Advice

We have a 8th level fighter in our group w/no archetype. He's a very well rounded guy in feats & attributes, making him a modest switch hitter. Envy is starting to arise (and if it was me it would be jealousy) at the damage the rogues and barbarian dishes out. I made a suggestion to retrain the Run feat into Improved Critical and buy a strength belt and Gloves of Dueling. He's specialized in the longsword. Is this capable to use two handed? If so we can squeeze some more damage from power attacking. I can't think of what else to tell him to try for more damage with wwhat he has for feats.
Weapon focus, weapon specialization long sword, stand still, run, combat reflexes, power attack, cleave, point blank shot, precise shot, rapid shot & vital strike. All that I can remember. I think Run needs to go & maybe combat reflex & stand still, I can't recall those feats ever coming of use for him so far. Any suggestions?

The other thing is that he has a kind of semi-cursed set of Archery bracers that he can't remove, nor would he want to. These allow him to imitate pulling on an imaginary bow, and a translucent longbow appears with a ghostly force damage arrow nocked. It does good damage & allows his strength too, but it if shoots the same target with it, each additional shot does another cumulative 1d6 damage to enemy and to him but in nonlethal damage. Is there anything we can do besides placing a healer behind him to offset this nonlethal damage or what can we do to maximize its damage potential?

I would consider a few things, first being upgrading the size of the weapon. He can wield a LARGE long sword.

1. Inappropriately Sized Weapons:
A creature can’t make optimum use of a weapon that isn’t properly sized for it. A cumulative –2 penalty applies on attack rolls for each size category of difference between the size of its intended wielder and the size of its actual wielder. If the creature isn’t proficient with the weapon, a –4 nonproficiency penalty also applies.

2 If a one-handed weapon is wielded with two hands during melee combat, add 1-1/2 times the character's Strength bonus to damage rolls.

3 All this info can be found via:

So for a small penalty -2 and holding it in both hands, he could increase his damage quite a bit. Not only increasing the damage via str bonus but also via Power attack.

As far as feats, you just have to know what it is you want to do. He is almost half and half melee and ranged.
Ranged-
He could go pure ranged, grabbing Deadeye and Manyshot which would increase his damage substantially for ranged.
Melee-
Greater Weapon Focus and Improved Initative are great. Another feat worth noting is Precise Strike which adds another 1d6 against a flat footed target.
Run seems like a wasted feat I agree, while standstill and combat reflexes feels more like a tank mechanic. I would just ask what it is he wants.

To answer the nonlethal question its hard to say. Pots?

If it was me I'd retrain Run for Improved Critical, and retrain Stand Still for Exotic Weapon Elven Curved Blade and retrain my specialization into that weapon. 1d10 and 15-20 threat range would up his potential damage a lot.

We now have a Wizard in the party who can cast Enlarge and Haste on him as well. Buffs would work when we are able, but still leave the fact he isn't happy being underpowered when compared to the Barbarian and especially myself.

I'm a 1-trick pony though and gave up quite a bit to do what I do. 1/2 orc Scout/Skulking Slayer with Bludgeoner/Sap Adept/Sap Master and a huge strength score with an Earth Breaker & Power Attack/Furious Focus.

I'm wondering if there is a spell we can cast on him to change his "type" from Human(oid), to something immune to Nonlethal damage... if we can eliminate or suppress it somewhat he could focus on ranged damage more often.

Honestly, I dont know the rules for removing certain aspects of an item, but the DM can just set a price to have the magical portion that deals nonlethal damage removed. Dont make it complicated, set a gold price, make it happen. If something in the game is unfun fix it and move on.

Can Vital Strike be used with the Cleave feat?

EDIT: Never mind about Vital Strike, I found out that it doesn't work with cleave.

I'm thinking of suggesting to him Improved Critical and Cleaving Finish so far.
