Anyone know of a super-simple chat program for two people on a LAN?

Technology

So, me and my partner have our computers in different rooms of the apartment, and both spend most of our time in front of them. It'd be really nice to have a quick and simple messenger system of some kind, not unlike the old Net Send protocol which unfortunately doesn't seem to work very well on windows 7/8.

Any ideas? Not looking for something as complex as msn or icq or anything - the simpler the better, and the less it gets in the way the better.

Thanks a lot for any ideas :)

You could get up and go talk to them.

Paizo Employee Developer

That's not very helpful.

I've never tried it, but maybe (FOSS) LAN Messenger?

That's the current makeshift solution, but far too much work ;)

Thanks, I'll test that! :3

Two cans and a string?

Or, more seriously, maybe keep an eye out for two used intercom phones.

You want something real easy? Use an AOL client. It's what we use at work to communicate between co-workers and supervisors. Assuming both computers have internet access, there really isn't anything easier. It's also platform independent, it doesn't matter whether you're using Mac/Windows, or a smartphone. There are even a ton of aol clients that work using Linux.

It even gives you the option of voice and video if you want, or just text chat. You can set up for audio alerts when messages come in or leave that silent.

I disagree, I'm just thinking outside the box.

Like, if someone came on here asking "is there any elaborate contraption I can invent that will allow me to change the channel on the TV all the way across the room." And my advice is "get up off the couch and get the remote."

*gasp*

an IRC chat maybe? the clients are usually free and you can just PM each other back and forth or create a private room.

We use RealPopup LAN chat for Android, it works perfectly in WiFi network without Internet connection. The app can be found in Google play, it's free. Windows version is supported.

Just do what we do at work... use an AIM client. It doesn't get any easier than that.

If you're both using Macs.. use IMessage with Bonjour.
