Final Fantasy IX was my favorite of the series because of the incredible storyline. In fact, as I was playing through it recently, I figured that the basic plot could be stripped down to make an incredible Pathfinder Campaign that still left room for creative freedom. So here it is, a videogame redone with pathfinder rules. I'd really like to have a few players that have never played FFIX before so that there's a bit more surprise and chance for the story to take off in a random direction.
For Characters, there are some restrictions, but I tried to strip it down to allow as much freedom as possible. I need four players, as the story progresses, four more characters are introduced, but we can decide whether they get new players or existing players when that time comes. Here are the starting Four:
1: The charming Thief. Does not have to be a rogue, but does have to fit the band of thieves background. Must appear to be a Human with a tail, but gets the catfolk racial build.
2:The Black Mage Child. Must be an offensive spellcaster. The Black mage race for him is essentially a gnome, but with a few tweaks.
3: The Princess. Must be a Good Human with a relatively noncombatant class (i.e. oracle, alchemist, etc.).
4: The Knight. Class must make some sense for a knight. Must be a medium humanoid.
I look forward to seeing whether anyone wants to play and hearing good ideas for the characters! More info upon request btw.

+1 for FF IX being one of the better story arc games. I enjoyed FF 8 due to the monster "leveling" up as you do to be an interesting mechanic to the game. My favorite of all time if FF 3, great story and characters.
I will keep an eye on this thread and may apply if you need another warm body to make the game happen. Good luck to ya :)

I never played any of the titles after VII, which I loved. I would be down for this.
If your open to 3rd party stuff, there is a Knight class that seems ok. I really like the Aegis in the Psionic stuff, doesn't get powers gets a protective suit and is full BAB and 1d10 HD so could make a good knight as well.

I am interested! My buddy (Acre) is also interested. We were just talking about this concept for a tabletop version of this same thing. Mark us both down please! When do you need more information/character info from us? We are both traveling and will be back to "normal" in about 3 days.
**Edit**
I would love to play the thief character (Rogue with acrobat archetype, human based)
Acre mentioned that when you introduce the Freya character, he would like to play the dragoon...
**Second Edit**
I am posting from Korea currently. Acre and I are sitting in a business meeting. I had to post as soon as we saw this. Side note, I have played many final fantasy games, but have never played FF IX... Acre has played before.

I don't intend to activate the campaign for another few weeks, but I'd really love to see some of the characters come together! Please throw some ideas whenever you have time!
My initial design was for four players, as the original is designed to be played with as many at one time, and each player gains control of one alternate character.

I am working on a rogue (acrobat) character to submit for the charming thief. I am going to assume a 20 point build, and I can adjust accordingly should you decide to do something different. Starting gold is less important, just a minor detail. If there is any other details you would like for us to take into account when we build our characters, please let us know!
Ace Matthews |
Yes! 20pt buy.
there are a couple of differences between gnomes and mages though: mages take a -2 to wisdom instead of str. also, they must take the pyromaniac alternate racial trait. Black mages also get a +2 on will saves vs fear and a -2 on saves vs compulsion effects.
For the Rogue, just remember to build him like a catfolk! there is a reason he's different from most humans...

Similar to Ashe above, I threw together this knight character. A human fighter (Armor Master), level 1, using 20 point buy and average starting gold. The theme an attempt to mimic the gullibility of Steiner using the low will save of a fighter plus an additional -1 to wisdom on the ability score.
Anyway, this is just a thought.

Ace, have you heard of the Final Fantasy D6 system? I think it would be better to run this game in. It is based off the Final Fantasy D20 system....which is based off of Pathfinder.
I'll take a look at it. I do want this to be a pathfinder game, even if that makes it deviate from the story. Creative freedom is better than just a strong story alone in my opinion :D Thanks for the heads up!
Ace Matthews |
@Ashe - I'm not familiar with the psionic stuff... but I'll look it over, it could be fun. Also, in the spirit of FFIX, Names are optional, save the princess, who gets renamed anyway.
@Augustus - That is an awesome PF version of ol' rusty. I like it!
Like I said I'm looking for a mix of people who know the game and those who don't. These are great ideas!

This is my (Papasteve) submission for the charming thief. I have much more detail of his backstory bubbling around in my head, but not enough time yet to put it in writing.
I built him with the Catfolk race, however his appearance is fully human, with the exception of the feline tail. The abilities of the catfolk race seemed to fit in perfectly with what I have read of the thief character (I haven't played before). I wanted to make a character that was as true to the video game version as possible, but still have the chance to see where he goes in role playing. Please let me know if you see something you think I should change!

I added the changes related to race, though it is unfinished, waiting for some advise or new concept.I use sorcerer as a base, because they are "born" with their magical powers, but with the arcana bloodline to be able, a high levels though, to double-cast. Another racial change I see apropiate its the hate to goblinoids.
This is JuanAdriel, btw.
Ace Matthews |
Yeah I figure I need to adjust that a bit more, specifically the hate for goblinoids, but I am not quite sure how yet.
The good news: I will definitely be running the campaign soon-ish.
The bad news: This will be my first homebrew and my first time online GMing. some patience required ;P Also, I work at a camp for the next six weeks so the amount that I am able to do during that time will vary, and I still have quite a bit to do before I can unveil this thing.

Hey-o! Along the same lines as Vivi the Black's post above, I went through the Knight character concept and made a few additional changes to my PF attempt at replicating Steiner (toon name= Augustus Eldridge).
Using the drawback system from Ultimate Campaign, the Attachment Drawback was added, specifically to mimic Steiner's loyalty to Garnet and his unyielding protection of her. Because of the use of this drawback, the ability to access a third trait was added (per Ultimate Campaign). Along with the addition of this third trait, the previously selected traits were reworked a bit in order to add diplomacy as a class skill and bump up its ranks a bit.
Hopefully this isn't a terrible build for Steiner :)

It's all good on my end, I'll stay with it till the game is complete even if there are big lag times sometimes. The joy of playing a FF story+perhaps the opportunity to some day help smash Kujas face in with a cool summon is too good an opportunity to pass up.

Take a look at the race creation, here at the PRD, or maybe you will like some other race in the Advanced Race Guide, not just for Vivi, but for the frog-king, Amarant, etc. (Vanaras, the monkey like, where too a good option for Zidane, though the Nimbus build with the lady-charming trait is really cool.)
Ace Matthews |
@Phiktional- If there is enough interest to cover the four added characters with their own players, we will increase to eight players as the new guys are introduced. That might take quite some time though.
@juan- Thanks for the ideas, I should have some downtime near the end of this week I think so I'll see about looking over them.
Luna Starlight |
I am still working on fleshing out a bit more of a backstory, but I did update my skill selections. I removed a point from climb and put it into perform (act).
Very much looking forward to seeing where this could go. It looks like we have a submission for each character slot, with perhaps some fleshing out of the princess and the mage...
If there is anything I can do to help, speak up!
Ace Matthews |
Thanks for all the love on this guys, Once I get my phone repaired so that I have a reliable wifi hotspot I will work on opening a Legitimate recruitment thread. I still wouldn't mind seeing everyone's ideas for characters both close and far from the originals, though I really like what I've seen thus far. Be on the lookout!
Luna Starlight |
Ace - You can consider this my submission for the thief character. I am not able to peruse the recruitment threads very often (I felt lucky I found your post when I did!) so if you decide to start a different thread, please count me as interested. I assumed this was the recruitment thread, so if you do start a different one, and chose me to play the thief character, please let me know via PM. I will continue to monitor this thread for now!
Luna Starlight |
I am still here, though I am not positive at this point if I will be able to commit to playing in another game (currently have 3 characters active, this would be a 4th). I will start checking this thread more often, but if there is someone else interested in playing the thief character, I would definitely defer. (they can feel free to use what I think is an awesome build I made as well)
