Hi All,
Looking for a consensus on improved familiar...
The text of the feat says "Elemental, Small (any type)" does that stretch to Mud/Ice/Magma/Lightning or just the 4 oh-so-boring standard elements.
Personally I think it should be allowed. The small elementals (any of the eight) are still far below strength compared to other improved familiars, so not game breaking. Opening it out gives far more flavour (winter witch with ice familiar etc)
Related question - how about the same in PFS.
Cheers

For PFS the answer is likely "no".
You can't summon Bestiary II elementals via spells, so the same logic regarding Familiars should apply.
But I do use the words "likely" and "should".

By RAW, the Improved Familiar feat should apply to more than just those types of elemental. Magmin are also small elementals. As are crysmals. Both would be allowed by the wording of the feat. (This is a problem of "Elemental" being a creature subtype, as well as being a specific type of elemental-subtype creatures. All elementals are elementals, but not all elementals are elementals.)
However, it is Paizos policy to not expand things like the summon spells with each new bestiary that comes out. The same should apply in this case as well, which would limit you to only the 4 typical elementals - fire, earth, water, and air.
