Inquiries into the Natural Sciences on Golarion

Lost Omens Campaign Setting General Discussion

Dark Archive

This thread started when I wanted to know what Carbauxine Gas is. So, here are some questions about these things.

1. What is Carbauxine Gas?

2. What is the geological composition of Golarion?
2a. Is Golarion's Core ferrus?
2b. How thick is Golarion's crust?
2c. How did it survive Earthfall?
2d. Does Golarion have tectonic activity? If not, how does volcanism work?

3. What is Golarion's size/radius/volume/mass in relation to the Earth's.

4. What is the gravitational force on Golarion?

5. How do immovable rods have a frame of reference?

I'm not looking for "Magic, you dope!" kinds of answers, I'm looking for things that make sense. Inasmuch as they can, Paizo seems to try pretty hard to simulate reality, and they've done a fairly good job despite the fantasy nature of their game. I just am curious about certain scientific principles in relation to Golarion's descriptions. Trying to make sense of things, etc.

No idea.

Similar to Earth's.

Probably? Again, Golarion is very Earth-like, and most of this stuff'll be the same as Earth.

Probably about as thick as Earth's.

A Goddess literally sacrificed her life breaking the one large meteor into a lot of smaller ones, causing the catastrophe to be much less severe. That likely helped quite a bit. Additionally, Earthfall was an engineered disaster, and one intended to not even inconvenience deep-sea life...so cracking the crust was probably not intended in the first place.

It does.

About the same.

4. What is the gravitational force on Golarion?

About the same as Earth's which makes sense, since the two are of similar size and makeup.

The answer to this one really is 'Magic.' Maybe they get it from the subconscious of their activator or some such, or maybe they just latch on to the nearest high gravity body. But we really don't know, because they really do work by magic.

1. There's a bit more info on carbauxine in the wiki (and from before this post), but it still doesn't say what it is. Based on the name, I'm guessing a carbon-based gas that comes from bauxite.

2-4. It's pretty much the same as Earth, save for those Darklands pockets designed by the Vault Builders, alone with the numerous breathable cave systems.

5. I'm guessing they're designed to lock into localized space, and/or making space itself act as a structural medium.

well its underground...
possible real world equivalents:
carbon monoxide
carbon dioxide
methane
or a combination of explosive gasses
natural gas
