Rangers in PFS

Hi,

So I have a PFS ranger that's about to qualify for an animal companion. The Additional Resources doc lists dozens of animal companions that are legal in PFS beyond the CRB, but the PFS FAQ document says that rangers can only take the animal companions listed in the CRB. Are any of those legal for PFS rangers, or are we just stuck with the basic list in core unless we get a boon that specifically states that, as a ranger, I can take something else? I've looked around and can't find an official explanation of how this works, so I'd really appreciate it if someone could help me understand exactly what companions and sources I can draw from as a ranger in PFS.

Thanks!

I've flagged this thread as the wrong forum because this PFS specific question and belongs there.

Unfortunately, I can't answer the question for you because it is specific to PFS.

However, my guess is that the animal companions listed in the Additional Resources list are for Druids only.

Druids say:

Quote:
A druid may begin play with any of the animals listed in the Animal Companions

Rangers say:

Quote:
ranger who selects an animal companion can choose from the following list: badger, bird, camel, cat (small), dire rat (see the Pathfinder RPG Bestiary), dog, horse, pony, snake (viper or constrictor), or wolf.

You are limited to that list unless the rule for the new animal companion specifically says you can choose it for a ranger.

You could retrain into the Beast Master archetype. You need a copy of Ultimate Campaign to do this.
EDIT: And a copy of the APG
That would open up the full Druid list of animal companions for you.

Retraining Rules
You need 5 days per class feature gained or replaced to retrain.
Page 10 of the PFS guide says you pay 1PA per day of retraining in addition to the appropriate gp cost.

Beast Master will change only your Class Skills before you hit 4th level, so you would need to spend 5 days (5 PA) and 150gp (assuming you're 3rd level).
Totally doable.

Take the Boon Companion feat at 5th level.

You answered your own question ;-)

There are a couple boons that open up exotic Animal Companions, and the new Monstrous Mount feat from Inner Sea Combat is legal as well.

BigNorseWolf also has a really helpful guide HERE worth checking out.

If you do go beast master, don't forget to retrain the boon companion feat at 12th.
