Hi,
I'm trying to create my first character and cannot figure out the correct number of spells.
The book says on page 29 - 'Pick a number of spells from this page equal to 3 + INT'.
Ok, so my INT is 17 (without modifier). So, does that mean I get 20 spells?? From my AD&D days, this seems like a ridiculously huge number for a lvl1 character.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Well, it's not "int bonus". The word "bonus" can be confusing. The propper wording is "3 + Int modifier". When you talk about "Ability modifier" you mean (Ability Score -10)/2 and round down. So in your case your Int modifier is 3. You pick 6 level 1 spells.
Ability Score and Ability Modifier is often differentiate with caps and not caps: What I mean is Ex. Your INT is 17 but your Int is 3. Your STR is 10 but your Str is 0.
And I do belive: If you start with any "modifiers" to INT (Ex. racial mod) you add them as well. If you have 19 INT with racial modifier you start with 7 level 1 spells.
