Unarmed Monk Build

Advice

Hey Everybody!

Sorry just feeling silly.

Anyway what I looking into is a viable unarmed monk build.

Criteria are as follows:

1.) 20 pb.

2.) Core races.

3.) Single class Monk. Archetypes are fine.

4.) Viable from level one, so no guided/agile weapon shenanigans unless the build is fine without it from the start.

5.) At least 15+level AC and 20+Level AC preferred.

6.) Passable saves.

7.) An average of at least 80% of a 20 pb moderately optimized two handed martials DPR.

8.) Unarmed strike user, no weapons/natural attacks.

Skills are not that important to me for this build and I do not want a maneuver build.

If anyone has any ideas I would appreciate any input. I have tried this and have some ideas but would like to see what others can come up with.

My thanks.

Well, I always like the idea of sohei.

There are two main draws to this archetype- simplified defense and amazing offense.

For simplified defense, this comes from the fact that you can wear light armor and still flurry. You do not get your monk bonus AC though....but early on, you won't need it, and you are better off without it. You could easily go for a strength build that has little to almost no wisdom with this without suffering too much. After that, just grab that +x chainshirt. Your neck slot won't be open for an amulet of natural armor...but you could easily just go Qinggong to trade something useless (you do still have high jump) in order to get barkskin to replace that.

Admittedly, a high level standard monk might beat you in AC, since they can grab bracers of armor and such....but you will still be fine. You are as good as anyone else in light armor (the character I originally made as a sohei was a tiefling with armor of the pit for an extra +2 AC though....).

Next, the sohei's offense is amazing since they have many ways to boost their attack and damage. First, they receive weapon training that is fairly similar to a fighter's (+1 at level 6, +3 at level 18). And since it is actually called 'weapon training', you qualify for gloves of dueling after level 6 (giving you a +2 to the weapon training bonus). Finally, since you can wear light armor, you can grab the brawling property (another untyped +2). Note: the cost for a +1 Brawling Chainshirt is fairly much the same as a +1 Amulet of Mighty fists (despite the fact that you get twice the bonus on attacks, and still get +1 AC).

All together, this means that you +7 to attack and damage that other monks will never see, all on a character that can more easily survive early on with a strength focus. The only downsides I see (besides the lower potential AC) is that you trade away stunning fist...which means that the beauty of dragon style feats are a bit of a far off dream......

Traits?

Is multi-classing allowed? Or at least short dips? Or no?

Shadow Lodge

Sohei is probably the strongest offensively, though if you prefer the unarmoured types [and don't want to be sohei, since its still a strong archetype without flurrying in light armor], Drunken Master is a nice way to stack extra damage on, or you could be a Martial Artist for Fighter feats, an in-class attack bonus, and no DR problems ever. Dragon Style feat chain is something that you should pursue ASAP, since the bonus damage is really helpful, and if you aren't a Martial Artist, you should probably have Qinggong because you don't give up anything.

Is a build that relies on a wand of true strike a viable build? 750 gp is within 1st level means.

I would like to recommend the Martial Artist archetype. Not stuck with a lawful alignment removes table variation, flurrying at full AB without yet penalty is also nice as is auto DR bypass, and it swaps of a lot of redundant features. I'll post a build later too.

Human, Racial Heritage[Gnome], Bewildering Koan. You get to swift action distract a foe for 1 ki with a Bluff check and they either lose their next turn or you get +2 damage on all your attacks for 1 turn (your choice). You could also do this with either Half-Elf or Half-Orc.
