What to play...

Advice

Okay I have another shot at hopefully completing a RotRL campaign though it requires me restarting with a new group. I had played up through book 2 previously so I know all the early stuff and even some of the later but I need opinions on what would shine more. In the case of our party, of the 5 playing we are gonna have a Cleric and an Inquisitor, both with a melee focus. Our third member is one that is the least experienced of the group and will probably play something mechanically simple such as a Barbarian, Fighter, or Monk though I am leaning towards one of the first two. Leaving myself and an unknown character. Immediately Wizard is screaming at me for a controller/blaster role which I am perfectly okay with, however that leaves so many missing pieces of our party puzzle in the hands of a potential unknown. Most importantly we are without a face unless the Inquisitor takes up that minor role. We also need a scout, trap guy, and some range. Already a Ranger can fix all of that BUT if our 5th unknown does not even come through then we are missing all of it. So to fix this I have also considered a Ranger1/Wizard1/EK10/AA4 build to fill in for all the above roles if it comes down to a 4 man group, but I am still unsure if that particular combo can get us through to the later books or not. Thoughts and opinions??

With a melee heavy party you could use a Bard for a mixture of support, scout/face and arcane magic, while sort of ticks all the boxes. Naturally, you won't be as straight-up potent as a Wizard though. Bard, Wizard or Sorcerer would all complement the party well and can all act as solid faces (if you take clever wordplay on the wizard) +/- sages. I've not played RotRL, but I understand that full casters help a lot later on.

Realistically your Inquisitor should be skilled enough to cover either the Scout and/or Face role, it would help to know which.

Well I think the plan is to have a big sit down in the near future so we can assign the necessary roles or discuss party strategy. I just like to be a few steps ahead of the curve for last minute what if scenarios. A Bard was one of my other choices but only if someone else takes the role of full caster. I can't stand the idea of not having a go to blast option when need be.

So your party is basically missing a dedicated

buffer/debuffer&cc caster and a face?

Sorcerer, done.

My only qualm with Sorcerer in RotRL is my spell selection. I have considered Arcanist as well but still gotta wait on the finalized copy before I consider that particular route.

Who needs a Face in RotRL? Everything is going to be solved By force and your gonna end up fighting.

I recommend a Wizard. Because this is a WIZARD campaign. This campaign could be good for a Enchanter, Necromancer, Transmuter, and Conjurer. I've played it through before and the campaign once you reach higher levels your role play options open up. Also since your opposition will have 9th level spells you should be packing some as well.

Also I plan on playing it again for PFS credit and I'm doing a Necromancer wizard myself and going to abuse Magic Jar. Nothing like completely controlling the battle field by turning enemies against each other then then Raising them (as undead) to push into the next room only to be repeated till everything is dead. Once the domino effect starts it is hard to stop.

I propose a human sylvan sorcerer. The animal companion adds even more melee, while you have one of the best faces in the whole game AND the fey part of the arcana adding +2 to DC on some great spells that your getting free is a major win. The animal companion is t really needed except for that it will free you personally up to cast safely. You should only need charisma and constitution for your PC really. A dex of 14 would be preferable but not essential.

I would make your PCs focus of control rather than damage. Having said that, I'd grab the two traits that lower metamagic spells by one level for your traits (or extra trait feat). My logic is grab fireball spell at level 3 and then dazing spell feat so you can be casting dazing fireball at level 4 spell. That one spell will be all you should need for most fights and when it isn't you didn't "prepare" a dead spell like wizard.

Alternatively if you want massive damage max do the same with scorching ray but grab quickened and empowered metamagic instead so you can at level 8 be one round casting 2 quickened rays of 4D6 + 2 rays of 6D6. 20D6 is nothing to sneeze at.

After much deliberation I have it down to a Sorc1/Wiz19 for a blast/control build via Rime and Daze OR a straight Sylvan Sorcerer. Just gotta wait to see the final party before the die is officially cast.

Great choice, but I think you lose the +2 to enchantment DC to get the Animal Companion.

By the way, Kitsune have the Favored Class option of: Sorcerer: Add +1/4 to the DC of enchantment spells. Which is nice if you go with the regular Fey bloodline.

Honestly Human and Kitsune are the two best options for a Fey Sorcerer. Go Human if you want more spell options, go Kitsune if you wanna rock using compulsion spells. I personally prefer options but it is hard to deny a Kitsune.

You could also go totally nuts and do a Half-Elf Separatist Cleric of some animal deity and pick up the druid domain (is it eagle or hawk?) as your "not deity" domain with all the wis-based ranged buffs as your extra and use a half-elf racial to grab longbow proficiency.

Then you take boon companion and have a fully leveled animal companion and hawk familiar. They flank a target with each other while you pepper it with arrows. Need to heal someone? Hawk can deliver the touch attack at range for you.

Use large summons to control the battlefield.
