What does motivate an Inquisitor

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

Role: Inquisitors tend to move from place to place, chasing down enemies and researching emerging threats. As a result, they often travel with others, if for no other reason than to mask their presence. Inquisitors work with members of their faith whenever possible, but even such allies are not above suspicion.

I'm still not quite sure. We'll be running a Pirate Campaign and my Character is True Neutral (on both axis I mean).
Basically he's selfish, cares only about himself, doesn't think much about others people problems/suffering or about being true to the law/traditions. That's is my understanding of a Neutral character, or at least how I'll be rolling this one.

It might be possible that he turns out to be evil, NE, even my God Gozreh allows that.

My main question is why/who/what he should be chasing, smiting or whatever Inquisitors do.

Considering he's going to be Dwarf, I could easily turn him into a Gold-seeker not caring about consequences, but I was looking into more insight on the Class or your experiences.

Liberty's Edge

Well, as any worshiper of a God who receives powers you have certain obligations. In the case of an Inquisitor of Gozreh...you're probably a bit upset with pollution in general, and likely to set out to do something about it. Exploring new frontiers is also very possibly on the agenda, as is mercenary work.

Sczarni

My last Inquistor worshipped Abadar. He was a vocal advocate of city life, and had no love for rural villages, woodsmen, or the like. It was a Kingmaker campaign, and every intelligent creature we came across, he offered it a chance to relocate to the city in the same tone of voice a paladin might use to ask for surrender.

As a pirate who worships Gozreh, your primary motivation is likely to just live off the sea and its bounty, and appreciate Gozreh's gifts to this world and spread his word.

As an inquisitor and a pirate, your enemies are the people who exploit the sea-- merchant ships and freighters who treat the sea as nothing but an obstacle to be traversed. When you board a ship you're in the process of plundering, remember to ask the crew if they'd like to join the pirate's life... in the same tone of voice a paladin might use to ask for surrender. ;)

2 people marked this as a favorite.

For and inquisitor of Gozreh, I would probably think along the lines of Greenpeace or Sierra Club activists. You're going to set out to protect the @^&* out of Mother Nature. And gods help the people who try to stop you.

Well, my last Inquisitor was a LG "Paladin" of Iomedae who simply used the Inquisitor class, so he was motivated by the idea of destroying evil and bringing justice to all.

The one before that was a TN "Ranger" with no particular religious affiliation who, again, simply used the Inquisitor class instead. He was motivated by the opportunity of hunting increasingly challenging creatures, and was fiercely loyal to his friends.

Finally, the one that was most fun to play was a LG Inquisitor of Erastil, leader of a far away community, who chose a worthy successor and went on a journey to learn more about the outside world, then bring back any useful knowledge or skill that he learned back to his home town.

So... Their motivation can be whatever you want and think would best fit your character concept. Don't feel restricted by class description.

Great advice people, really interesting.

I was thinking something along the lines of greedy+loves nature, but the Greenpeace example was great haha.

I need to make the story a lil better, but I can see it, really liking it. Hope I dont die anytime soon!

Another way to go rather than 'environmental activism' might be to seek out, watch, and persecute faiths or concepts that pose an existential threat to the natural workings of the world. Namely undeath , aberrations, infiltration of Dark Tapestry monstrosities, etc. Pathfinderwiki, for example, mentions that Gozreh frequently opposes Urgathoa, Nethys, and Rovagug.

I would like to chip in with the idea that you don't have to roleplay a class. What I mean is: Don't get stuck on the name.

Just dum the flavour down and see what your character will be doing and re-build from there.

For example, a Barbarian could call him self a knight and in general not act more distinguishable from a Fighter other than the class feats. Somewhat the same with a Sorcerer, Oracle and Summoner, they could be the same as each other.

In the instance of Inquisitor you can just be a fighter with magic tricks while also being devoted to a god.

I think I would have to advice against this. It's a, somewhat, sure way to make the other players in your group think of your character as stuck-up and all around not a good or fun character to play with. And it isn't really Gozreh like.

I would say that a more approprait approach to the true neutral and Gozreh would be that he doesn't bother too much with other peoples problems. Not that he ignores them but that he won't go out of his way to ask or help. He shouldn't be self centered.

I will also 2nd Shadowdweller.

Shadow Lodge

I'd give him a low charisma and say he is just oblivious to other peoples needs and problems, not because he is self-centered, but because he has trouble seeing beyond long-term goals. Then set a long-term goal like seeking gold from your adventures, or protecting nature, or whatever suits your campaign. The Inquisitor class is fairly easy to RP without having to use the class for all of it [my current inquisitor seems less like an inquisitor and more like a selfish bard].

I would see an inquisitor of Gozreh more like Sea Shepherd than Greenpeace.

Thanks, I'm going to the neutral path, like caring about myself. I work with others because I need to, and I guess eventually Ill make friends and might start caring for them.
If you're stranger, well, you're on your own, mostly like Survival of the fittest.
