unholy mother of necromancy, batman!

Speaking of, there are plenty of necromancy blasts. Necromancers almost make better blasters than they do minion-creators.

I've been wanting to make an Inflicter cleric for a while now, but I've never had the chance. I figure at low levels you take Selective Channel and negative energy nova until you can get the feats to make Inflict powerful. Combat Casting, maybe Reach Spell or a few other choice metamagics. Once you start getting the Mass Inflicts, you're really onto something.

Best part? You can prepare utility spells in those slots and convert them to Inflictions as needed, while an evocation wizard actually has to load up his spell slots with his blasts. Sure, you can't metamagic on the fly, but it's a small price to pay.

Aren't Inflict spells pretty much inferior though? Not only are you throwing a Reach metamagic on them to do it at range but if you miss you lose the charge and if you hit then they get a save for half. Most Arcane ray spells that hit on touch AC don't get a save for half dmg.

Or am I missing something here?

Inflicts are indeed problematic entities. However they are much harder to guard agianst.. (no elemental resistance to it for instantance but it's also still energy so no DR. As far as I'm aware.)
The biggest weakness is the range, spell level and damage cap. The cap and range are easy to fix.. THe spell levels for later stuff suck. hard. no way about that..

but mass effect can hit a lot of people at once. (granted only once per spell).

So it's by no means amazing.. but if you specialize in it, with the various things that allow metamagic without spell raising? Well you can get something down right servicable.

I had a lot of fun with blade adept-witch archetypes in an arcanist (gm let it work, just by making my black blade the familar). All the inflict stabs and such.

THe higher level damaging inf lict and mass inflicts are very weirdly spell leveled to me though.. if it was 3 or 4 for mass it would be more worthwhile to me.

I meant just the usual suspects-- metamagic feats and Spell Focus (necromancy). I don't know of any feats specific to Inflict spells.

I also haven't ever really optimized a blaster, so I'm not sure which specific metamagic feats you'd go with, but Reach, Heighten, Empower, and Maximize all seem likely candidates if you can minimize the spell level bloat.

Inflict may not be the best option in terms of damage-to-spell-slot ratio, but the fact that a cleric doesn't actually have to memorize any helps. You can spend your spell slots on things to debilitate a target's Will save, for example.

But can the cleric add metamagic to a spontaneously cast cure or inflict spell?

Yes, but casting it becomes a full-round action like a sorcerer

Inflict spells and negative energy channelling are generally terrible, you will never make them deal sufficient damage to be relevant. There are however a few ways of improving them.

Dazing Spell can turn Mass Inflict Light wounds into powerful clerical pin point control. The Lunar Oracle revelation that adds a Confusion rider onto inflict does much the same thing and the DC on the confusion effect scales with your level. The alternative negative energy channel to daze is also potent but is only available to Clerics and requires you to tank various stats to maximise your charisma.
