D&D in 5 of top 6 spots on Amazon but PF Core is still in spot 7

4th Edition

Liberty's Edge

I am impressed the PF Core Rulebook is till in spot 7 years after it released for Fantasy Gaming on amazon.com. D&D is in five of the six top spots. D&D has a huge spike now. I wonder what it will look like in 6 months?

The good news is it looks like both D&D and PF can both be very successful at the same time at least on Amazon. Which is good for the hobby as a whole.

Keep in mind that a substantial portion of Paizo's sales are by direct subscription, whereas Wizards is one hundred percent vendor sales.

I only make purchases from Amazon by last resort. If I want a Paizo book that's not covered by subscription, I'd rather go and support my local gaming store first. Especially after Amazon pulled it's latest dick move with the Comixology app.

Liberty's Edge

True. I do like Wizards model of releasing books two weeks early to many gaming stores. I'm willing to pay full price not only to get my D&D books two weeks early and but also to support my local store (which also hosts my game night). In fact, Wizards has a store locator right in their product catalog that lets you search for a local store. I like that a lot.

I, unfortunately, have to drive about 90 miles to the nearest gaming store. (From Tampa to Orlando. WTF, Tampa Florida?) So what I do is I try to buy the books I get from smaller stores that use Amazon as their online store front.

I wonder what the rules for Wizards are on this? Could the store ship you the book? Or would that violate the agreement with Wizards? I honestly don't know. But it seems it would still help the store and help the customer who wants to be loyal but has no physical practical means to do so.

Also, thanks a lot for tempting me with your infernal kickstarter. I like your company's stuff a lot but don't play S&W or PF. Now, you are trying to lure me in with your 5E goodness. As if the $170 bill for D&D 5E itself isn't enough already!:)

Point of order: The Pathfinder Core Rulebook will be five years old next month, not seven.

I think you misread that initial line. I did the same at first! I believe the statement is intended to be parsed as 'the PF Core Rulebook is still in (spot 7) (years after it is released)'.

I think you are correct. :)

Hi Chuck, I live on the other coast (Titusville) but this used to be a great gaming store. I believe it's still open???

Thanks, Scranford, the problem that I have with a lot of these places is that their websites don't show that they sell tabletop RPGs, so unless I KNOW that they sell what I'm looking for, I really can't take the day for the family to go check it out.

RPG Superstar Season 9 Top 4, RPG Superstar 2015 Top 32

Impressive, but not too surprising. I see no reason why both Pathfinder and D&D can't have lots of success.

CB, yes.....unless you are the CB who has been much in the UK news

Chuck, go to Dark Side Comics and Games in Sarasota. Excellent store with good RPG support, a whole shelf full of Pathfinder merchandise, and lots of regular gaming groups throughout the week for a variety of systems. Closer than Orlando also. I am in a weekly Star Wars game there right now, but there are many Pathfinder groups, including Society games.

I'll check it out when I have the funds again. Nothing worse than going to a gaming store when you can't buy anything.

Not surprising that Pathfinder is high on the list. In RPGs there really is little to no competition for D&D and Pathfinder is just a version of D&D. A Star Wars RPG can do well since it's Star Wars but anything else is niche.

I plan to buy both the new 5e books and keep buying Pathfinder books. There's no reason it has to be "one or the other", and I bet many others will do the same.
