Kobold Press - this summer's PF kickstarter?

Product Discussion

Dear Kobold Taskmasters,

This time last year, you had seduced me with all things Midgardian and then announced the Deep Magic kickstarter while I was on vacation. It was my first Kickstarter and Deep Magic did not disappoint!

So...

I'm on vacation. I need to be enticed each day with an ever growing list of stretch goals! I want that PF Southlands hardcover! Please take my money!

Seriously, I have it set aside. When are we going to see a Kickstarter announcement?

Sincerely,

Desperate for more PF Midgard Goodness.

It's been 5 minutes. WTH? No update?

What, is it We No Work Day again already?

Liberty's Edge

Ha! Keep in mind that most of the Kobolds are at PaizoCon so announcements will be slow for a bit.

I however am NOT at PaizoCon this year ... And will say that your wish will soon be granted :)

In fact, there is one very cool stretch goal/backer reward I am super over the moon excited about!!!!

How was that for a teaser? :)

(Reads Mr. Radle's post and then begins singing/hissing a kobold battle hymn.)

Thanks, Marc! That'll do....for now. :)

Well, for those who did not get the announcement, the next Kobold Press project is going to be.....

The Southlands

Exploring points south of the current Midgard map. Full of pulp adventure, exotic locals, incredible creatures, fabulous treasures and, of course, loads of news spells, character options and equipment.

It's being written by Ben McFarland and Brian Suskind (me) and as always closely monitored by our kobold overlord, Wolfgang Baur.

As to when it is launching, I believe the plan is for it to greenlight sometime around Gencon. Hope that's enough to whet your appetite!

The only part of this I can't confirm is the "launching around GenCon" part.

It will launch after the show, because it would be pure insanity to try to run a Kickstarter while at Gen Con. But yes, the elements are starting to come together for something great.

Thanks, mighty kobolds!

You've stopped next week's "where's the next update?" message.....for now. :)

Well, "around" is a vague term. Could mean close to Gencon, could mean within the same year as Gencon. :)

[emphasis mine] Brian - should that be "exotic locales"?

@Wolfgang: Any idea on how how much this will be brainstormed beyond what Ben and Brian have already written?

Liberty's Edge

I can say that the art that's coming in for this is AMAZING!

Oh, and did I mention the very cool stretch goal/backer reward I am super over the moon excited about??? :)

OK I understand that...

... but is it cool?

Liberty's Edge

It's cool ... Cool to the power of seven :)

Ahem.

I feel that I have allowed a reasonable amount of time to pass since the conclusion of GENCON. Therefore, I feel that I must ask the following, with the appropriate deference and decorum....

WHERE'S THE SOUTHLANDS KICKSTARTER?!?!?!?!

Inquiring Pathfinder minds want to know. :)

No, seriously, where is it?

Nothing, huh?

I think Wolfgang is on his post-GenCon vacation. I imagine we'll hear something next week. :)

Let me see if I can cast summon kobold ...

**bampf** One kobold summoned! **

I'm happy to say that the video is almost ready, the design and editing of the rules and setting are well along, and the art is rolling in. There was supposed to be a series of blog posts about the Southlands coming at KoboldPress.com, but I think Gen Con may have pushed those back a bit.

The planned launch date is still mid-September. But you'll hear more about it soon.

Wow, Marc! What level spell is that?

I'm guessing it's a variant of Summon Monster I, maybe in the upper ranges (5-7th level?), since Herr Baur is hardly your average CR 1/4 Kobold...

Sovereign Court

Awesome !

Thank you, oh mighty kobold chieftain! Sounds great!

And thanks, Marc. That's a pretty cool spell. :)

The real question, though, isn't its level - its whether it's considered kobold, devil, or dragon magic! ;)

Agreed! Southlands IS going to be awesome! Very different (in the best possible way) from typical books like this. I'm really excited for this to launch!

Oh, and just wait to you see the art! There is some fantastic art for this bad boy - genies and werelions and ankh wielding clerics and dwarves with pharaoh-style beards and ...

Sorry, the art for Southlands is really awesome is what I'm saying :)

I'm very much looking forward to this. It does look like it's going to be different.

Into the Southlands!

The Kickstarter is live!

-Ben.

The Exchange Contributor; Publisher, Kobold Press; RPG Superstar Judge

Alive and more than half-funded! Ye gads.

Just a quick update. The Southlands fully funded in a single day and now we are chomping through the stretch goals.

We are now only $600 from the Well of Urd stretch goal and 20 backers from the Hero Lab bonus!

Please check us out at....

The neat freebie PDF download is nice. But is it of low res? Because the writing looks a little fuzzy, not crisp? Especially against the parchment background.

The PDF is definitely optimized for onscreen viewing and smaller file size, and that optimization does reduce the resolution of graphics etc, but not text (or, perhaps more accurately, not enough to be noticed).

I actually just downloaded the PDF and compared it to my original PDF and the look pretty much identical, including nice crisp type.

Is it possible your download got corrupted or something? Maybe try re-downloading it?

The Exchange Contributor; Publisher, Kobold Press; RPG Superstar Judge

Could it be a font embedding issue? Has anyone else seen fuzzy type on the preview?

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Mmm might even be the font size, it was just next to the Campaign Guide (which has smaller font) and the comparison makes the larger text look more pixelated.

It also looks fine on my better resolution/PPI Surface Pro 3. I normally read PDFs on that but was taking a sneak peek on my desktop - never again! Carry on, nothing to see here! Sorry :D

Scarab Sages

Will the free adventure make it to backers of the project? it's tough to like your FB page with my G+ account....lol

The Southlands adventure will ship to backers when they're done, but we're still in development on most of them, and the

Right now, NEVERMORE by Richard Pett is an exclusive offer to fans of our Facebook page (and it is not related to the Southlands project at all). After the Facebook promotion is over we plan to make that adventure available more broadly.

But we're drifting wildly off topic...
