[Advice] First time playing PFS at GenCon

Pathfinder Society

Grand Lodge

My brother and I will be playing our first PFS scenario at GenCon this year (5-12, Destiny of the Sands Pt 1). We both are fairly new to Pathfinder but have played in a few (non-PFS) games. We've both read the Guide to Organized play.

We were both planning on showing up with PFS-legal level 1s made in HeroLab. Any tips on what is/is not more useful in this scenario? Does it make more sense to play pregens?

Any other first-time PFS advice appreciated as well. Thanks in advance!

Someone with options other than murderhoboing it up will greatly increases your chaces of success always. In this case it increases your chances of living.

TanRu, I am glad to see you and your brother will be joining out insanity... I mean fun!

As for characters, build something you think will be fun to play. Try and give your characters a couple of things they can do, other than just killing things. Make them Pathfinders.

As for clues, you are probably not going to get any around here ;) That would be spoiling things.

Other suggestions, though... try the other two in the series with the same characters. Another idea would be to try and get into a table of #5-08 The Confirmation before you play A Bitter Bargain (mostly because it is designed for brand new characters, and is a great introduction to the Pathfinder Society).

Wait, which is it?

No, no, I definitely don't want clues or spoilers! I will shelve the half-orc barbarian for now and put together someone with a little more depth. I'm looking at the Mummy's Mask player's guide to get some more Osirion flavor into my thinking.

I also picked up the PFS Primer and PFS Field Guide today. Any other essential reading?

Thanks for the tip on The Confirmation. There's still quite a few slots left; I will try to coordinate with my brother.

Keep the info coming.

What could possibly have more depth than a half-orc barbarian? I beg to differ, sir!

Backstory wise, my Half Orc Barbarian has the deepest story :P

Seriously though, if you want to play a half orc barbarian, play it. As long as you're able to contribute in some way and you're having fun, there's no need to worry too much about it.

Hey TanRu! First off, I'd say play what you want. You don't need to shelve your half-orc if that is what you want to play.

The best advice I've seen is just to make sure your character has at least one thing to offer in combat (whether that's damage, buffs, ect.) and one thing out of combat. (usually some type of skill you have ranks in.)

One thing to keep an eye on when using HeroLab, (which I use) is to make sure you own the resources your using on your character. HeroLab is not a legal resource, so if you spent the five bucks for, say one of the Companion packages, you also need to own either a PDF or hardcopy of the resource.

Thanks again for the advice on The Confirmation. Sounds like the perfect starting point. We've traded in our tickets for Destiny of the Sands and registered for The Confirmation in the same slot. (So there are currently 2 more tickets for Destiny of the Sands for Saturday 8am).

I'm flipping through the Guide to OP, Primer, Field Guide, and Seekers of Secrets to soak up the background. Anything else I'm missing?

As far as owning the resources used in my character creation, the guide says

"a player must have a physical copy of the Additional Resource in question, a name-watermarked Paizo PDF of it, or a printout of the relevant pages from it, as well as a copy of the current version of the Additional Resources list". I understand this to mean I can bring a tablet/laptop/whatever with the watermarked PDFs loaded up; am I correct?

That would work fine. I keep everything, but the CRB on my tablet.

Inner Sea World Guide is an excellent source for learning about Golorian.

The next best place, in my opinion, is PathfinderWiki. You can find just about anything you'd want to know.

I'm running The Confirmation during that slot, maybe I'll get lucky and you'll be at my table!
