Visiting Seattle next month, looking for cool places to visit!

Off-Topic Discussions

Hi!

A friend and I are flying to Seattle next month for a week and are looking for cool places to visit. I'm likely going to be moving out there next May after grad school so I have to take a day to do boring adult stuff.

We're both into board games, RP events, online MMOs, and basically anything that is at GenCon every year (we both have gone for the last 6 years straight).

So far, we're definitely going to AFK Tavern, Pike's Place, and Kerry Park!

Got any other cool hangouts for visiting gamers to check out?

The EMP Sci-fi museum is still running it's Fantasy: Worlds of Myth exhibit. A bit pricy but worth it.

EMP.

Also I HIGHLY recommend a two stop in Fremont. 1st hit the Fremont troll because it's a troll and you are a gamer. Then skip over to Paseo and treat your taste buds to the best Cuban sandwich in Seattle. Do not be afraid of the lines, it is well worth it.

Paseo

If you are at Pikes Place make sure to hit the comic store and magic shop downstairs. Then head down towards the water, to see the Ye'ol Curiosity shop's mummy and two headed pig. Also right near the shop is the great wheel. If the weather is nice it's a cool way to see the city.

If you like beer like I do then tour Ballard. They have a staggering amount of micro breweries. I say staggering because if you hit half the pubs you will be staggering around.

Card Kingdom is also in Ballard, you can play magic the gathering and other games while working off that buzz. It's one of the better game stores in Seattle.

If you are here for a week you should get out an see some of the abundant nature in the Pac NW. So many great places to hike and Stevens pass is so close. But for a gamer I think Fort Casey on Whidbey Island might be more up your alley. You get to take a ferry boat over to the island and the park is just geektastic.

Ft Casey

Have fun!

Have a great time, I hope the weather is nice for you.

About 45 minutes out of Seattle in the realm of Stillwater is a medieval village. In the summer they have events each weekend from 12:00 to 5:00. I recommend eating at the Bors Hede while you are there as the food is very authentic and very good.

@MD, Thanks for all the great ideas!

The EMP museum looks freaking amazing. I love museums and that one is just tops.

I learned yesterday the guy I'm going with doesn't drink and I've been sober for a bit; however, since I plan on moving out there in a year it sounds like a great place to visit and take friends!

CardKingdom is going to make or break me haha. I love MTG so so much. Spent more on MTG than my car, which also says something about the quality of my car. I had no idea they were there. I'm used to smaller local shops around here.

Looks like I have a fun itinerary to plan out over the next two weeks. :-)

Fremont Troll

It's one of those strange curiosities you find occasionally. If you're travels bring you nearby it's worth carving out the extra 10-20 minutes to stop and appreciate.

In the 90's Wizards of the Coast purchased a massive space on the Ave in Seattle that was a meca for gaming. They had a large tables were people played MtG and RPG's all times of day or night. The décor has castle like walls with several statues of dragons and aventurers along with murals and cool lighting. The upstairs had a large arcade with a networked MechWarrior seated game stations.

This is the only pic I could find online. This was the lobby as you entered.

WoC lobby

It was crazy and unlike anything I've ever seen before or since. They obviously closed after a few years since gamers in general are not big spenders and the lease & staff needed to maintain that space had to be through the roof.

Welcome to Seattle Brown Dog!

Other misc. geekery in Seattle:

Museum of Flight: I'm not a plane geek, but the WWI wing won me over—pilot weapons (e.g., pistol, grappling hook, HALF-BRICK!), writing samples from pilots with varying degrees of oxygen deprivation, and horrifyingly fragile fabric-and-wood planes. And now they have a trainer shuttle! I hear the flight simulator is rad, but haven't tried it.

Shakespeare in the park: There are two different SitP companies here, Greenstage and Wooden O, so you should have a fair range of choice, depending on your dates and preferred plays

Check out LTD Art Gallery for some super geeky artwork.

Raygun Lounge has a great Thursday geek trivia night.

I almost forgot Puzzle Break! If you're a fan of puzzle hunts like DASH, you should really try this—you're locked into a room with 1 hr to figure out the clues that will let you escape. It goes better with a bigger group (the success rate with a full team is 20%), but I think they sometimes combine smaller groups to get up to critical mass, so you can try for that option.

That sounds awesome the next time I get out to Seattle I will definitely be looking at doing this.

When I was in Seattle for Paizocon last year, I really enjoyed the Underground Tour - good insight into the development of the city.

Oh puzzles! I love puzzles, especially challenging ones. Pandemic is probably my favorite board game because of how much I've lost at it.

I'm definitely interested in doing something like the Underground Tour. I like that I can call two hours in advance for tickets, so it can be a spur of the moment thing.

Also, found parking map which is just awesome! I'm also not a huge fan of driving so if I can manage to rent a car, park all day, and walk around that'd be ideal

Side note, thank you all so very much for putting links in your replies. Little conveniences make me happy.

check out the fish market your jerk. The one that is famous for the flying fish and inspiring lazy workers like myself. Pike's i think
