Arcane Discoveries and Prestige Class advancement

Rules Questions

Scarab Sages

I have this Illusionist, see? I was thinking of becoming a Veiled Illusionist or Loremaster - however, I want the Resilient Illusions Arcane Discovery - so my question is: If one takes a prestige class that permits continued advancement as a Wizard, does that include advancing as a Wizard for the purposes of meeting level requirements for Arcane Discoveries? I know it doesn't for School Powers....

Are you a multiclass wizard? Because if not, I don't see the need to worry too much. Non-wizard levels, even in presige classes for arcane casters, don't add to wizard levels for arcane discoveries.

Meaning (just so we're clear) that if I become a Veiled Illusionist or Loremaster at the earliest opportunity (character level 6 or 8, respectively), I won't be able to take Resilient Illusions at character level 9, so perhaps I should stick with my original plan of adopting a prestige class at character level 11?

Yeah. It means the days of prestige start later, but you'll also have the discovery you want.

Fair enough. Thanks.

the only exception I know to this is the eldritch knight. As it counts towards arcane caster class levels for the sake of feats. And since any wizard can take discoveries as feats if his wizard level is high enough. it would qualify. although only if you spend a feat on it.

RAW and RAI is that unless the prestige class mentions that it advances your wizard levels in respect to arcane discoveries (like the Eldritch Knight as Diekssus points out) then you don't get to stack prestige class levels with your wizard levels for them (even if the prestige level grants spellcasting).

Personally speaking though, I think it is just another un-needed kick in the teeth of prestige classes and I would houserule allow it.
