Crossbows & Spiked Gauntlets

Rules Questions

The Exchange

Umbertos Falconi is a heavy crossbowman with the feats Rapid Reload (Heavy Crossbow) and Crossbow Mastery, allowing him to reload his heavy crossbow as a free action without provoking attacks of opportunity; he wears a spiked gauntlet on each hand.

Do wearing these spiked gauntlets interfere with his ability to fire and reload his heavy crossbow?

While wielding his heavy crossbow, does Umbertos threaten adjacent squares with his spiked gauntlets?

While wielding his heavy crossbow, can Umbertos take attacks of opportunity with his spiked gauntlets?

RAW wise.

he can reload just fine (nothing in the gauntlet says it can't.)

This one is debatable.. but techincally you can hold but not fire the heavy crossbow with one hand, (as you do let go of it to reload). So he could fire an arrow, then drop to one handed and slap someone with his gauntlet.

I'm not too sure about this one. but I believe he can take AOO if he takes one hand off the crossbow before the end of his turn (you can not shoot a heavy crossbow one handed but you can hold it in one-after all that's how you reach for a bolt and fit it) So he should threaten with it.

The gauntlets are closer to heavy gloves than boxing gloves.

There can be some debate on it (after all people disliked the spear + armour spikes thing, which may or may not have had FAQs on it).

but I'm pretty sure that is all valid; though don't go nuts with the free action hand shifting.

I'll echo Zwordsman.

Gauntlets, spiked or otherwise, do not interfere with the loading or firing of any crossbow.

As long as you take one hand off your crossbow at the end of your turn that hand will be available to make attacks of opportunity.
