@aberzombie I think Drona Cray is what im going with :)

spoiler:
Ive got hopes for Victor. I have a feeling making amends with his first child is going to be a big part of the downfall of Drona Cray. Season 3 so far away! I cant wait for people to find out about Doc frankensteins secrets. That moment with John Claire and Vannessa was worth the whole season. I cant imagine Ethan will be happy to see franken-brona

@aberzombie- Lyle was referring to his being Jewish, which Victor learned last week when he said a prayer before battle.

That was one awesome season finale. I love GoT, but I think this show tops it.

I wouldnt go that far. However, I would go the distance to say that Showtime's Borgias was better than both. A shame it got cancelled.

Dark Archive

Spoiler:
Everyone had a pyrrhic victory, at best, often losing more than they won.

Except Lyle. 'Cause he blew someone away while bragging about his fabulous hair. As one does.

That's what I was hoping, but wanted to check around and make sure.

I dunno...I would say this season Penny Dreadful whooped the pants off of GoT (%#%# Dorne) and so far True Detective as well.

New season starts this Sunday (May 1st)!

Scarab Sages

HUZZAH! I've been watching ever preview I can find. Can't wait for Sunday night!!!!

Sovereign Court

I cant wait either. Since GoT is off the rails im looking for something thats written well for a change! May Day, May Day!

Scarab Sages

Woot! My favorite gothic horror show is back for round 3!!!

Spoiler:
Damn! Miss Ives really let herself go. It was almost sad to see her living that way. I like them bringing back Patti Lupone to play Dr. Seward. What a transformation! The scene between the two of them was really good. You could see a bit of the old Miss Ives shining beginning to re-emerge.

I was glad, though, to see Ferdinand Lyle return. That character is so awesomely flamboyant, yet badass. He and Ethan are my two favorites.

Speaking of Ethan – that was an interesting, and bloody development. Apparently, Daddy Talbot doesn’t see completely eye-to-eye with either his son or the law. Nice to see Hecate hanging around. She’s a definite hottie.

Sir Malcolm is, as always, a completely badass mofo. And Wes Studi’s introduction as Kaetenay was f+@~ing awesome! The scalping was brutal. It appears, however, that he is a genuine warrior against the darkness type. As Sir Malcolm was and shall be.

The scene with the Creature on the ice-trapped ship was brutal, yet poignant in its own way. Rory Kinnear continues to be amazing in his portrayal. Now that I think about it, I have to add him to my list of Ethan and Ferdinand as favorites.

Frankenstein and Jekyll – I was wondering where they were going with the casting of Jekyll, but as soon as they had Victor and Henry sitting down talking, it became clear, and clearly brilliant. It makes sense that someone from India would have that kind of prejudice against him during that time period. And that prejudice would have him be full of rage (as Victor notes that he was in the past). Very clever way to do things. Can’t wait to see where they go with it.

Finally – Dracula and Renfield!!!!

Dark Archive Vendor - Fantasiapelit Tampere

Spoiler:
Those last minutes were effin great. AMAZING buildup to a logical yet still AWESOME as HELL reveal. And Renfield! So great. So much to look forward this season!

Scarab Sages

I just hope....

Spoiler:
We get to see Renfield munching on some insects and doing a creepy laugh.

And I loved the way all those vampires backed away on their bellies when Dracula came in. That they didn't show him was pretty cool, as well. Part of me is hoping they keep that up for a bit.

Sovereign Court

I was hoping this season would spend some time with the characters apart and the conclusion was them coming back together.

spoiler:
Looks like they are not taking any breaks getting the band back together.
Love the inclusion of the new characters. PD is back! Could use more Drona Cray!

My oh my what wonderful start to a new tale of dread.

over all this episode felt quite but with something nasty simmering just out of sight, until that very end. I do love seeing Vampires back as something horrifying instead of sexy.

just chills me how they played that last scene.

Scarab Sages

Another excellent episode…

Spoiler:
I like it when the show can surprise me. At first, I thought for sure they were going to use the Dr. Sweet subplot to somehow bring in Captain Nemo for a next season story. That end shot with Sweet/Dracula and Renfield put that little notion to rest. F+@~ing awesome!

The other reason it makes me glad is that Christian Camargo has quickly become another favorite. He’s had some really good scenes, and blended in rather well, I think.

I now have to wonder, however, where Dracula ranks in the vampire scale. It didn’t seem clear to me, but I get the impression he’s not the same as whichever vampire abducted and turned Mina in the first season.

I loved the bit with Kaetenay and Sir Malcolm on the boat, then with Kaetenay and Ethan in dreamtime. The new member if Team (sorta) Good Guys seems to believe in some harsh justice, and it’s clear that Ethan very much holds that against him. I did like the way Ethan warned the old woman before the change came upon him. All those other poor bastards were toast, but she was an innocent and he sought to protect her.

It was nice to see Hecate in all her Nekkid Hell Beast glory.

I’m liking Dr. Jekyll more and more. That lab setup screamed “mad scientist”. Loved the use of his formula (or at least a version of it). I wonder if he’s used it on himself yet….

Lily and Dorian – that was some pretty f++!ed up s*&%. The scene between her and Victor was pretty cool. You can see she still has some feelings for him.

Dark Archive Vendor - Fantasiapelit Tampere

Damn damn damn!

Spoiler:
Holy s%&%! That was effing awesome reveal! In the hindsight, Sweet's fascination with movies and him being who he is kinda reminds me of Coppola's Dracula movie.

Doctor Jekyll creeps the fudge out of me. And that scene with the mixture injected was so well done and creepy in it's own right. Even so if you know what is their ultimate goal. Hrrr.

Damn this show is so good

Scarab Sages

Ouch….

Spoiler:
Now we know what happens to minions who piss off Dracula. It looked like they might have actually been eating him. That’s a nice touch. I recall some books I have where vampires from other cultures were flesh eaters.

Damn, Ethan tore those dudes up. Still, he was under a curse and an uncontrollable beast. Hecate is just an evil b%%+#.

I look forward to Dr. Seward’s further enlightenment into the dark corners of the universe and all the nasty things calling those corners home.

Renfield finally at a fly! The actor has certainly got the “creepy” part down.

Loved the scenes with the Monster. Rory Kinnear is a fantastic actor. That final scene where Vanessa recalls him as an orderly from the Sanitarium really threw me for a curve. And from the quick preview shots of next week, his first death might have something to do with her and Dracula. That might be his motivation for joining Team Murray.

Victor showing his arrogance again. Well, that never ends badly….

Henry, showing a bit of excitability. How soon will we see Jekyll?

Blood orgy. Nice.

Sovereign Court

Ethan and Hectate:

spoiler:
I loved the scene where Hecate kills the rancher and his wife. Then, points out to Ethan how she is "discriminate" when she kills and in control. That just twisted a dagger in poor Ethan's soul.

Revealing John Claire's former life as an orderly for Vanessa was a killer reveal. The Dracula thing less so, but im glad they can still surprise me.

How long until Drona Cray blood orgy? Gotta love this show!

Scarab Sages

Wow, what an incredible episode.

Spoiler:
Other than a few brief appearances by Dr. Seward, this episode was all Vanessa and Past Monster. It was great to see such excellent actors in such a bare-bones setting, with basically nothing to play off except each other. The sequence with Rory Kinnear playing against himself as both Lucifer and Dracula was extraordinarily well done. I look forward to seeing how this all turns out, especially how Vanessa's stay in the white room might have lead to the death of the Monster's human self.

Dark Archive Vendor - Fantasiapelit Tampere

Spoiler:
Amazing episode. This is how you do "bottle episodes". only one location, two actors working each other and being amazing. The Lucifer/Dracula thing was awesome! The whole shadowplay brought intangible terror to whole scene. And that laugh...and then Ms Ives out-eviled them both :D

Very interesting development. Interesting to see how this affects possible Monster/Vanessa relationship.

Emmy-worth material, top marks.

Scarab Sages

NOOOOOoooooooo.......

Spoiler:
Don't make Ethan evil! That would blow goats. Instead, that evil skank Hecate needs to meet the business end of his Wolf of God claws. Or Sir Malcolm's gun. Or Kaetenay's knife.

That inspector dude is proving to be a badass mofo. I'm liking him more and more. Hoping they keep him around.

Victor - you crazy, arrogant bastard. I love to watch you work. And Henry! So much anger.....just under the surface. Can't wait to see Mr. Hyde.

I'm hoping one of the preview ads I've seen comes true - the shot of Sir Malcolm, Ethan, and Kaetenay walking all badass into what looked like a London courtyard. Might have been the courtyard outside Sir Malcolm's house.

Dark Archive Vendor - Fantasiapelit Tampere

Spoiler:
Random Cox is great surprise! Damn I love Brian Cox every time I see him! Though I kinda giggled when he said "never drink that scottish swill again", with him being a scot.

Also, that's how you cast summon swarm! That whole scene reminded me of the Prince of Persia movie snake assassin-scene, but done hundred times better. Creepy, ominous and tension was trough the roof!

That dualism thing with Talbot and Murray was excellent.

Serum worked, I'll be damned. Hate to see what happens when Jekyll's gonna try that too himself. I can see that coming :D

Scarab Sages

My thoughts on the serum...

Spoiler:
I have a feeling that Jekyll will try it on himself, and shortly thereafter they'll discover their test subject's violent persona returned worse than ever. Then they'll have to try and destroy the test subject, which maybe will be done by the newly emerged Mr. Hyde.

Scarab Sages

Overall....

Spoiler:
They've got four different plots to resolve at the moment: Ethan & Company in America, Miss Ives/Dr. Seward/Dracula, Victor & Henry, and Lily & Dorian.

Considering they've only go four episodes remaining to this season, I get the feeling our merry band of heroes won't be getting back together either until the very end of the final episode of this season, or the premier of the next season.

Dark Archive

Man, that shadow-on-the-wall effect to suggest who the character was in the asylum sequence was the coolest thing I've seen for understated fantastic effects for a while!

Spoiler:
Specifically the bat-wings shadow for Dracula.

Sovereign Court

This show is brilliant I cant get enough!

Scarab Sages

Well, that was interesting….

Spoiler:
Goodbye Mr. Lyle! At least they didn’t kill you off. Hopefully we’ll see you in another season or two. By the way, nice name drop of Imhotep. Could lead to some…interesting….developments.

Poor Vanessa. You’ve been suckered (so to speak) by the very villainous bastard you hope to elude. I love your choice of new ally, though. So very PC.

Gee, Lily. I still think you and Dorian would be pretty decent as big bads. But you alone? With your She-Woman Man Haters Club? YAWN! I already want to slap the piss out of your little #2. Looks like Dorian may be having enough of her non-immortal badass attitude as well.

Victor, you sad sack of s#%#. Man up and quit your damned crying. Or, you know, maybe create more scientific nightmares.

Ethan at home. What an awesomely, epic finale to his family problems. I especially loved the way Sir Malcolm put a bullet in Daddy Talbot. That was a nice touch. Shame about that Scotland Yard dude. I kind liked him.

Sovereign Court

spoiler:
Looks like its heading for splitsville for Drona Crey!

The Talbots know how to host a family reunion!

Vanessa is in another "who is the fly and who is the spider?" situation.

Please bring back Lyle!!

As I was getting ready for work this morning, something hit me about last night’s episode.

Spoiler:
The new chick they introduced – the fencing chick who studies death – I have a feeling she might play more intricately into a future plotline.

For one, they used the esteemed Mr. Lyle as a way to introduce her. The esteemed Mr. Lyle and his visit to Egypt to see the tomb of Imhotep. Secondly, the chick’s study of death. I have a feeling that if they do introduce The Mummy as a future villain, that fencing chick might just be the object of his affection – the reincarnated love of his life.

That would be cool. For one, it would finally make Vanessa NOT the main focus of the villain’s plot. While I like the character, her being the focus of everything gets annoying after awhile. So a new female for the bad guy to aim his dastardly deeds at could be a nice change of pace.

And again, if I'm correct, the other good news about this is it would bring back Mr. Lyle into the story. The way they've written that character, so flamboyant and bright compared to the dour countenances of everyone else, it makes him a scene stealer every damned time.

Sovereign Court

Like the way you think AZ!

Dark Archive Vendor - Fantasiapelit Tampere

Spoiler:
I looved the little smiles Ethan and the police shared when they met and at the dinner table. "I'm famished like..." smirk smirk :)
That whole Talbot Ranch part was great. Though pity it had to end like that :( I really liked him.

THat whole collection of characters was awesome. They were pretty much all bastards, aside the lawmen. You really shoudl not feel bad for any of them but you kinda do.

Damn Dracula you nasty. Renfield is great, sniveling, pathethic being. You feel sorry for him but you hate him as well.

spoiler:
I know this gothic horror and all, but seriously the Talbot family reunion was worthy of a top notch western showdown. The morality was all over the map, as well as the understanding of exactly how dangerous the evening was going to prove.

Also, every time they introduce a new character it just expands on the story. I love how they can close one door and open another seamlessly. I am more anxious for PD than I am for GoT!

I went Googling to see if I could figure out who Ms. Catriona Hartdegen was, figuring maybe they were incorporating another literary character into the Dreadful "Wold Newton"/"League of Extraordinaries". Unfortunately, the only thing I ran across was

Spoiler:
she shares her last name with Alexander Hartdegen, the name given for H.G. Wells' The Time Traveller in the 2002 version of The Time Machine. That seems outside the bounds for this show. If there is an intended link, my only guess is maybe they're calling back to the H.G. Wells of SyFy's Warehouse 13... but that's probably a big stretch.

I hate to see Mr. Lyle go, but I find the capable Ms. Hartdegen very intriguing.

Also, enough already with Victor Frankenstein. Don't keep the good Dr. Jekyll in the background... turn him loose!

Nice linguistic detail, in my language (Dutch) Hartdegen = hart (heart) + degen (rapier). I'm sure that's no coincidence.

Yeah, first thing I did was double check the old Boris Karloff version of The Mummy to see if they borrowed her name from that movie's Imhotep target. No such luck.

Teeny update:

Spoiler:
The 2002 version of the The Time Machine was written by... John Logan. Yes, the same John Logan who created and writes Penny Dreadful. So, 1) is Ms. Hatdegen actually a time traveling historian, 2) is it just an easter egg for the fans, or 3) does Logan just like the name?

Iiiiinterestiiing....

Sure to keep this in mind. God I love the potential ways this series could go!

Scarab Sages

BOOM!!!

Spoiler:
I loved the interactions between Ethan, Kaetenay, and Sir Malcolm. Can't wait to see the three of them on the mean streets of London, taking down vamps.

The interaction between Vanessa and the Monster was cool as well. I'm glad she was able to help him, and glad that he's reunited with his family again. I don't see it lasting, however, which sucks.

Dorian was pissed at that little chick. I really thought he might kill her then and there. Then he goes and does something monumentally stupid, by helping Victor and Henry kidnap Lily. The characterization of Victor was pretty interesting - definitely misogynistic in tone, wanting to make her more of a "proper woman". Given that attitude was probably quite pervasive at the time, I'm surprised it took them this long to show it more. Still, if I were them, I'd think twice before giving her that formula.

I feel for Lily. The revelation that she lost a child was particularly saddening. When they first introduced her as Brona, I wondered where they were going with her character. She's been very well developed.

Finally - Vanessa....NOOOOOO!!!!

AAAAARRRRRGGGHHHH!!! Now I have to wait an entire week until the two-part season finale!!!!

Dark Archive Vendor - Fantasiapelit Tampere

Spoiler:
F*CK! F*CK! WE ARE IN DEEP MANURE RIGHT NOW!

Dorian sitting at the end of table was my favorite shot of this season. Table full of women and he is miserable as hell. I loved that :D And I really liked that Dorian is not happy with what's happening. Fits his character very well.

Dammit Billy Piper you are on FIRE! Damn good delivery.

Scarab Sages

Holy crapcakes on fire!!! That was glorious!!!!!

Spoiler:

So much awesomeness, it's hard to know where to begin...

The scenes between Victor and Lily were grand. I'm glad he let her go. And I loved the follow-up bits with Dorian, Lily, and the kid.

HOLY CRAP! We should have seen that Kaetenay was a werewolf. With all that talk of Ethan begin his son, what other outcome should we have expected? The meeting between the two in wolf form, amidst the slaughter and blood in the streets, was pure epic poetry.

Glad that Victor was with them at the end. It was fitting. And I really like sword chick. She's proven herself to be a badass. I only wish the creature had been there to do battle with them. That might have been a bit unfair, however.

Glad to see that Dracula survived. I can't wait to see what more they might do with him.

Lastly, sorry you had to die Vanessa. Your were certainly a hottie.

I really hope they continue on with the series. I'd really love to see the mummy brought in to this.

Dark Archive

Still loving this show. That was a hell of a fight!

Spoiler:
I was sort of hoping that Clare would take his son's body to Victor to re-animate, and that would be the impetus for him to be present for the big throw-down at the end. They kind of threw Frankenstein himself into the deep end, instead, since he's not the most useful in a fight, which, in itself, is kind of fun to see, since the others he was with were straight-up badasses.

I'm still not in love with Dorian Grey having an unrelated arc, again, this season. There's a part of me that wants to see the whole cast get together in a League of Extraordinary sort of way, creature, immortal, werewolf, etc. but that teased promise never seems to circle around into being.

Maybe that's for the best, and keeps it from turning into an Avengers movie, and the writers know what makes this work so well better than I do. :)

I can't imagine this show going on without Vanessa, and I kept waiting for him to go upstairs and her be sleeping in her bed, recovering from a deliberately non-fatal gunshot wound, administered to trick Dracula into thinking that she was dead. That would have been cheap, obviously, but I kept hoping! Still, they've left some plot threads dangling, such as Lord Hyde, and whatever becomes of Lily, so perhaps they've got some good ideas in the can for later.

Dark Archive Vendor - Fantasiapelit Tampere

Episode 8:

Spoiler:
Catriona Hartdridgen, Vampire Hunter. With that coat and reddish hair she looked like certain Elsa Bloodstone ;)

I want to thank Penny Dreadful for one thing. In a long time I have not been scared of the idea of vampires or of vampires in any fiction. Penny Dreadful made me again shiver when they appeared.

And oooh yeeah twin werewolf action baby!

Episode 9 is not yet in HBO Nordic's site so I have not yet seen the last episode of the series. Because it ends here. No fourth season for us, folks.

Scarab Sages

I think my favorite scene from the whole night was...

Spoiler:
...the shot of Kaetenay walking down the foggy London street, when you suddenly see his eyes change color and he wolfs out. To be honest, I wasn't expecting it. I thought maybe Ethan had fallen afoul of ancient Apache magic.

And, of course, now we know how he survived the rattlesnake bite.

Scarab Sages

My concern, going forward, is that I haven't seen anything to indicate the series has been renewed for a 4th season. They left some really interesting plot threads dangling, and I really would like to see the story continued. I especially would dearly love to see Mr. Lyle again, since I'm betting his reappearance on the show would presage a visit from a certain Egyptian monster.

There will not be a fourth season. Read it here. Sad news all around.

I will forgive them if they do a one off movie detailing Ferdinand Lyle's epic battle against Imhotep the Mummy down in Egypt.

And now I have seen the last episode. What a rollercoaster.

Spoiler:
I think this is one of the WEAKEST endings a series could have. Logan wanted to end the series, okay, but you could do it better and less cliched. For Pete's sake this has the same ending as X-MEN 3. "You have to kill me so I can't destroy the world" Oh my god I hate that. I might be alone with this but still. One of the best female characters dies like that is kind of annoying. And Kaetaney-thing went disturbingly more "Dances with Wolves" than I inital thought. Also the whole thing with Jekyll was in the end, completely pointless. This just annoys me as you we know that all of this is NOT gonna continue. What happened to Dracula? What happened to Renfield, Jekyll, Brona- this series ending leaves so much open it's horrible.

But the good stuff: The battle with Dracula's forces was cool and it involved lots of moving and climbing and cool stuff. Especially from Catriona, she was amazing. I had hoped that the battle with Dracula itself would also be cool, but he just smacked them around for a while. I wanted Ethan to tear him apart g%! d%&mit :D I also liked what happened with Dorian, mainly because that kinda fits his character. And Caliban's scenes in all were, once again, some of the best stuff in the series.

But as a ending to the series, this was just a mess. I still hope that Logan might turn his stance and continue the series some day but as for now, what a disappointing ending to a great series. Penny Dreadful will still remain as one of the finest pieces of television entertainment of the modern era.
