Does Monkey Moves feat grant climb and crawl speeds?

Rules Questions

Scarab Sages

This is a question for the developers.

The feat Monkey Moves states "You can also can climb and crawl at half your speed." It also states "...you retain your Dexterity bonus to AC while climbing."

I have taken this to mean the character literally gains both climb and crawl speeds (not enhancements) equal to one-half their base movement. Is this correct?

The Climb skill states "A creature with a climb speed has a +8 racial bonus on all Climb checks. The creature must make a Climb check to climb any wall or slope with a DC higher than 0, but it can always choose to take 10, even if rushed or threatened while climbing. If a creature with a climb speed chooses an accelerated climb, it moves at double its climb speed (or at its land speed, whichever is slower) and makes a single Climb check at a –5 penalty. Such a creature retains its Dexterity bonus to Armor Class (if any) while climbing, and opponents get no special bonus to their attacks against it. It cannot, however, use the run action while climbing."

Just looking for clarification on this. Am I correct in my assumption that a character with this feat gains both climb and crawl speeds, or are they (the character) merely just faster at climbing and crawling? Thanks in advance.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

No, Normally when climbing something you move at 1/4th speed, but you can move at 1/2 speed by taking a -5 penalty to the climb check. You also normally can move 5 feet by crawling while prone.

Monkey Moves just lets you climb at 1/2 speed without penalty and crawl at 1/2 speed instead of just 5 feet while prone.

Concur. You are better at climbing and crawling, but you do not gain a climb speed. And as far as I know, there is no such thing as a crawl speed.

Abilities that grant a climb speed are very explicit about it.

If one of the developers could respond with a clarification I would greatly appreciate it.

How many years are you willing to wait?

Because honestly many critical issues in debate are awaiting responses from 2009 (Overrun is just one.)

Now if you need a reply, and you are happy with an employee who is an excellent GM and knows the rules well but isn't someone who's job is to answer these inquiries. You can go to the "Ask James Jacobs" thread.

No need for dev input, just use the rule of thumb that Feats do what they say they do, and not more or less. The feat says you can move at 1/2 speed while climbing and crawling. Also says that you keep your Dex to AC when climbing and crawling. It does not say it grants you a climb speed, nor does it state that you get all the other benefits of a climb speed.

If it did give a climb speed it would need to give +8 climb and that would most definitely spelled out if so.

why do you need clarification? There is no climb speed mentioned, there is no +8 to climb which would infer a climb speed (but not mandate one as it could simply be a flat bonus to the check)
To think it gives you a climb speed is (and I exaggerate for effect) like asking whether skill focus: fly gives you a fly speed.
