Maps for Playing RotRL Online

Rise of the Runelords

I bought the Rise of the Runelords Anniversary Edition shortly after it came out, and after three attempts to get a live space group together to play it, I've decided to try and host it through Maptool or another similar program. The only problem is, I can't get maps without the numbers and such all over them, and going through and personally scanning/editing every map in the game so I can use it for encounters and such seems like far more work than I want to put into this. What I'm wondering is if there's a way for me to get maps and such for RotRL without information on them, that I can use with a virtual tabletop program. Thank you for reading, and I hope anyone can help me with this.

I've never used it, but it sounds like you might get use out of this. Having said that, I'm pretty clueless about stuff like this, so there may be issues with getting it to do what you need.

Looks like its had mixed reviews, so asking the community in the product thread about its strengths and weaknesses would probably be wise. I saw one comment that suggested it didn't work well with roll20, which I presume is similar to maptool.

Liberty's Edge

I downloaded a peogram called NitroReader. It rips all of the images out of a PDF. All maps have all of the identifying information removed (room numbers, stair arrows, etc).

Count me among those who purchased the Interactive Maps for use in Roll20 and was sorely disappointed. They are just too low-res.

Some people have reported better luck with the maps in the PDF of the AE AP, but I only have the hard copy, so I can't confirm.

That being said, there's a lot of maps in the Community Created thread, and you can find others via Google Image search. (I just found a great one for the Swallowtail Festival the other night. Of course, we're already in book 4, but there's a chance I may need a map of that area again so it's not a complete waste.)

I'll second the maps in the PDF being better than the ones in the Interactive Maps. I'm running this campaign on roll20, and found that just copying the map from the pdf for each encounter works fine, none of the room numbers or stair arrows get copied with the image. It sometimes takes some finessing to make the map fit the grid that roll20 provides though, and sometimes it just doesn't work at all. Luckily, you can always just turn that grid off and use the one on the map.

This is not exactly an answer to your question, but perhaps it is a workable alternative. You could always use the high res maps several of us have crafted for the adventure. They can be found on page 19 of the Community Created sticky thread at the top of this forum.

I would have to agree with Mystic. There's several great maps done here by the community. If you have access to it though, Photoshop (or a similar program) can do wonders for the resolution if you prefer to do the maps. Everyone of my maps I use for Roll20 I've touched with Photoshop look pretty good. You just have to keep in mind the technical gooey parts such as ppi and aspect ratios.
