Mythic Confusion

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

I feel seriously half witted asking this AND I'm not sure that this is where the question fits but.....

It seems from reading many other people's posts and answers to my posts, that Mythic rules now seem to have replaced all previous rules and definitions in the Pathfinder system. I thought that the Mythic system rules were created specifically for Wrath of the Righteous which wasn't supposed to bleed over to all other products...am I right??? Are Mythic rules, definitions, concepts, etc. now assumed to be system wide? Or am I just managing to only read threads and posts where people are using Mythic rules and definitions for everything?

If the Mythic concepts and rules AREN'T replacing standard Pathfinder system concepts and rules, are we stuck with sort of a Frankenpathfinder now with it all jumbled together? I would really really really love if we could stop the bleed over. Am I the only person that wants to keep them separate? I love the Pathfinder system in it's un-mythic state. For all of my complaining and obnoxious opinionated posts I only play Pathfinder and I don't want it relegated to the unsupported systems bone yard :(

Sorry if this is coming out barely intelligible, sleep dep is a lovely thing.

It's not "replacing" anything, but simply adding to things. Mythic rules will still be used sparsely, but they'll still be there.

I think you are looking at this in the wrong light. Mythic rules did not "beget" Arazni or Demigods, but rather the other way around. They had intended to do things like Battle Demon Lords and truly epic level characters from the start. They invented Mythic as an alternative to the epic levels from 3.5. And, of course, mythic rules are designed to work side by side, rather than replace or add on top of existing.

I wouldn't worry too much. I don't think Paizo wants mythic to become the norm, either. Just a cool option for high powered characters. And hell, they don't even have another mythic book or adventure path planned. I hope this made sense and alleviated your concern.

Thanks =} I had just typed up a long and hopefully non cranky post =P But I just accidentally deleted it, so I'll post an equally convoluted post tomorrow. I really want to (nicely) talk about the mythic "system". The two game store owners that I know are telling me that they thought Paizo was doing away with pathfinder for mythic pathfinder. So, I had to ask. If it wasn't causing absolute literal hell in my gaming group between myself and a couple of players, I'd be a lot more in love with it.

Too tired to think witty. I'll post more when I'm awake.

Okay, I'm back with my annoyingly long post...

Thanks =}

I know that the Mythic concept was to give players a way to play seriously over the top hero characters, which I'm really excited about. I'm hopefully going to be playing rather than gm'ing Wrath of the Righteous and I really want to have fun with it. I know that Arazni, quasi deities, demi deities and true gods existed well before mythic and this just gives us a way to interact with them in game. I'm still worried that the Mythic Rules and concepts won't swollow the rest of original pathfinder. I'm good with updates on Pathfinder (Pathfinder 4.0 or what ever) just not something so system changing. Nothing like D&D 4E PLEASE!

When I started work on this current 0 to 30+ level campaign , it was before I had Carrion Crown to add info from. The campaign involves complicated events and situations during the Shining Crusade revolving around Arazni, Iomedae, General Arnisant, Tar-Baphon and a number of other major and minor players. Things occured during the Crusade that set in motion situations that would unfold almost 900 years later and have serious impact on the world. the pc's are rapidly swept in this and out for a long and bumpy ride. It's been seriously dangerous and anyone can take a dirt nap at any time. Several of them have have done so a number of times now. It's been wild, challenging and fun. I did my best with the information that I had at the time to create what I thought would be a viable character for Arazni then as a goddess and later in her lich form. I didn't have the mythic rules to go on. I took every scrap of anything written about Arazni that I could find, decided with all of the various sources bouncing between goddess and demi goddess that I'd play it in the middle and go for a lesser goddess. She has been called a goddess at least as many times (that I've found) as a demi goddess. So I apologize for the crankiness over the constant inconsistencies over her goddess level. It doesn't really matter, but inconsistencies bug me. It's not Paizo's responsibility to keep all of their references as obsessively tidy as I want them. I've written reams of details for this campaign

Io is a danged goddess ppppfft! She was fun to make up as a mortal though
It's fun to see the paladin and priest of her faith in the campaign experience the awe and wonderment of walking where thier goddess walked. (Good roll play by my players btw) =}

I've done the same for Tar-Baphon. Pretty much taken anything that I could find and put it all together into a seriously scary individual for the campaign. And I've done so with the other major npc's

I write seriously dark stuff. NEVER let a dark core Goth write your game material =}

And then came mythic rules.

So my group is just now hitting 15th level, I've been using some parts of the Carrion Crown AP and we are up to the last encounter and are trying to get a vital piece of information from the loony big bad guy at the end before it's lost. And then several of the players find the mythic write ups on Tar-Baphon and Arazni and decide that they ONLY want those version in the campaign AND that they not only want me to re-write the entire campaign but start over from 1st level with a mythic event that allows them to start as ascended characters...

I'm already adding mythic elements and writing some of my own to fit the campaign. After all, the Mythic rules WERE made for another campaign and creating, oh I don't know, I guess I'll call them demi mythic paths or what ever to fit my own is a lot of fun. The mythic rules are good for adding a structured path for ultra high level play. My version of Tar Baphon and Arazni are quite a bit more powerful and that isn't making several players happy since they know what they are written up as and want to be able to know what they're facing. I stood my ground and said that I wouldn't dump my years of campaign material to start over mythic and now we have a war between various players and I.

So I'm po'd about both the Arazni thing, I've never seen any thing in written paizo material that lists her as a quasi deity or what ever, only that she was a goddess or demi goddess, both of which have been used interchangably. I'm absolutely sorry if I'm wrong, I likely don't have the rescource or haven't found it and I don't check the board for new information all of the time. The instigator of my game group fight wants her to be a quasi deity in the campaign now and always wants the latest thing said by paizo members about anything in the game. I'm upset that they published stats for npc's that should have been left to allow GM's to create the power level and abilities of. Some players ONLY want canon and it has really ruined my campaign. So rather immaturly, I'm upset for personal reasons. I feel that I owe all of you that I blew up at a reason for my tantrum.

And I'm irked because some of the mythic concept is bleeding over into every thing in Pathfinder material and virtually rendering anything published before it obsolete as far as most players that I know are treating it and it seems many posters on the boards as well. So it IS personal because some of us have long running campaigns that were created before mythic rules were added and it has made a mess of them. Re-writting everything to be Mythic canon will severly change my campaign since I'm trying to accomodate the wishes of the players as much as possible. Mythic is great and hopefully capable of more versatility, but I wish that they hadn't turned some of the biggest and most mysterious individuals in Golarion into giant end bosses. Now rather than the complicated and highly dangerous campaign that we've been playing the last three years, several of the players want to turn it into a giant splatter fest.

So I really do hope that the mythic frenzy either dies down or they create a "Mythic Golarion" so that the hard core canonistos can choose which version they'll use. This bleed is making a mess with me and my campaign. Sorry for both the not so good English and the super long post.

The mythic rules are as optional as anything presented in the hardcover rules line. They're an option that pretty much has to be used wholesale (exception: mythic monsters can make great challenges for non-mythic campaigns).

But, at the end of the day, your campaign is your campaign. Do your players object to non-warrior orcs in your campaign? Because the only orcs in the bestiary are warriors. Do not let your players dictate your NPC stats to you. That way madness lies. The only reason I can conceive of for them to demand that you use the "official" versions of NPCs is so that they can look up the stats and prepare for them.

Simple (passive-aggressive warning) solution: tell them you're using the official versions, the GM-fiat their stats to the versions you've already prepared. If they object, they're metagaming.

Sounds like they need to roll their sleeves up and GM a campaign of their own, then, doesn't it?

Your store owners don't know their product.

Well, honestly, I think a lot of PF fans prefer Mythic to Epic level rules because it feels more "super powered". You don't just have higher stats. You can throw dinosaurs like baseballs and be unkillable.

I think the problem you are running into here is that Pathfinder diverged from the old way of things and that has created a schism. Now, you don't have to do much reworking, honestly, if you want to drop mythic tiers on their characters as is (because Mythic is really good at doing that stuff). Of course, you could just stay the course and tell them to suck it up or don't play.

One last thing to understand about mythic is that they changed the idea of what amount of power a given level or CR has. Just because Tar Baphon and Arazni are lower CR than what you may have planned doesn't mean that they are weaker than what you thought they were. They just adjusted the assumed ranges, with 20+ being an approach to godhood in level. 30+ just means godly in PF now.
