Does it Threaten?

Rules Questions

Simple question.

Does a Lantern Archon threaten the adjacent square (or the one below it if up in the air) with its ray attacks?

No. Because a Lantern Archon does not have a melee attack.

Under Combat - Threatened Squares: You threaten all squares into which you can make a melee attack, even when it is not your turn.

That's what I thought.

Someone said that since it can use its rays at any range without an AoO it would count and threaten.

That logic would allow a sorcerer to threaten every square on the field, along with the archer. I wish! ;)

I mean since the ray can be used at any range, it can be used at melee range without generating an AoO. So it is in effect a melee weapon.

That was the reasoning anyway.

It may be a perfectly reasonable interpretation, but it isn't the rules as written. It isn't a melee attack and the creature lacks any "use ranged attack for AoO" feats or abilities. A GM may decide the make the ruling, and I can certainly see the logic, but it isn't RAW.

This was a guy telling the GM that it worked that way.

He wasn't trying to squeak an advantage. This would have been the NPC's summoned creature getting AoO on us.
