Next preview up, with a look ahead at Neil Spicer's latest collection of characters, NAUTICAL HEROES!

So, having never picked up one of these, how exactly does it work? Are they just pre-genned level 1 characters with backgrounds or does the collection also include their advancement at various levels? I ask because while the former is interesting the latter becomes much more useful as a GM.

They're pre-genned 1st level characters, but I always make sure to include a paragraph of advancement notes taking them up to 4th level (which is enough to adventure through the first chapter of just about any AP). After that, I leave it to individual players to decide on how they want to customize and advance the character thereafter. And the notes I include aren't super-detailed. They're just what choices they might make if they multiclass, how they spend their skill points, what feat choices they make and any feat chains they're generally pursuing, what spells they select as they advance, as well as any equipment or magic items they might seek out once they've accumulated a bit of wealth.

It looks like a powerful enemy, though...are "infected" creatures turned into full power qomoks or do they become a sort of spawn? Either way I can see possibilities for a "Thing Factory"....

"Thing-spawn" are indeed turned into full power, free-willed qomoks, so there's definitely a possibility for a "Thing Factory." However, qomoks do not always work well together, as evidenced by this excerpt:

Qomoks have little regard for organic life, seeing living creatures merely as prey and conveniences by which they can gain newer, more versatile forms. ... Qomoks have only slightly more regard for their own kind, including their own infection-spawned offspring. Although they will cooperate with one another when they share a common enemy or goal, qomoks only do so if the association serves their personal need for assimilation and survival.

In fact, a qomok will often attack another qomok in order to deflect attention away from itself or to preserve its cover.

Check out Mythic Monsters: Aliens for more insight into these iconic alien horrors. :-)

Qomok are behaving exactly like Things from the movie then. I always found the Thing fascinating as a sort of anti-Borg. They are completely and absolutely individualist, even body parts can autonomy as soon as they are separated from the whole. They make you like them because they want to make more of themselves but as soon as you're not directly them you are just another thing outside of them that doesn't matter.

With this in mind I hope the qomoks have some sort of spawn ability related to dismemberment and vorpal weapons.

They do ... sort of. Qomoks split apart when hit with fire, acid, or electrical attacks that drop them to a certain hit point total. And, just like in the movies, smaller qomok "pieces" are noticeably less intelligent than full-grown qomoks.

I've been slacking on the previews (though not on the work - Ultimate War continues to grow unabated), but here's a second quick teaser for a product that is getting very close now!

Good news! Is the plan still to release it in time for Gencon?

And good luck with the other books and PDFs too.

Thanks! As for Ultimate War, ASK AND YE SHALL RECEIVE PREVIEWS!

I just looked, and it sounds awesome! And yet another book in the series? [i]Ultimate Armies{/i]? Now I'm looking forward to THAT one too!

I'll just add my vote for an Ultimate Armies book. :)

How about magic in mass combats? Will there be anything to cover units of magic users (perhaps covered with somekind of range attack bonus, but a sucky melee score) or will magic users be restricted to onesy twosy since they should be quite rare on the battlefield. Will there be anything that covers mixed combat units? How small of a scale will units be able to get, epecially with attrition (platoon, squad, last man standing)?

The one thing I miss from the old days of preinternet was being able to thumb through books on shelves because there was no digital distribution. That way, I could answer my own questions by checking out the book once it is released...
