Advice for swapping out shadows and greater shadow?

Advice

I don't really like the mechanics of shadows as monsters so if I can find a thematic replacement I'd like to do so for one upcoming potential encounter in an AP I'm running. The encounter right now has one greater shadow (CR 8) and six shadows (CR 3). The supernatural dungeon theme is witchery, darkness, cold, age, death, and winter.

I have access to a ton of pathfinder and 3e materials that I am willing to use, so if you think of something that sounds fitting of roughly that CR range let me know.

Thanks.

Which mechanics don't you like? The strength damage? The fact that they are incorporeal?

How about some Shae? They are suitably 'shadowy' and 'mysterious', they are decent at melee, and they can use shadow evocation to simulate some wizard spells. Maybe a few regular ones to replace the regular shadows?

The shadow template and shadow lord template from bestiary 4 (the new emerald spire super dungeon also has the shadow fire template I believe) can also be applied to some other creatures with a shadow theme. But I agree--would need to hear more about what you don't like about the mechanics.

I dislike the killing strength damage from 7 touch attacks, adjudicating hit and run incorporeal into the walls, and the create spawn aspects.

I'm looking more for ready to run than templates or levels unless the templates are fairly simple without recalculating lots of stuff.

The shaes look promising. Thanks for the lead.

OH...now that you say it out loud, I can see why that would be frustrating for players, and it would make the GM feel like the bad guy for using it to full advantage.

Anyway, Shae have fairly good stats, so putting some class levels on them would work out well (wizard, sorcerer, or witch would work out beautifully).
