Have you looked at the primal magic variant? Seems like it could be appropriate.

I forgot about that.

Totally awesome for this.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Nobody speaks "Common" ... but everyone speaks Druidic. It's not secret yet.

Use the Primitive Armor and Weapons from Ultimate Combat.

The Words of Power system is fluffed as a more primitive form of magic that eventually gave rise to the the more refined schools of the day. Could be interesting, but it's also a fairly complex subsystem which will take some serious study for both the GM and the players.

If this is a Golarion game:

- Curchanus is hale, hearty, and very much alive.
- Acavna, Amaznen and Lissala may be around, but may not be full deities yet.
- Desna doesn't have dominion over travel.
- Lamashtu isn't a god yet, just an up-and-coming demon lord.
- Aroden, Cayden Cailean, Iomedae, Milani and Norgorber have not even been born.
- The Starstone doesn't exist.
- The "Inner Sea" itself doesn't exist (since it's mostly an impact crater from the Starstone).
- The lands that will one day be Azlant are there.

There are a couple things I recommend considering:

-Is it a Tolkien model pre-human Dwarf and Elf Golden Age?
-Do Dwarves and Elves have armor, weapon, and magic technology that would offset some of the 'primitive' restrictions?
-Is it worth having a barter system/is a barter economy feasible? (Here is a quote by Graeber on barter economies http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/David_Graeber). Graeber wrote about the history of economic systems in Debt, the First 5000 Years. I don't recommend reading the book, but his research on early economic systems is pretty solid.

-Are there any races you would like to play a prominent role? It may be that kobolds, goblins, serpentfolk, or orcs have a golden age in parallel with the an elf and/or dwarf golden age.
-If wizard spellcasting exists, what is the sources? It could by Nethys, Asmodeus, or another god has introduced Vancian spellcasting to a group of humanoids they favor. You could even have Callistria, Cayden Cailean, or Desna introduce Vancian spellcasting on a lark.
-What monsters are prevalent? There are two parts to this question, what monsters make sense to have dominance and what monsters work best given limitations on resources.
-Are there any ACG classes that would work well? The Shaman would probably work well.

I wrote a guide to writing Native American cultures with a section on running pre-European colonialism: http://paizo.com/products/btpy94ll/discuss?Writing-Native-Americans-for-Pat hfinder-and-Other-RPGs#1. It might be worth checking out.

well like i said, riven magic does all of this immediately. There are only basic functions of spells. There are no 'fix the problem' spells like create food and water, or teleport or even fly. Its a big departure from standard magic. But its a hell of alot less work then reviewing every spell in the game.

I'm not particularly fond of 3rd party materials, but I appreciate the advice. I know reviewing the spells is going to be a lot of work, but it is going to be a lot of fun too. There have always been spells that I really didn't like (not a big fan of divination magic or "intelligent" magic.) This will allow me to really fine-tune the spell lists.

Maybe a "No casting until 4th level" rule.

I don't think that's necessary. I'm okay with level 1 spell casters, just want to get the feel right.

Once your PCs start to get to a higher levels, this constant struggle to find food and shelter will simply be a grating irritating thing, that will be no fun for anyone.

Yeah, as I mentioned earlier, as they get more powerful, the fighting to survive will gradually fall into off screen time. As a guess, I'm thinking levels 1-3 will be all survival-based. 4-6 It will only be somewhat of a concern. After that, the heroes won't have any trouble surviving the general dangers of the world.

Hmm, reminds me of 2e Wild Mages. I don't think that will really fit what I'm looking for. The Words of Power feel more on target to what I'm trying to accomplish.

Wow - I spent about three hours creating my own table by extracting the weapons I wanted from the full list in Ultimate equipment. Would have been great to know this list was broken out earlier this morning.

There's one weapon on here that I don't think works well though, which is the Taiaha. Weapons having the fragile property really helps set the theme of this campaign. The Taiaha does not have the fragile property, and even though it is exotic, it can be wielded as a martial weapon doing 1d8 with a x2 critical. I can't see why anyone would take anything other than this.

I'm hoping the characters transition from bone weapons, up to obsidian, then eventually masterwork, and then magical, or a similar transition.

No - dwarves don't exist or haven't been discovered yet. Elves will be the main race, with catfolk, varana, and vishkanya being on varying degrees of friendly terms with the elves.

Not too much. I want to the restrictions, especially at low level. As the PCs level up, the restrictions will become less and less burdensome to them.

Goblins, hobgoblins, orcs, and a few other evil humanoids will serve as the organized threat. Dinosaurs will be heavily used, both small and large as animal threats. I'll probably have lizardfolk somewhere prominently (I've always liked lizardfolk.)
