So I started a campaign where I told the players that, for the first part of the they would be exploring a wilderness area for a few game months. To help with the exploration the part was given extra gold to buy equipment. The players seemed to like the idea, with one guy going so far story wise as to name his pack animal (P. I. T. A. pain in the ass) and come up with a little back story about how, if it wasn't so obviously a horse, he'd have sworn the merchant had sold him a mule. The first session goes pretty well. The party explores several hexes of hilly forest and have a few encounters some normal stuff like wolves and herd animals. Then later that session they find some ruins and explore them for some small but cool magic treasures after fighting some low end undead. All in all a very satisfying session.
Next session the party has been traveling through modest forest for a few game days, when they come to a large clearing. As the party crossed the clear the I rolled a "catastrophic event" on my random encounter table. When the party reached the center of the large clearing, there was a massive BOOM and a large tearing sound from in front of and high above the party. With the large tearing sound, a gigantic rift in the dimensions opened. The party could see darkness beyond the rift lit by large flashes of light. Out of the rift sailed a colossal Air Whale ( a whale the swam through the air). The whale was on fire and the party could see creatures jumping from the burning whales back. Some of these creature fell to their death while others seem to float toward the ground. When the whale reached the party there was a massive explosion and tons of burning ambergris rained down on the party followed seconds later by hundreds of tons of whale.
In the distance moving toward the forest could be seen P. I. T. A. the pack horse running for its life.
