Mythic Flaws and Sins

Rise of the Runelords

I'm thinking about mythic flaws and the sins they relate to -- for possible use in the RotR game I'm currently running. Honestly I don't really like the flaws as written. But putting that aside, Furious Rage works for wrath; Hubris works for pride; some variation on dependency would work for gluttony. Anyone got ideas for other mythic flaws to fit with the other sins.

This is a (very slightly edited) version of one I used in an actual game for a while, which worked out really well. It's based on the Hubris, obviously, but has slightly different effects. (It was for a demon who had been forcibly converted to a different alignment; eventually the demon freed themselves from it, but it came into effect more than once before then).

EDIT: Also, it nearly cost a few battles... but was always appropriate when it came up. It was interesting to see someone afflicted with Lust facing off against an incarnation of Greed...

Flaw (Lustful)
The creature receives a +4 morale bonus on saving throws against [emotion] and [mind-affecting] effects, intimidate checks, and similar effects, and any such effects cannot affect him normally, but instead cause the character to become uncontrollably aroused and distracted. Whenever he succeeds at a saving throw or opposed check against one of those effects, the character is instead staggered (only able to take standard or move actions) due to strong arousal for 1d4 rounds. If the character fails his save, or is successfully hit by a critical hit, he is instead fascinated for 1d4 rounds (able to be broken as normal for fascinated condition) with her own sensations and arousal, and is distracted as described above for the normal duration of the effect that he failed a save against (up to a maximum of 2 minutes per caster level, if the effect normally lasts longer, it is reduced to that; critical hits cause the distracted condition for 1d4 rounds).

Pride: Hubris

Gluttony: Dependency
Sloth: Susceptibility to sleep or slow effects, immunity to haste effects, penalty to initiative, and/or limited land speed?
Wrath: Furious Rage
Lust: Lustful
Envy: perhaps some sort of fascination effect, or will saves v. forced attempts at Steal CMB checks or something similar? Maybe Sunder effects instead?
Greed: a requirement to have higher WBL or something similar? The Steal CMB idea from Envy? Other compulsive attempts to magically steal spells?

That's worth thinking about. Very interesting.

Glad it's worth thinking about, at least. :)

Actually, sloth may have something about fatigue or exhaustion, now that I'm thinking about it. Perhaps one of those and a penalty to initiative, as he's slow to get started, and doesn't last too long once he does.

Also, upon thinking about it more, I'd suggest the sunder (and/or dispel) effect for Envy, and leave the stealing thing to Greed. Spell stealing weapon, steal power, and transfer magic mythic power, along with the steal (and related feats?) might be something to start with. Perhaps if the item is some value over a certain amount per level (like 1/10th the WBL for a given creature? maybe after a fascination effect?). Alternatively (or perhaps additionally) perhaps something involving recalcitrance to actually expend material components on spells? (Could go a long way to explaining how the Runelord actually created Bloodmoney in the first place - he'd rather be crippled than part with his precious, precious material components.)

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I want to take the mythic rules out for a spin. My group is in Sins of the Savior now, which seems like a good place to become mythic after Chapter One, which also lets me make a few of the opponents mythic too, to really give a good challenge. I'm going to throw in a side-quest to Kaer Maga first, to have some fun.

I'm not sure what I think of the mythic flaws. I'm very against giving anyone bonuses to their saves, as this group already is pretty crunchy. So I am thinking about modifying them, since they are optional rules, and tying them to their sins and/or personalities (for those without a dominant sin).

Here's the three I have right now -- modified.

Pride: Whenever you confirm a critical hit on an attack roll, or roll a natural 20 on any other check, you gain the staggered condition for a number of rounds equal to your mythic tier, as you spend part of each round boasting about your prowess.

Wrath: Whenever an enemy scores a critical hit against you or when you fail an attempt to demoralize that enemy, you become enraged at that opponent. This limits the actions you can perform and gives you a -2 penalty to Armor Class (as the Barbarian rage ability) but without any bonuses to strength or constitution. This rage lasts until you kill the enemy, or a new enemy enrages you. At the end of the rage, you are not fatigued.

Gluttony: If you have not ingested any food and drink within one hour, you lose your ability to spend mythic power. After the first full day of absence, you can no longer regain uses of mythic power. After the second day, you lose all the powers and abilities granted by your mythic path. After the third day, you lose all of your mythic abilities, with the exception of ability score increases, bonus hit points, and bonus mythic feats. These restrictions end as soon as you eat.

... how do you retain uses of your mythic path abilities, if you lack the ability to spend mythic power? There are some abilities that do not require it, but many do. Gluttony has the potential to easily disable a mythic creature, depending on their choices, dropping them to "non mythic" in all but a few minor defensive abilities. Unless I'm missing something, which I could well be. :)

I was looking to get something less debilitating for all of them, something shorter term, and something that was only a flaw with no bonus.

Gluttony could be potentially a large flaw. But it could be mostly a flavor flaw. If I were a glutton, I would be eating and/or drinking constantly. I might even do it in combat. My off-hand might be holding a turkey leg. Unless the GM found a way to take away the food. Even if you skipped an hour, many mythic feats would still function, and they would still have the bonus hit points and ability scores for being mythic.

But, I actually don't have a player who has gluttony as a sin. So I won't be using that for a player.

That works. Mostly, I was just wondering, as I could see it seriously derailing something by accident. :)
