Horizon Walker Ranger

Rules Questions

Does the animal companion gained from a Ranger's Hunter's Bond gain the terrain mastery and dominance from Horizon Walker?

Hunter's bond states that "A ranger's animal companion shares his favored enemy and favored terrain bonuses." Terrain mastery states, "...a horizon walker selects a favored terrain to master." I read this to mean that you are just improving upon a favored terrain.

I am tempted to say that they should gain it but i think that RAW they don't.

Favored Terrain

At 1st level, a horizon walker may select a favored terrain from the ranger favored terrains table. This works exactly like the ranger favored terrain ability. The horizon walker gains an additional favored terrain at 2nd, 4th, 5th, 7th, 8th and 10th level, and he can increase the bonus from an existing favored terrain as described in the ranger ability. If the horizon walker has abilities from other classes that only work in a favored terrain (such as a ranger’s camouflage and hide in plain sight abilities), those abilities work in favored terrains selected as a horizon walker.

Animal Companion gains the favored terrain of the Ranger. Horizon walker favored terrain explicitly stacks with any other favored terrain. The animal companion would gain the benefit of it.

Currently my GM is ruling no on this. He wants a Paizo's rule person to chime in on the topic before he'll change his stance. No worries though, I stand by my GMs ruling as a good player :D

Just to manage your expectations, there is a very very tiny slim chance of that happening.

I know. Others support my opinion which is pretty cool. I believe that the animal companion should get the bonus. For now I am content to play as my GM states it.

Your GM should be thankful you went into Horizon Walker with a Ranger and give you Animal Companion bonus even if it wasn't supported by the rules. Hroizon Walker from a Rogue would make him stop worrying about a minor bonus to a companion.

Nope. Terrain mastery and dominance are separate class features from favored terrain. Animal companions only share favored terrain and favored enemy.

Do'h I misread the same text. Animals Companions get the Favored Terrian Bonus of terrains selected by Horizon Walker, but not the mastery/dominance.

I see your point. I guess I was just seeing the mastery and dominance as advancing the favored terrains.

This makes me wonder though does the chosen favored terrain for mastery have to be a favored terrain you have already picked? I would think yes but it doesn't explicitly state it.

This is the first time I have really looked at Horizon Walker so I had not considered it with other classes. A Horizon Walker/Rogue sounds AMAZING though!

Yeah, it gets pretty nuts with the Terrain Mastery (no relation) rogue talent and the Extra Rogue Talent feat. You can end up with a *lot* of terrains on your list and some serious bonuses.

If you're allergic to rogue, just dip 2 levels to get the rogue talent class feature and spam the feat instead.

Sadly, when I first saw this thread, my brain turned it into Horizon Walker Texas Ranger.

There are times the character this thread is for feels that way.

Did someone call?

Anyways my opinion of it is thusly,

Horizon Walker, Terrain Dominance wrote:
When dealing with creatures native to that terrain, the horizon walker treats his favored terrain bonus for that terrain as a favored enemy bonus (as the ranger class feature) against those creatures. This bonus overlaps (does not stack with) bonuses gained when fighting a favored enemy.
Hunter's Bond wrote:

So basically it could be read that since I, the Horizon Walker Ranger, treat my favored terrain bonus as a Favored Enemy bonus, I could then share my "Favored Enemy Bonus" with my Animal Companion.
