.

6) Water Gun.

7) An Ice gun that can freeze water so you can walk on it.

8) Tornado Gun.

9) Shark Gun. Summon Nature's Ally guns are fine but what I meant was that it shoots a shark that does one attack and then disappears.

10) Grappling Gun. If I have two I want to swing like Spider-man.

11) Grappling Gun where it brings stuff to you. Think Scorpion from Mortal Kombat.

12) Foam Gun.

13) A gun that shoots flammable oil.

14) If no one else is going to say it, then I will... Portal Gun.

15) Injection gun along with alchemical things to inject.

Ah, the Sister Ray. It would be a little hard for an adventurer to carry that around. However, remember how it charged up before shooting the Weapon that was coming at it? That's something I could make.

That seems like something I could add. I'm not sure how many people will want it since it's a low chance of encountering them. I need to figure out some way to make it useful all the time.

I had an idea that I abandoned that shot thin, micrometer opened portals which would take of slices of you. It was going to add the vorpal quality. But I kind of hate vorpal so I never added it. I'll think about what I might do.

Why, a Circular Saw Blade Gun, of course.

Since we're in a magical world, why not make it so that I can sort of steer the circular saw blades in flight? :)

It doesn't have to just be ghosts. I just want a Kirby gun. I specified ghosts because ghostbusters.

Yes, underslung dagger launcher.

Also...a returning single shot sniper type of barrel. Never leave evidence.

It's somewhat like a WMD crossed with a rod of wonder. Here's an excerpt from the book that I hope helps explain it. I mostly like the idea of a gun with a sense of humor about what it fires.

Depends on what you want it to do. I have some ideas on a variable power mod that would allow you to increase or decrease the effective gravity of a target to various levels. Maybe give it a number of charges that could be spent to do the variable effects.

Bury people in rapidly solidifying foam, block line of sight, stop rampaging horses, snuff out fires, provide sugary goodness to lots of kids...it all depends on what type of foam!

Surprised no one mentioned a "heal other" gun from a certain tournament oriented game.

OK, so lazy guns are the right kind of ridiculous. It is utterly impossible to balance as written since it scales up to thermonuclear, city destroying fire. But I can come up with something.

Sounds good- though I originally meant something kinda like the gravity gun from Half-Life that sounds like it could be better.

Also another idea- a rocket launcher; not necessarily a rocket propelled grenade but I have always liked the ideas of bolters or even weapons that launch fireworks (weaponized bottle-rockets!).

The Mega Buster. Rather, just give me everything out of Mega Man 2 and I'll be a happy camper.

And I mean everything. Give me the ability to touch the corpse of a freshly-dead creature with an elemental subtype, then do bullet damage of that energy type instead of physical damage for a short period of time.

Give me the ability to point my gun at the ground and go flying up into the air as if I had just hopped on good ol' Rush.

Let me shoot sawblades. Big ones that force a Fortitude save or a random limb is severed on a critical hit. Make me roll on that same table if I misfire.

I actually really like the idea of a gun attachment that can be filled with the blood or other essence of a creature with an elemental subtype and then deal that type of damage.


A thought occurred, most combat maneuvers can be made into guns.

Grapple = Sticky foam gun

Sunder = Microwave gun

Bull Rush = Repulsor gun

Disarm = Magnetic Pulse

Drag = Tractor Beam

Pin = Density Drive

Reposition = Portal gun

Steal = Transmat Beam

Trip = Earthquake Generator

Dirty Trick = Anti-luck Resonator

Feint = Smokescreen Shot

Careful with that, though. Spammable ranged combat maneuvers are one of those things that can easily be broken. Look at the price of magic items that do it a couple of times per day.


True, although I'm sure there's some workarounds through nerfing them or making them more conditional or costly.

Yeah, I was actually thinking along similar lines Malwing. What I'm thinking about is mods with a number of charges equal to your intelligence mod. This makes Int more valuable for the gungineer, which I should have done more of in retrospect.

Rough draft of the gravity distortion mod is a bottom rail mod that staggers on ranged touch for 1 charge, pins for 3 charges, sends you into the sky to fall down hard for 5 points.

1)A way to have your gun crawl about on little robo-legs! Why would I want it permanently affixed to me when it can just siton my shoulder and follow me around?

2) Plasma guns!

3) A gun that has a pithing needle (bloodletting tool) for a bayonet.

4) A gun that is synched to your DNA so when someone else tries to wield it they take damage and have to Reflex save not to drop it.

5) A gun that I can shoot mines out of. Both land AND sea!

6) A shovel-launcher.

7) A propeller-launcher, sorta like a grappling hook, but if it reaches its max range without hitting anything, it pulls you into the air. If it hits someONE, it does slashing damage.

8) A gun built into an Umbrella or Scepter.

9) A gun that can Command Undead.

10) A gun that shoots caltrops.

11) A gun where the bullets are returning, but only if they miss.

12) A gun that I can use to launch small crystals.

13) A gun that launches copper spikes, making it so that unless they're removed, the target has vulnerability to electricity.

14) A gun that shoots drills. (The Giga Drill Buster will be mine!)

15) A gun that hijacks constructs.

16) A gun that shoots splash weapons.

17) An anchor gun that functions like a super-heavy hookshot, and functions underwater.

18) A gun that can spray inhaled poisons.

I really liked the mechanic we came up with for the Trickshot in this book. Final Fantasy Tactics' Engineer job ability meets Pathfinder for ranged dirty tricks. (shameless plug)

Sentry gun! Set your gun up on a tripod, load it, and put a marker of some sort on your allies. When something walks on by without a marker, fire away.

Dual-linked weaponry! When rolling damage, you deal full damage of your normal damage type and half damage of a second damage type. You don't get both! After resistances and/or DR, the higher damage dealt is the actual damage you deal.

Homing beacon! Select a damage type. Attacks that deal damage of the chosen type get +2 to hit the target. Great for supporting everything from fellow dakkasmiths to the low-Dex sorcerer with scorching ray.


Sonic gun:
Hi frequency, high damage in a line. Lo frequency, nausea effects in a cone.


Opera Singer - Chance to stun on hit.
Gabriel's Bark - Deactivates force fields.
Ozzie - All bats in range make a Fortitude save or their heads explode

I'm not sure the game needs something like this but I'm planning a section of wackier options that will be lower priority, if I have time kind of things.

Bomb Launcher is the top of the line bottom rail in the book. It gives you bombs at an alchemist level equal to half your gungineer level.

Gun that shoots alchemical bombs especially ones with the mods like the gas ones.

On the portal gun idea I'm picturing a switch that opens a small dimensional door you can jump thru or better shoot thru.

1) Minigun. I need to make a magical element shooting minigun.

2) Freeze ray for incapacitating targets ala Mr.Freeze

3) Bola gun

4) Flamethower attachment

5) Mine attachment to shoot out mines or sticky grenades ala the demo from TF2 or with the magical power source Halo's Plasma grenades/ Incendiary grenades or New Forerunner grenades.

6) injection gun. For my Alchemist/ Gungineer

7) Positive/negative energy option

8) Multiple Barrels to shoot different kinds of things all at once!

9) Nuclear Bazooka/ Beam Bazooka

12) A charge system/ a system to shoot out raw energy blasts that is Dragonball levels on the anime scale. Nanoha's Starlight Breaker is a great example of this concept.

13) Smoke grenades or smokescreen shots to obscure vision

14) Funnels. They are remote controlled small drone like units that are mobile and shoot enemies for reduced damage.

15. Scanner augment to gather information.

16. A gravity gun that deals bludgeoning damage/ remove debris or hold someone in place. Both a non lethal and lethal version or picking up random object and shooting them ala the kinesis gun from Dead space.

17. Lets shoot out Sawblades/magical saw blades for dismemberment.

18 The Ion Cannon. Also the Bass Cannon.

19. An enchantment gun. To give someone a friendly Zap!

20. I really would like to see the Gungineer either make like a battle suit that integrates his guns and augments into his body or makes a battle suit like Iron man.( Most likely not suitable for this class ((see what I did there)) but food for thought for the future.)

TF2 Medics gun...except this one can suck life out of a creature and spit it back out to whomever you choose.
